Quote: Linneas was torn between cleaning up the shop and letting it stay the way it was. It wasn't filty or anything but it didn't sparkle as it normally would after he had cleaned it up. He was trying to do things that others didn't tell him to, but it was difficult. Really difficult...
The obnoxious clicking of La's heeled shoes were the only noises that heralded her rapid, jaunty approach towards the Stationary Store. Her boss had left a memo on her desk that very morning and just as soon as she had made her way into her office she turned back to leave with her list of things to accomplish that morning. God, was it long.
A steel grey, no-nonsense business suit, and wire framed glasses gave her an older, more professional look. Pushing the glasses back up to the bridge of her nose, the woman turned the corner to close in on the shop - walking up to the door of the store and giving it a once over before she turned the handle and pushed the door open. Entering the room in her grand way, her posture was that of a queen.
The moment the door opened and Lady entered, Linneas instantly switched into his naturally helpful personality.
"Good morning, welcome to the Tall Tales Stationery store, can I help you?" he asked.
For a moment, it looked like La was going to refuse. Her lips drew into a thin line and she looked down her nose at the shorter boy, but then she gave a slight shrug and started to speak. "Yes, I need to buy some cream linen paper." Her words were brisk and straight to business as she took the moment to cast her eyes around the shop - it was.. quaint.
Normally Linneas wouldn't so much as bat an eye at Lady's tone, but ever since he went to the park with Tybalt and had that 'playdate' with Jiro, he was getting a bit more... sensitive to the way people talked to him.
His own lips pressed into a thin line, but he said nothing and scooted into the backroom where they kept the unopened goods.
As Linneas left, the Study took this as its cue to casually open itself to the woman in the business suit, knowing that Linneas was in no mood to be of service to it.
La watched as Linneas left, and rather than stand there, dumbly, in the middle of the room she started to take a self-guided tour of the small shop. Her heels clicked softly on the different textured floor, and when she came apon the door to the study, she let herself in without a second thought. After all it was just another part of the shop. Right? Besides, it wouldn't have been left open if the shop owners didn't want customers to look around.
Of course the Study wanted only certain customers to look around, not everyone had it in them to be an Author. And it absolutely deemed Lady to be an Author.
A soft, almost inaudible voice seemed to whisper into Lady's ear
Do you see me?
The source was a large, leather bound Tome, older and dustier than the room it was in. It was lying atop the writing table, waiting within the darkness.
La's eyes took a moment to adjust to the difference in the lighting between the rooms. She was turning to return to the lobby, obviously having been wrong about this being another section of the shop, when the words came to her. Did she see who?
Turning around La stepped further into the room, squinting a little to be able to make out the things in study. There was silence and she didn't reply, of course no one had spoken to her. Who would be there? Although, it kept her in the room, and she approached the writing table to look down at the leather tome, a hand reaching out to run lightly along the edges.
A few random bulbs persisted in flickering on and off, adding a more eerie atmosphere to the Study. Perhaps it was the lighting, or rather lack of it, as most of the antique-looking fixtures seemed to have burned out ages ago, but the Tome appeared to hiss at Lady's touch.
To protect itself, so to speak, it opened to a worn blank page with one question printed on it.
"What lies at the heart of the forest?"
La couldn't help looking up thoughtfully as she watched the bulbs flicker, but she didn't stray - she was the kind of person who laughed through horror movies. Looking down when she heard the rustling that made her aware that the tome was moving under her finger tips, she snatched her fingers back and watched the tome open in a precise fashion. The words printed on the page seemed to startle her for a moment, enough that she found herself repeating them out loud.
"What lies at the heart of the forest?" A small shudder rippled over her form and she couldn't help herself, a small, disgusted whisper made its way out of her lungs as she groped for a pen of sorts to write her answer in the book. Oblivious to why she was doing these things.
"Poisons and festering rot."
The moment Lady finished writing her answer, the ink began to fizzle and turn into a noxious green. It spread throughout the page, and began to eat away at the Tome, gradually moving onto the Writing Table. The toxic liquid devoured the walls, the floors, the lights, but it left the woman in the business suit untouched. As everything dissolved into nothingness, a single, solitary golden orb seemed to shine in the midst of the darkness.
It would draw her closer, it would pull at her to approach, and once she was near enough, she would see that the orb was encased within a sickly pale face. Then the lights flickered back on, and the Study returned to normal. Or had it?
The Tome was no longer on the Writing Table. Instead, an infant glared up at her, his expression and demeanour as acidic as the ink had been.

La was intranced by the fizzling of the ink for a moment, before the pen dropped from her hand when the sickly looking green consumed everything around her.. but, strangely enough left her standing there. It was a hard pressed moment to keep her calm, and she almost lost the battle with her fear to go running for the door. At that moment, though a golden orb reached out to her and she took a step forward towards it. Closer, and closer, she moved until it became apparent that there was more to the orb than itself. There was a face.
Wait. A face?
She seemed stunned into silence, and then everything reverted back to normal. Except, for the small detail of the little boy sitting on the table infront of her glaring daggers at her. This really ranked up in her Twilight Zone experiences. What was she going to do with the boy - Nothing it seemed for neither of them talked, just stared at each other with equal distaste.
La didn't want a child. What was she supposed to do with this one?
Udell didn't like the woman right off the bat. He could use her though.
They stared.
It was a whirlwind from that point on, La barely understood what was happening before she had the package of stationary in her hand and had paid for it. Udell watching silently as it happened. Looking down at the boy at her side, La rubbed her forhead, great. Now what? She needed to go back to work.
"Come on." La muttered, bending down to snag the boy's hand, and start walking, albeit a litle slower so his small legs could keep up.
Udell's nose wrinkled at the contact, but he walked with the woman. Walking was much better than the indignity of being dragged along, which was what would likely happen if he didn't start moving.
And, out the door they went.

Pales stopped at the door of the shelter giving a small sigh. Such places usually made him sad but he liked to see if he could volunteer in any way. His hand dropped to the knob and he pushed open the door and sort of glanced around a bit. The racket going on was not unusual for a shelter, though this place was slightly more muffled when you first came in. The animals were generally kept in a seperate area than where the welcome area was. The young man adjusted his coat standing his full six foot height and squared his shoulders. He wouldn't sqawk or run away from the person behind the desk. He'd talk to them and get information. He won't blush or try to hide his face. Nope. At least that was the plan..
Tia looked up, and away from the Celtic cross tarot spread infront of her, at the joyful sound of the overhead bells ringing when the door brushed past them as it opened. Her retro-style, pink side pony-tail bobbed in the air as she pushed her pink shades up her nose to sit on the top of her head so she would be able to see in proper colour instead of her rose tinted world that she was quite accustomed to. "Hello!" Her childish voice rang above the din. A small glimmer behind her would be seen as the light streaming through the door reflected off the glitter and gauze wings sewn to the back of her sleeveless top, a faint sunburn glowing pink on the bridge of her nose - spreading out to her cheeks - and on her shoulders.
He blinked, momentarily distracted by the nice sparkly wings, "...Oh! Hi..Uhh...I was coming...In to see about volunteering.." He looked the girl over but nothing about his face reacted oddly to it. He just tilted his head and then he fidgeted a little, "I wasn't interrupting anything was I?" Pales he wiped off the palm of his hands on his pants. He had seem so cool and collected before approaching the desk, though now he felt like he was going to have a fit of some sort in a short moment or two.
"Great!" There was an obviously bubbly enthusiam about her, and she waved a hand absently in response to his second question - snagging one of the tarot cards not being used in the spread and holding it up to him. "Reading a spread, can't seem to put the meanings together though." A slightly saddened look passed over her features before it got blasted away by a ten-volt smile. "But, 'nough of that. Come with me, I'll show you around, get you some forms to fill out, and then we'll see what we can get you started on. Maggie, she runs the Shelter, is away on holidays with her neice so I'm in charge for now." Putting the card down, Tia made her way around the desk, holding out a hand to him. "I'm Tia Amlin.. most people here call me Tinkerbelle though."
He seemed almost blasted away by her enthusiasm but he made a boyish smile hiding his shyness and nervousness as best as he could. He watched her come around and hold her hand out to him, he put his hand in hers and gave her a good handshake. Most men would try to flirt with women even on the handshake, but he didn't seem the type, he treated her as equal. "I'm Pales D'Arcy." He introduced himself, "Ummm I don't have any nicknames." He chuckled nervously. "Good to meet you." He was going to comment on the cards but he felt like the conversation wasn't ready for that just yet. He would bring it up soon though, maybe he could help.
"Wonderful to meet you!" Clapping her hands as she looked around the small room, her attention seemed torn between two doors, from the large stickers plastered over each one it was easy to tell one led to the room where the cats and kittens were kept; the other - the dogs. There was an intirely different room for the rodents, rabbits and the like, but they'd get to that last. "What would you like to see first, Pales?" She always liked to use new peoples names a few times during the first meeting to make sure she remembered them.
He blinked and pondered that for a moment, tucking his hands behind his back after releasing the girl's hands as she released his to clap. "Uhhh...Cats." He nodded. He liked all animals, but he liked cats the best it seemed, "If that would be okay that is?" He added shyly, his left foot shuffling slightly before straightened his posture so he can follow the enthused girl to the room he chose. He didn't want seem bossy, that would be bad.
"Mmhmm. I prefer cats myself, they're cute and fuxxy. Especially the kittens." She seemed to ramble slightly before giggling and tapping the fingers of her left hand to her forhead. "Right, lets go!" Turning on heel and walking towards the door that was chosen, Tia's flip flop sandles would announce her movements to the caged animals inside the room who started to mewl disdainfully at their captivity. Given a view from behind her, the obvious stitching along the back of her shirt would clear any thoughts about the wings being her own, and amusingly enough, stuck through the back of her belt would be a childs faerie wand, full with sequined start sitting on top and drifting strips of ribbon in a rainbow of pastel colours. Twisting the doorknob, Tia opened the door and stepped into the room ahead of him.
He followed after blinking a bit, he wasn't checking her out persay, but he had noticed the back ... He chose to say nothing about it and dared to not say it was a nice costume or even that it was a costume at all. He decided to humor her, "Yeah kittens are sweet." He nodded softly responding to her rambling, "So you are a faerie, huh?" He said making a friendly conversation with her. His voice didn't hold any sort of sarcasm when he asked this. It seemed appropriately enough, though if she turned around and pounced on him he might get a little worried. He looked around the room where the cats were kept and felt his heart ache slightly, he suddenly wanted to take all of them home.
Tia looked over her shoulder at him, a sheepish smile on her face, "The wings aren't mine.. but, I could be." The smile grew into a broad grin as she turned to face the large cages - Tia had spent a good portion of La's inheritance making sure the cages and facilities of the shelter were suitable and up to her standards. Opening one of the cages, the tag hung on the bars read 'Mel', she removed a kitten who didn't look much older than a year. "This one's mine... but, I can't bring him home since my girlfriend is allergic to animal dander." She paused for a moment to press a kiss to the cat's head as she cuddled him, "Everyone who works here adopts a pet, whether or not they can take them home. You're free to do the same, but we've a rule.. if you do choose to adopt one, you can't give it any more affection than you give the others. They'll get jealous." She snuggled Mel against before lifting him gently back into his cage, standing on tippy toes to reach the bag of cat food so she could fill the dishes around the room. "Could you let the others out?"
He smiled lightly and nodded, "Indeed," he seemed to be warming up to the girl. "Let them all out?" He made sure the door was closed first, it wouldn't do to have them all run wild all over the place. "Girlfriend huh? Sorry to hear she's allergic." He asked as he started to do as asked, he figured she could help him keep them under control if anything broke out like a cat fight, "I reat tarot cards myself, a bit of a hobby." He nodded softly as he scritched a kitten behind the ear as he took it from the cage, it clampered up to his shoulder and promptly began to stick it's nose into his ear and starts sniffling, ""ey! That tickles." He laughed a bit, gingerly taking the kitten off of his shoulder to look at it eye to eye.
"Yes, please. It's feeding time." She got to her knees on the floor and rummaged around in a box for the large, but shallow, plastic bowls. Setting them out, Tia was amused to find most of the 'freed' cats and kittens swarming around her, they'd been around long enough to know that it was meal time. "I'm sorry about it too, but she takes pills so she doesn't become allergic to me." A soft giggle passed her lips as she started to pour the food into the dishes, "Mmm, you do - do you? How long have you done it for?"
He took the kitten into his arms and petted it a little and set it down, though it seemed intent on following him as he finished his task, "Since I was sixteen or so, I am twenty-three now." He shrugged, "They intrigued me," he smiled slightly, "so it seemed okay to pick up a deck and start reading y'know?" The kitten determinedly pounced on his boot and peered up at him and gave a firm mewl. "Oh my." He laughed a bit and stared down at the small one, "I think I have a fan."
"I only started recently.. I'm not very good -" She seemed like she was going to continue before she was caught by his words to describe the kitten's actions. "That's Holly. We named them all, but, it's really easy sometimes to get confused on whos who." Rubbing her nose with the back of her hand as she wrinkled it, she stood back up to put the bag of food back up on the shelf. "We leave them alone while they eat, so lets scoot and go see the D-O-G-S."
He chuckled and nods and set Holly to where she could see her food bowl and start to eat, "Alright, time to see those guys." He abstained from saying dogs figuring there was a reason why she spelt it out. He acknowledged that cats are smarter than what he let on, "Well maybe I can help you improve on your readings?" He offered, "I got help at first too," he nodded a bit, "no harm in it." Pales smiled, he seemed a lot less shy around her now. Stepping carefully so not to squash any little limbs or tails if the cats moved, "Be good." She informed them in her best 'La voice', trying to sound stern. Opening the door, she headed out of the room and to the other door, making sure that Pales was out and had the door closed before she opened the door to the dog's room. "Mmm.. Sure!" She opted to answer after a moment, "Sounds like we're going to be spending a lot more time around each other now, neh? Although, when I work my normal hours I work morning shift so I can spend time with La when she gets off work."
Pales gingerly stepped out after her and let her close the door, "I can understand that." He nodded slightly to her comment about her girlfriend, "Gotta spend time with your loved ones." He smiled lightly, "Though I don't mind coming in early or whatever." He waited to be let into the dog room. "Are the dogs nice?" He asked almost uneasy, Pales had a few close encounters with doggie teeth, he'd rather not repeat that yet again here.
"Most of them, although, we don't have as many dogs as we have cats. So, they're easier to deal with when you're alone. We only have five right now, but we have one who was obviously abused as a pup - vicious thing he is.. but, I can't for the life of me bring myself to fill out the form to have him put down." There was a sniffle, and a quiet sigh as she led the way into the depths of the room, it was quite a large room, with small gates in the walls that the dogs could use to leave their built in kennels and go out on the runs in the back. "Three of the five dogs we have currently are puppies, so.. they shouldn't give you any trouble. Kibie is a huskey, and she's well.. quite used to affection and getting her way. An over sized lap dog."
He nodded sympathetically when she talked about one of them. Mean or not it was hard to put down an obviously abused animal that already had a bad life to start with, "No animal deserves to be abused." He added to her commentary and chuckled when she talked about the huskey, "Sounds like a lot of the big dogs I ever met." He smiled, "I not exactly scared of dogs, if you are wondering why you asked. I just rather keep my hand rather than unwittingly pet one that would bite it off." he was glad that there weren't that many dogs.
"Ahh, then stay away from the Rottie - he's the one that bites." She moved to lean against the wall across from the dog kennels, the three pups shared one of the rather large kennels, a four by eight foot corner kennel, while the other two dogs had their seperate kennels, which weren't really much smaller. "Like the cats, the dogs are on a regulated feeding schedule, but they eat four times a day while the cats eat three. Alan takes care of them.. he's probably out back setting up a tub to give Kebie and the pups a bath."
He nodded slightly, "Got ya." He put his hands into his pockets, "The pups are cute." He said while looking them over. For him the dog smell wasn't all that pleasant, but he seemed to manage without gagging or anything, "You also take in rodent-types? Wow. I mean I know some shelters do that, but none did where I lived." He nodded slightly, "It seemed a real shame. I had a hard time trying to help a friend to relocate his guinea pig."
"Oh! Yes, we do, I was going to show you that last since while you're looking I can pull up the proper forms for you to fill out. Would you like to go do that now?" Tia didn't seem to notice the smell, since this was her place of work and she was around it daily. Without giving him a chance to respond, she headed back towards the door from whence they came and behind her desk. Pointing to the door when he emerged from the dog room, she smiled. "In there. Fell free to have a look. I'll get you the forms now."
Pales nodded to the woman and went to look over the rodents. A lot of them were curious about him, as they ran to the bars and did a bit of sniffling in the air, though a lot of them remained backed up in their corners staring at him as if he were going to turn around and devour them whole. Pales would sometimes bend to see a little clearer what was kept in a few of the darker cages, he was waiting paitiently to be summed back for the paper work. That was always the boring part he figured. He was glad he met Tia though, she seemed pretty nice. He started to wonder what the girlfriend was like, was she exactly like that? As cute as that would be he highly doubted it. He clicked his tongue against the roof of his mouth and then went silent.
Tia spent her time sifting through a small metal file folder, Maggie wasn't exactly the best record keeper so it was taking her much longer than usual to find the forms. "Where did you put them, Mags?" She asked cheerfully, although Maggie wasn't around to answer. She peeked through a few more folders before a triumphant, "A-HAH!" Was heard throughout the office. Closing the filing cabinet door, she bounced over to the door to the rodent room, flip flops slapping as she made her way over. "I got the forms."
He looked over to her as she made the announcement and appeared at the door. Pales broke into a smile and nodded,"Excellent." He said and made his way over to take the paperwork so that he may look them over, "I have everything with me so none of this should be much problem, I can fill it all in here." He smiled, "I doubt that would be any problem?" Pales seemed to be almost as cheerful as the girl, the enthusiasm must have caught on, that or he felt a lot more comfortable.
"Not a problem. You can have a seat at my desk and fill out the forms while I get the kittens back in their cages and clean up after them." She moved over to her desk, straightening up a few piles of paper before picking up the tarot cards and putting them back in their case. A simple Rider deck for a beginner. Pulling out the chair for him she turned towards the door to the cat room, "If you have a question on anything - don't be afraid to ask."
He nodded to her and smiled thankfully, allowing her to get on with her duties as he took the papers to the desk and sat in the chair. It took a few moments to sit to where he wanted to, he tried not to get distracted by anything on the desk. A compuslive need to explore and look at everything seemed to be his downfall on most days, but today he seemed to have it in check. He went on down the sheet filling in answers that he knew off hand before he dug into his pockets for various IDs and other certificates that he had copied off. He was soon finished and leaning back in the chair ever so slightly.
Putting the cats in their cages wasn't as hard as it would have seemed, since all the cats got pretty good and lazy after they've had their dinner - the hardest part was remembering which cage belonged to white cat. Sweeping up came next, and then making sure the bowls were empty before putting them away to be cleaned later. "Good night, kittens." She murmured to the cats as she headed for the door to go back to the lobby, shutting off the bright overhead lights and turning on the dimmer lights of the wall mounted corner lamps. When she came out she grinned, "All the babes are put to bed, how're the forms going?"
He nodded to her and started to get up and stretched, "All done." He replied cheerfully, "I think I got them all right. I made doubly sure." He nodded as he moved from behind the desk area with a tilt of his head, "I am glad I decided to do this." He added, "I was almost afraid to." He laughed a little with a small shrug. Indeed, he was afraid a stern woman would be sitting behind the desk with a ruler at the ready to slap his hand with for even saying anything out of line.
Taking the papers from the desk, Tia's eyes glittered as she laughed. "We don't bite, although some of our charges might." Picking up a stapler, she attatched the papers together before filing them in the cluttered filing cabinet. "I can't have you starting today, because, well.. I'm the one who's going to be training you.. unless you want to work the majority of your time with the dogs and then you'll be working with Alan.. And, my shift ends in fifteen minutes." She thought about it for a moment, "But, if you want to come by tomorrow I can show you the ropes."
He thought about it for a moment, "Alright." Pales gave a short nod, "I can come tomorrow just as easily. Just let me know what time and stuff. Is there anything I ought to bring with me?" He blinked a bit, it seemed like a good enough question to him, though he felt silly while asking it, "I mean I can get my own equipment if I need any." Pales smiled slightly putting his hands into his pockets.
Tia shook her head, "This is pretty much a come as you are type thing. As long as you don't wear things that you won't mind getting dirty you should be fine. As for time, I normally show up around seven thirty to eight o'clock. It depends on if La is dropping me off or if I'm catching the city bus. Although, the shelter doesn't officially open until eight." There was a certain ability Tia seemed to have; she could be obsolutely serious, and be talking in her normal fashion, but she still seemed to be bouncing off the walls.
He nodded a bit, "Come as you are and then are you suggesting that I come at eight? That'd be great as then I can drop off my little ones at their respective schools." He said faintly as if it was an everyday thing, "As long as that wouldn't be a problem that is." He nodded a bit, "I can come earlier and have a friend drop them off. However, you think it is best for me to come in, it is no problem." Pales seemed pretty well at ease for the moment.
Tia laughed softly, "Nonono. It's important you do those little things for your kids before they grow up and don't want you to do them anymore. Come when you're done that, this is volunteer remember? I'm not going to dock you pay if you're late... although Holly might be miffled if you aren't around to play with her first thing in the mornings." She giggled and bent down to pick up a bright pink over-the-shoulder purse from underneath her desk, slinging it over her shoulder. "I'm heading out. If you want to continue to look around - please do, I've just got to head out back and tell Alan he has to take over desk duty. He should be done with the dogs by now."
Pales laughed a bit and nodded, "Agreed, thank you. I am sure Holly'll understand sooner or later." He smiled and let her wander off to do what she needed to do, he took a few moments to poke around the room before he headed for the door checking to see what time it was as well, "Hmm. Lee won't be out for another hour." He muttered as he got out and stood around outside, peering around, how was he going to kill another hour?
It was a short run to the back of the building to inform Alan that she was off, and it was barely five minutes later when she emerged out from the building - pulling her pink shades down over her eyes as she met the sun outside. Stretching out, she shook her shoulders which caused her wings to flutter. "Hanging around?" She asked Pales cheerfully when she noticed he was still present, and had only moved outside.
He chuckled, "I have an hour or so more before I need to pick up one of my kids. The other one is spending the night else where. So I have some time to kill before I need to do anything else." He blushed slightly and smirked, "I do not exactly have a full social calander." It wasn't that he wasn't popular but he was so damned shy, it took a lot for him to come up to someone and make friends right off the bat. There were a few exceptions to that rule.
Tia thought for a moment, and then nodded. "Come on, we'll go back to my place for some tea and you can work a card reading for me while I wait for La to get home from work.. Although, you'll probably have to go pick up your child before La gets home."
He shrugged then nodded, "Sure." He said cheerfully. "I'd do anything for a cup of tea." He laughed quietly and shrugged, "What kind you have?" He waited for her to lead the way. He figured he could find his way from anywhere no matter where it was.
"Mmm.. Apple spice, Cinnamon, Green, and Mint.. herbal stuff. Very relaxing with a bubble bath." Looking both ways much like a child would, Tia crossed the street with a slight bounce to her step, walking the streets of Durem with calm and ease. It didn't take long for the main parts of town to replace the more sceneic view of the outskirts, and for a fair sized building with the appearance of a victorian-manor to come into view.
He nods a bit, "My favorites are green or mint." He replied in a offhand manner as he followed along with her, kind of looking both ways but more of a glance of habit more than anything. He didn't like the idea of becoming windshield decoration anymore than he liked the idea of being bitten by a dog.
"I like mint chamomile tea myself, but we've none left, and I haven't went shopping yet." She laughed softly, "I really have to go shopping soon." She said, almost to herself, like she was trying to remind herself of that fact. She eyed the victorian-manor some blocks down the road from them, shaking her head. "La's house is big." She informed Pales, as they rapidly approached the building that held her gaze.
He looked at the building and tilted his head, it almost seemed to make his house seem like a simple bumpkin's hut but he said nothing of his home but instead gave a compliment, "It is very lovely though." He had always enjoyed victorian style. "Most houses like that are big at least on the inside. Unless you mean a different sort of big?"
Tia shook her head, "No, just big as in size." She informed him, "Sometimes it seems too big, since it really is only La, her mother, her mother's nurse, and I living there." Drawing up to the large french style doors that made up the entrance way, she took out a key and unlocked the door, turning the doorknob and letting herself inside, "Come on, we can sit in the 'servants' kitchen. I like it so much better than the formale dining area."
He followed politely after nodding a bit, "Hope they don't mind then." Pales gave a small but nervous chuckle. He'd likely be gone before anyone noticed, unless something happened to keep him here. He wasn't counting on being kept here for much later anyways. Though if need be he could get a message to Lee if he would be late or unable to pick her up. "I always liked sitting in the kitchen area anyhow. Not sure why." He smiled a bit.
Tia led the way through the empty house, "No, they won't mind, La is at work as I said, and her mother and her nurse barely ever come down stairs." Entering the kitchen Tia headed towards a small set of cupboards to get a tea kettle to boil some water. "Have a seat." She invited him cheerfully as she pulled out some mugs and the tea bags, "I like the table in here, it's so cute." The 'cute' table was a small wooden table, with no frills or designs on it, with three chairs around the edges.
He had a seat as instructed he looked the table over, it surely looked stable, but he dared not lean on it. It was bad manners to lean any part of one's body on the table. "Yeah. I remember." Pales nodded as he responded to her commentary as to everyone's where abouts. "Nice place though." He said again. He felt as if he was was repeating himself or at least his sentiments thus making them false.
Tia leaned back against the counter, waiting for the water to boil, "Yeah, I guess it is, it has been in La's family as long as she can remember. So, it must be pretty old too.." She shrugged, "Oh! Right! Would you like to see my deck?" She asked, digging through her side back for her tarot deck, before moving over to the table to sit down and hand them to Pales.
"Yeah sure." He accepted them and looked them over with faint curiosity, "Ahh. I started out with these too." He smiled a bit. "Nice starter deck." He spread them out a bit, "What was it you were having problems with again?" He looked up at her as he pushed them back together and offered them to her again, "Making sense of them?"
Tia nodded, "Yes, I'm finding it hard to understand how to read them." Tia took her cards back and shuffled them quietly, almost jumping as the whistle of the kettle rang thoughout the kitchen. Getting up from her chair, Tia moved over to the counter, putting a tea bag in each of the mugs and filling them with the boiling water. "Do you take milk or honey in your tea?" She asked as she brought the mugs back over, settling one infront of him. "It's mint tea." She informed him.
He nodded and watched as she jumped, the whistle caused him to jolt a little as well, "Gah. Yes. Umm.. Honey please." He offered a slight chuckle, "We make for a jumpy pair." Pales shook his head and ran his hand through his hair a bit uneasily.
"Yeah, I guess we do." She told him with a laugh as she went to dig though a cupboard of spices, digging around for the honey - her wings waving with her movements. Pulling out of the cupboard with a triumphant grin, she came over and handed him the honey as she settled back down into her seat, taking a sip of her tea.
He took the honey and quietly pulled his mug closer to him. Pales put as much honey as he liked in it which wasn't all too much, never quite favoring anything overly sweetened or honeyed. "Cards are hard to read for yourself or others really..Unless you have a good grasp for the situation that is being asked about...Sometimes it helps knowing the question before you go about giving an answer.."
Tia laughed softly, "It's hard to answer questions without knowing the question to be answered Pales. I've never tried it without knowing what I was trying to draw from the cards, but knowing how to interpret the cards is my problem. There are so many different ways that each one could be taken."
He shrugs chuckling as he took a sip of his tea, "Interpreting is a tricky thing. Though it goes back to how involved with the situation you are. Sometimes it is a simple matter of taking a word from the reading and applying it to the situation." He shrugged, "It is hard. I barely read from the book they give you anymore...I always throw in my own two cents some way or another."
"The book is my best friend right now, but I haven't tried to give anyone other than La readings, I'm not good enough yet. But, La doesn't really believe that the cards can give any sort of answers.. so.." She shrugged and took a sip of her tea.
He shrugged, "I never lived by the cards either way. They can either lie or there is much you can change because people have free will no matter how you turn it." He smiled a little, "Though sometimes it is a blessing to those with uneasy minds about any given topic."
Tia nodded, swirling her tea around tihe the tip of her finger before taking another sip, silent for a moment as her train of thought got de-railed.
He peered into his own tea cup for a moment before glancing up at her, "Have any favorite hobbies?" He was apparently trying to keep the situation from going into an awkward silence of any sort. He didn't want to be rude and glance at his watch either.
Tia blinked, "Oh, sorry. Yes, the shelter is one of them actually, I read a lot, but for the most part I like being outside. Gaia is so odd. What about you?"
He nodded, "I like walking, reading, I write sometimes." He chuckles, "I paint though I make mess more than get anything actually on a canvas, though I hear that is quite popular. Modern art they call it."
Tia nodded, "I used to like fingerpainting a lot." She commented with a soft giggle, "I still do I guess." Drinking some more of her tea, she thought for a moment, "So what time does your child get off school?"
He seemed to think for a moment, "Thirty minutes now." He nodded, "Suppose I ought to scoot after the tea so I can be there on time." He took another drink of his tea, it was half full or was that half empty?
Tia nodded, and then blinked, "Oh! Sorry! Don't think I'm trying to rush you off or anything." She wasn't really, just trying to make sure he wasn't late because of her. She hated to be late, and thus expected that others did as well.
He shook his head a small smile upon his lips, "Don't worry about it Tia. I do not feel rushed at all." He nodded a little, "Besides we'll see eachother again sometime. I am sure." He said cheerfully, to show he wasn't offended at all.
"Yes, yes, I'm sure we will. Probably tomorrow morning at the shelter." She informed him with a soft laugh.
He nodded, "See? Not that long after all." He laughed in reply. "Can't help but be optimistic I guess."
"Indeed." Tia took a sip of her tea, breathing in the minty smell with a soft sigh. "So, what do you think of the shelther?"
He nodded a bit and chuckled, "It is a very nice place. Clean and orderly. It'll be fun helping there. I hope."
"Well, there are never really any rushed times, well, after the holidays there are. Most people buy pets for their children for gifts and then realize they can't handle them and bring them to us." Tia rubbed her forhead, for the first time that day she looked burnt out, like the mere idea of people abandoning their pets so freely just vapped all her energy.
He shook his head lightly, "Horrible. Simply horrible." He said with a sympathetic tone, "I mean honestly, what do the poor animals do to them to deserve such treatment? T's horrible indeed." He nodded and took another drink from his cup his expression looking faintly stormy but still cheerful.
Tia nodded and took another sip of her tea, rubbing the back of her neck, "It's hard to work around those times, but those are the times that we have all our volunteers in, normally it takes Maggie, Alan, Elizabeth, and I to be able to handle the new pets coming in and all the other duties we have to take care of every day."
He chuckles a bit, "Sometimes I wonder if perspective pet owners ought to take a test of some sort before being allowed to buy or adopt. Along with an oath of 'I will not abandon this pet at any time lest someone bricks me in my home.' Yeah. That's the ticket." He chuckled a little as he drained down another sip from his tea. He swirled the left overs a bit contemplatively.
"Well, we have them fill out forms, although none are quite like you put it. But, we've never had any pets who've been picked up from the shelter returned. Normally it is those that Gaians buy from the pet shops." She shook her head before finishing her tea.
He nods a little and shrugs, "That is a good thing. Though they shouldn't be abandoned in the first place. People that do that need a good kick in the pants." He finally drained the last of his tea out and smiled, "That was lovely tea, Tia."
"I agree, and thank you for the compliment." She tugged her hair out of the pony tail, before picking up their mugs and taking them to the sink to fill them with water and throw out the tea bags.
He stretched as he stood up from his seat, "I ought make my way out then, so I can get to Lee when school is out. She was so nervous about starting a new school...Now she has so many friends." He chuckled a bit.
"Mm, yes. I can remember my first day of school - absolutely terrifying. Come on, let me show you to the door then." Padding back to through the house, Tia wiped her hands on her baggy pants.
He nodded, "I can relate to that as well. She is a very smart young girl, though it is sometimes hard for her to focus." He followed her through the house again. Knowing him it was completely possible that he'd get lost, "It was lovely speaking to you." He said when they got to the door.
"Likewise, I'll see you tomorrow, bring anything that you think you may need. Although, I doubt there is going to be much you'll need." Opening the door, Tia smiled brightly, "It was really nice to meet you today, Pales."
He stepped out and bowed a bit, "See you tomorrow, and I'll try to remember everything. Well at least not to wear overly nice clothes." He laughed a little giving a small wave he then turned upon his heels and made his way down the steps and started to make his way to the school.
Tia waved as Pales left, grinning at the idea of wearing fancy clothes to the shelter. "Good plan!" She quietly shut the door behind him and sighed, looking about the manson, trying to figure out what she could do for another hour before La returned home.

When La finally returned to her office she shut the door and drew the blinds. It was then that Udell snatched his hand back from the La's talon like grip, a defiant look set on his face as he narrowed his eyes at her. Or, she'd have to assume he narrowed his eyes, only being able to see one.
"Who are you." La demanded after a moment, having no clue what was a proper way to deal with children and not knowing where the heck this one came from.
Udell blinked lazily at her and just stared, seemingly content not to speak to her, whether he was mute, being spiteful, or simply couldn't speak english was anybody's guess. He just stared at her for a moment more before moving behind her desk to prop himself up in La's cushy leather chair.
La's mouth moved but no words came out, a dark fury quickly becoming apparent on her features as she watched the brat take over her office. Stomping over to her chair she reached over to snag the child by the back of his collar and lift him out of her chair to settle him on the ground. Not the best mothering techiniques, but she wasn't exactly willing to become Gaia's best mom.
A hiss escaped the throat of the child when La yanked him so roughly out of her chair, kicking at the woman who dared to try and move him from the territory that he claimed. Turning to her with a death glare - his initial assumption of her was starting to change, he might actually be able to like this one.
Crossing her arms over her chest as she stared at the boy for a second more before stomping to her chair and siting down with more grace than maturity. After straightening a few papers, she grabbed a couple of pencils and some sheets of paper which she thrust out in Udell's direction, not caring if he actually took them or not, before starting in on her day's work.
Accepting the papers and writing tools with a readiness that would have made La waver if she wasn't engrossed in her work, Udell trucked himself off to one of the corners to begin his work. Arriving there, he promply began to gouge the moss and tan painted jiprock with the pointed end of the pencil, whether in exploration or otherwise it was questionable - but, La just let him be.. it wasn't worth it not to.
As the clock ticked and tocked, and Udell continued his rampage of destruction unhindered, La tapped her pen against a page settled in front of her. Scribbling down numbers of scratching out sentences and re-writing them every so often. Finally the clock in her office rang out once in a clear gong-like noise and she got up from her desk, shifting some papers from her desk into the open briefcase resting beside her chair.
Udell looked up as the gong sounded, intrigued for a moment about La reacted, staring at her as if to memorize the flow of events.
Pulling her blazer back over her shoulders, La hefted her briefcase and walked over to Udell - holding out her hand to him when she was close enough. "Come on, time to go home." There was an impatient sigh to follow.
Reaching out to grip her hand, Udell dropped the pencils on the once spotless floor - now covered with a fine white dust, residue from his destruction. There was a moment in which he didn't move, just eyed La as if he was speculating something, and she waited for him. " Home?" He asked in his soft as silk voice, a hint of something unreadable coming across.
A ripple of confusion showed for a moment as La looked at the boy, he spoke? So he knew how.. or atleast.. could put together words. Sidestepping her ignorance, La nodded. "Home."
A smug look passed over his features as Udell allowed La to lead him off, out of the building after she locked her office door. The city was a new thing for him, and he openly examened everything that he could; whether it was the taste of the air, or the feet of dirt, or the sun overhead. The first and last he didn't enjoy so much, but his utter fasination was held not by something around him but, by the lack of something. He couldn't place what it was, but.. something was missing.
La exhaled a pent-up breath as they drew closer to the manor house, someone there would have a good idea of the hows and whys of raising a child.. although, the only 'why' answers she'd get from that bunch would probably be a remark about Tia and why didn't she tell them that she was adopting. Riiight, like she meant for this to happen.
When the manor house finally loomed in front of them, La nodded. "This is home." She informed Udell, before heading to and opening the large french doors to allow them enterance.
