Covet's mind was buzzing. Her opening week had gone much smoother than she had anticipated and she was finding Martiya to be very enjoyable. She loved her customers and she loved her shop. It gave her something that she had not realized she had been missing while working in Taliesin.
Waving her final customers out the door with a warm good bye, she shut the door behind them and turned around to let out a deep breath. Humming softly to herself, she made her way around the tables, blowing out candles and picking up a few random dishes. Turning to the kitchen, she went to start cleaning up and getting everything ready for the next day. It wasn't until she put the final glass on the shelf that the black and red shu was remembered.
It was odd. He had an aura of danger around him and she knew she couldn't trust him. But then... those weren't exactly qualities she shied away from in another shu. He had been rather charming and his words had set her mind to thinking about things that had never been an issue before. She had known that Mecca could not give her love, that it was something he both detested and could not understand. But maybe Yaku was right. Maybe Mecca did just keep her around because she could feel and do things he couldn't. That thought made her pause for a moment.
Meepo crawled out of his little space in the kitchen and gave a big yawn and curious chirp, wondering if they would be returning home soon. Covet bent down and lifted him to her shoulder where he began nuzzling her cheek. She walked back out to the shop and lifted a guitar from the wall. She needed to think, and she had just the song that would help her. Playing softly, she looked out over the shop, only a couple of candles providing a soft, flickering glow, the light catching the gold threads in some of the fabrics that lined the walls.
Here she was questioning Mecca's motives and she suddenly realized that she hadn't even thought of hers. Yaku assumed that they loved each other. Was that true? Did she love Mecca? What was it exactly that bound her so tightly to him?

Mecca sat infront of the fire in the drawing room. Scim curled up ar his feet, sleeping in the warm orange light. Mecca had been reading, his feet resting on the coffee table. Now, his book lay where it had fallen on his lap and his head drooped forwards as he joined Scimitar in slumber.
He should have gone to bed, but he had wanted to be up when Covet returned. She was late tonight, but not late enough for him to worry. She was probably talking to one of her customers or employees.

Covet slipped silently into the house and was surprised to see a fire's glow coming from the drawing room. Setting Meepo down she sent him off to bed and made her way into the warm room. She tilted her head to the side and watched Mecca for a moment. He was quite peaceful when he was asleep. Almost adorable, she thought with a small smirk. Motioning to Scim to be quiet when he lifted his head from the floor, she made her way to his side and ran a hand over his soft blood red hair.
"Shouldn't you be in bed?" she asked him.

Mecca's eyes flew open at the touch and he looked up at her, smiling. "I was waiting for you." He said flatly dropping his hand over the arm of the chair to scratch Scim on the head. "I did not notice I had dropped off. Why so late?"

Covet slipped into his lap and reached up with one hand to play with his hair. She gave him a small smile and shrug. "I got distracted playing with one of my instruments once I was finished putting everything in order," she replied and studied him in the firelight for a moment.
"I had a visitor today. Yaku, that black and red shu who was with the sage that saved me," she said, looking down to watch his hair slip through her fingers. "He came into Martiya."

At the mention of the red and black shu a dark look crossed Mecca's features. "You should stay away from him." He said looking up into his eyes. "He's dangerous."
Falling silent for a moment he looked off into the fire. "What did he want?" He asked turning back to her with a raised eyebrow.

"I couldn't very well leave in the middle of business hours," she smirked and looked up into his blue eyes. "And I know that perfectly well." She continued to watch him as she played with his hair and gave him another small shrug at his question.
"He asked me how I was, complimented Martiya and my singing and asked if you sold any of the items in your shop," she replied, shifting a little to lean more comfortably against the chair and his shoulder. "He wanted to know if you sold any of the items or only gave them away when the one you... when someone is in danger," she said with a small smirk. Who was she kidding? Mecca was what he was, and she couldn't change that. She wasn't entirely sure she wanted to either.

Mecca smirked and rested his head against her shoulder. "To him I sell nothing." He said to her, his eyes drooping shut again. "Why would he ask such questions? I hope he is not thinking of harming you again."

"I doubt there is much chance of that," she said softly, resting her head on top of his and running her fingers through his hair. "Not after what I told him." Or rather, didn't tell him but showed him, she thought with a small grimace. She fell silent for a moment and listened to his breathing and concentrated on the feel of his hair through her fingers. The question was there, just begging to be asked. But the last time she had come close, she had listened to her instinct and kept it to herself. But what if Yaku was right? She had been heartbroken to know that Matador would never love her in the way she wanted, why shouldn't she expect the same reciprocation from Mecca? They were much closer, much more intimate in the things they shared... was it because of love? Absently, she reached up and began to trace her fingers along the pendant that she wore religiously since he had given it to her.
"Mecca... have you ever once in your life... felt love towards something?" she finally asked. No harm came of asking a question, right? And at least she would know where she should stood.

Mecca opened his eyes and looked up to her. "I don't know." He said with a shrug of his shoulders. "Love is not a word I have ever learnt. I was taught it was cliche, superficial and only causes trouble."
He looked to the fire and then back to her. "How would I know?" He asked genuinely. Not that he was about to turn into a fluffy happy shu but he was curious about all things, especially things he did not understand.

Covet watched him with a small smirk. That had been much the answer she had expected from him. At his question, her smirk softened into a smile and she reached up to run a nail gently down the side of his face as she thought of an answer for him.
"I believe it is different for everybody," she said, looking back up into his blue eyes. "When you do things for the other person without having to be asked, go out of your way to make them happy, are there for them no matter what the consequences, find yourself searching them out just to simply be near them... it's the little things really," she replied, watching him closely. "Does that make any sense at all?"

Mecca thought about her words for a moment and watched her. It made perfect sense, though he did not like what it meant fot him. He did all those things for Covet. Did that mean that he ... loved her? "Yes that makes sense." He said softly, looking back to the fire. "I think maybe I have then." He said turning back to her. "Why do you ask?"

Covet blinked in mild surprise at his admission and studied him a moment longer before looking away and shrugging a little. "I don't know... I guess it was just something that Yaku had said," she replied before pushing herself up off his lap. "Let's go to bed," she smiled down at him and held her hand out to him.

Mecca stayed where he was and looked at her his head tilted to the side for a moment. "Do you love me?" He asked his voice blank. It was a honest question, she loved the furball, she loved her cafe, she even loved Scim.
After a moment he stood and put the fire out, plunging them into semi darkness, only the flicker of the oil lamp lighting both of them.

Covet looked down at him at his question and then watched him as he put the fire out. When he was finished, she walked up to him and slipped her hand into his, lacing their fingers together.
"I would have thought the answer to that would be obvious," she smiled up at him in the dim light. "Who was it that you might have loved?" she asked, taking a step closer and keeping her eyes on his.
