Does anyone know what the plot will be?

Apparently it's been "in the works" forever... but that page you linked to has a plot summary. Why not look there? mrgreen

Look on the bright side. the Hitchhiker's Guide movie was only "in the works" for about 10 years before they finally got around to doing a half-assed job of it.

damn right! I'm glad someone agrees with me - see the problem is that while Bill Nighy heart Alan Rickman/Warwick Davies heart Richard Griffiths (in everything he does) heart Sam Rockwell heart John Malkovich heart were actually fantastic, as usual....Stephen Fry confused Mos Def confused Zoey Deschanel scream Martin Freeman scream and even Steve Pemberton were not convincing - The Fifth Element is actually better for comedy and that is quite drastic! - Douglas Adams' books are pretty hilarious but in a very philosophically gloomy way - and the films are devoid of anything remotely funny.... maybe because we Brits have seen it all before....

I was actually pretty impressed by Mos Def and Sam Rockwell, but Simon Jones as Arthur couldn't be topped. ok so I don't mean to threadjack or anything but..

was I the only one that was totally disturbed by the love story between Trillian and Arthur? I mean... if they EVER go on to make sequels of the rest of the books, doesn't it sort of delete the entire storyline of "So long and thanks..."?!

I'm glad I saw it in a theatre that serves beer, it helped make the movie easier to swallow blaugh

Yes it does. What's the name of the lass that Arthur actually does fall in love with? And I think the problem with Martin Freeman was that he was far to young in his appearance and the way he played the character - you needed someone who could be kind of grumpy - I think Jack Davenport if he dyed his hair or maybe Richard Coyle with an English accent. There are a lot of great young British actors at the moment. Colin Firth could do Arthur Dent, so could Crispin Bonham Carter.
Don't get me wrong, Martin Freeman is great but just not in this film - it's a hard thing to do right once someone else has already done it right.
I'm off to work, see ya in a couple of days...

That would be Fenchurch, but anyone who's read "Mostly Harmless" would know she doesn't really matter either, in the long run.

In theory they could skip "So Long, And Thanks..." all together, except for the Marvin bit, of course. sad

They actually left the funniest lines of HHGTTG out of the movie!!
The whole bit about the babel fish being the clenching proof of the none existence of god. I bet it was probably a script change that was done after Douglas Adams died. I should have seen it coming being released by disney and trying to market it to americans who on the whole tend to leave religion alone as far as comedy is concerned (except for one or two notable exceptions) because of the influence of religous people in the states.
The only part that remained intact was the whale scene. Which I thought was really good. I spotted the voice of the whale as the guy who played Manny in Blackbooks but I can't remember his name.
I thought that Stephen Fry as the voice of the book was great casting, Simon Jones as Arthur was really good too.
But still ranked from top to bottom from the books, the radio play, the miniseries and the movie the movie is dead last.... By a mile!

his name is Bill Bailey and he's actually a great standup aswell - been at the Fringe 3 years in a row and back again this year
I agree with you about America and religious context - man, they suck - we can get away with spitting image here and yes, minister, and father ted...i could go on forever

i suppose your all in the hhg guild too, if not check it out, yea the rd movie has been in the works for about 7 years now and i have been waiting for it every single one of them!

I humbly apologize for this threadjack redface

I'm in the HHG guild too... but honestly I feel a little lonely there. Chalk it up to the fact that HHG is less obscure than RD especially now that the movie is out, and I'm like 15 years older than the average HHG guild member. (Ok so that probably applies here too, gawd I need a life)

As far as Americans & religious context, it's not THAT bad here. Miramax (owned by Disney) distributed "dogma" by Kevin Smith which torked off a lot of Catholics. A whole lot of things were left out of HHG, not just religious references.

PS, and now way offtopic. if you really have a good sense of humor about religion, or are agnostic/atheist, check out the "Preacher" graphic novels.

*grin*

For the record, I already own the special edition of Dogma and a complete set of Preacher TPBs. smile

Did you have to import the DVD (like I did), or do you live in the region 1 catchment area in the first place? smile
