this is the riot grrrl band reccomendation page. reccomend your favorite riot grrrl band to people and tell us why you like them. i'd like it if we could stick to riot grrrl bands though. a band like anti-flag who does have the riot grrrl ideals but is also an all boy band would be ok, but is not really considered a riot grrrl band. so don't mention them. this is riot grrrls only!!
so i guess i'll start.
Le Tigre - I really love this band. They say sooo much about everything and they're just amazing. Their music talks about butch-lesbian visibility and abortion and girls not being quiet anymore and even about how much they love their metro cards. On top of that the music itself is peppy and fun to listen to. it's great dance music. love it love it LOVE IT!!

ok my riot grrrl reccomendations are The Gossip heart , Team Dresch, L7, Heavens To Betsy, Bikini Kill, Bratmobile, and Tribe 8.
And Kittie is NOT riot grrrl. they are mainstream (and on a corprate label) and their music is not really making a statement or stirring up any political buzz. there is no message of empowerment really to be had in their lyrics... riot grrrl is all about political s**t.
i think that after their most recent album Le Tigre as they are now, is not riot grrrl. their political points have been watered down and now their music focuses more on catchy beats than righteous lyrics. they also are on a division of sony records... wtf?? they claim they did it for distribution access but i mean... they were so popular and had such a devoted fan base. i think that kathleen hana just got greedy and decided it was time for her to get a piece of the cash. so basically i think OLD le tigre = riot grrrl and This Island = sold out piece of s**t. 3nodding

i disagree. i think that their political-ness has stayed with them although their music has definately become over-produced. songs like "peace now" "viz" and "sick" all have huge political undertones. but the difference between this island and all their other albums is gigantic. it's like going from basement casio s**t to major record seller. but i like all of it so yeah.

Two words: Dingo 8. I'm not sure the music is in true Riot Grrl form, but the sentiments are definitely there. Unfortunately, Dingo 8 is out of commission for the moment. Mary, the bassist and vocal half of the duet, has had some problems with her family, to the point where she had to drop out of her other band, Cowboy Mouth. (One of the many bands I'd like to mention on this thread but those bands are mostly comprised of dudes and are way mellow. biggrin ) Anyhoo, you can sample their songs. If you live in NYC you can pick it up at the Tower Records in the Village.
