I think I know the answer by the themes and the topics already made here, but I figured I'd ask anyway. Which do you prefer?: plays or musicals?

It depends; when acting, I like plays more- but I suspect that when working backstage, musicals might be better. Or not. I'll have to think about this one.

It's really quite hard to pick. I mean, normally a play has a better story (althought this is by no means the norm) but musicals are normally more enjoyable. Hmm... confused

Matters, I prefer a play granted it has a great plot, but a musical can be very enjoyable as well, I think I would choose differently on different occation.

Musicals have always been more appealing to me. They can capture my imagination, even if they are crap. A play has never done that for me. I have seen tons of musicals over the year, and I can only think of two or three times that I have seen something really bad (*cough1776cough*). But when I think of all the plays I have seen in that time, I think I've only ever enjoyed two or three of them.
I think another factor is that I was RAISED on musicals. My mother never took me to plays when I was younger, so not that I'm older... it's not a normal thing for me to do I guess. I can't go into the city anymore without seeing a musical. It just doesn't feel right to me. I'm a creature of habit.

WickedElphie I have seen tons of musicals over the year, and I can only think of two or three times that I have seen something really bad (*cough1776cough*). I love 1776. I hated the revival on Broadway because it sucked, especially since John and Abigail did something they shouldn't have done. Anybody know what it was? But the movie is great, especially the restored version on DVD. I mention this because I was thinking of nominating it for the theme of July because of the historical relevance.

Honestly, I would rather see a great play than a great musical. I would rather be in a great play than in a great musical. Don't get me wrong - I love musicals. But I've just always enjoyed plays more.

Hmm...musicals, I'd say. I've just always loved the grandness of them...and that all comes from the music and singing. 3nodding

As everyone is saying, it really depends. There are some really good musicals, and there are some not so good. It's the same for plays. They aren't really all that different-- plays are just straightforward dialogue, and musicals are plays with the dialogue made into songs.
So, it's hard to say.

What makes or breaks a musical is really if the actors put passion in their music, and you just don't have that risk in a straight play.

Musicals definatly. I don't like sitting around on stage during plays when there's nothing to do .. example... Stand and Deliver. Easiest stage crew play.. ever. Musicals are more fun also in that you learn songs and dances and dance around on stage.. oh man.. good times.

I love musicals. They are more than just entertainment to me. They are engaging and in some instances, life changing. The Man of La Mancha, RENT and Quilters changed my views on how I live as a person that I don't think a regular music-less play could do. Music can give words a soul that without it, would just pass through your brain and into space.

I have to say I much prefer plays, the musicals are fun once in a while but something about the idea of sitting there looking in onto someones live, a more normal life (meaning no 'magical' soundtrack) is really fun. plus I think the sets are more detailed, and chalanging.

From a performing stance, I'd rather act in a play because of the fact that I have the tendency to sing off-tune. From an audience stance, I'd rather see a musical.
