You can't go wrong with anything from www.rondomusic.net, the best kept secret on the instrument scene. Standards surpass Squiers and even many MIM Fenders for a fraction of the price, plus you can get some nice features on them (I'm partial to the Sunburst Jazz with ashtrays, thumbrest, and block inlays for $160). They also sound and play very well, but you will need to do setup on it when you get it, and new strings.

Yamaha was the first bass I bought and am a rabid supporter for it....for beginners. Their BB series is rather cheap while being pretty damn good. The one I have is different from the recent BB's but they still have good construction, and great playability. They can play most any style you want, they just won't be the best at any of them.
I would say go for a beginner Yamaha, and start from there, but that may be my rabid love for my BB speaking.
