The jungle was abnormally dry today, the scorching rays of sunlight breaking through the canopy like javelins. Amidst the greenery and gentle humming of insects, there was the tumult of snapping twigs, crunching leaves and frustrated grunts.

Nestled on the ground between two large trees, Oz grumbled in anger as his attempts of making a gorilla's nest failed. Again. He'd conveniently 'borrowed' a book about primates from the entertainment room, but it offered little in the way of instructions. Only the odd picture of night-nests. If he was going to spend the rest of his life as a gorilla, he might as well be a proper gorilla.

"Gah!" he grumbled, tossing a pile of bent twigs and crushed leaves to the side. He had yet to get the thick dark skin on his hands, so they bled and stung from the tiny scratches of twigs.

Oz wasn’t the only one out to build a nest, not to far away Miller was having his own problems with nest design, something in the back of his mind was nagging him to get outside of the duplex and start living outside, and with out hardly a second thought Miller was wandering around the hot jungle trees trying to find one big enough for his new ‘home.’

Of course this quest was promptly interrupted when Oz tossed a rather large pile of twigs at the budgie bird boy. He gave a shrill shriek that could only be matched by the birds around them as the pile of twigs found his face. “OWF! Waw’tch ‘ere ye ‘row dat!” It was rather hard to talk with a mouth or rather beak of twigs.

"WAAHHH! What was that!?"

The piercing sound of Miller's shriek startled the bulky half-ape-man so much that he dropped his newest collection of twigs and leaves and scarpered into the brush. He didn't go far though. He stopped and slowly started to creep back towards his 'nest', peering through the foliage, which barely concealed his darkened form anyway.

When he spied a fellow Islander, and one with a face full of twigs no less, he rushed from behind his cover.

"Oh I am so sorry! I didn't even see you there..." he began uttering and mumbling.

His somewhat disturbing appearance was the last thing on his mind.

Miller slowly sat up ruffling the feathers all along the back of his head and body shaking loose as much as he could. Slowly Miller took noticed of the larger and much furrier looking islander. “You really should watch where your throw a bundle of twigs like that…”

Slowly he got up continuing to pick the remaining leaves from his clothes and feathers with his strange 4 fingered hands that looked more like a birds claws. “So, let me guess you’re out making a nest here too?”

"Yeah, I'm sorry about that..." he apologised again, reaching a large hand over to help pick out some of the stray twigs. But he withdrew, seeing his grotesquely over-sized hand and instead brought it to the ground to rest on his knuckles once more.

The feathery-looking fella's question should have sounded odd to Oz. Should have. But didn't. After his time on the Island, nothing struck him as odd anymore. Not even the fact that yes, he was building a nest too. Until last week, Oz was unaware that gorilla's even made nests!

"Yeah...I kind of was...trying to at least," he chuckled, looking down at the mess of twigs and leaves he had tried to construct into something that would be comfy for his vastly increased bulk.

"You look better equipped to make nests though..." he commented idly, having finally noticed the Islander stood in front of him.

Miller shrugged it off a bit taking another moment to try and smooth down some of his more wild feathers that refused to stay down. He noted the rather large hand reaching for him and felt the sudden sense of urgency to fly away, but the instinct died as quickly as Oz lowered his arm.

”Heh, kinda makes you see animals building a nest in a whole new light doesn’t it?” the younger boy grinned and joined in the bit of laughter while reflecting on his own nest building thoughts. “I might look equipped, but really? Come on I don’t even have wings yet and my brains telling me to scale the tallest tree and build a nest out of grass and twigs!”

It was true, for some reason he had yet to grow anything resembling wings yet during his first two transformations. Still he supposed that was a blessing from some of the tales he heard about islanders growing wings in the past.

"Makes me glad I don't actually have the urge to climb trees...I'm terrified of heights," he replied with a smile, briefly gazing up at the canopy which seemed so far away.

He shuddered and his massive shoulders seemed to quiver all over.

"My name's Oz," he introduced himself, bowing his mishapen head.

Running from between his eyes and along his skull was a bony ridge that adult male gorillas developed. Thankfully, it was barely noticeable underneath his fuzzy head. But you could still see the muscles moving on it everytime Oz moved his jaw.

Miller couldn’t help but laugh a bit at that, “You don’t look much like the type to be afraid of heights. I never liked them when I was little, then my mom talked me in to riding a roller coaster and I got over it pretty quick.”

Grinning Miller returned the bow, however he caught just the slightest hint of the ridge along Oz’s skull and decided it would be better not to ask. Last time he asked to many questions of a labtech and he got a rather nasty shock finding out first hand how bad the chips could really be and had no intention of questioning any one on the island since then.

“My names Miller by the way, resident Budgie I guess unless you count all the real ones hiding up in the tree’s.” It still felt odd to refer to him self as a Budgie, but he supposed that was better then being a flea or a tick, actually that was a lot better then a lot of things when he thought about it.

Oz was mildly surprised at Miller's cheerful outlook about the situation. But he himself had entered that stage of denial where he'd accepted his fate with mild humour. He was turning into a mini-Kong afterall. Who wouldn't want an excuse to rampage around, tearing things to bits and fighting lizards?

"Yeah, even when I was human, I looked like the biggest sissy," he smiled, revealing sharp canines. He then sat himself down, deciding to give up his nest-making for the time being.

"A pleasure to meet you Miller. If you're resident budgie, then meet the Island's only walking fuzzy blob," he chuckled heartily, not afraid to poke fun at his own weight issues.

Finding he needed to keep his hands busy (all four of them now), he twiddled the thumbs on his feet together, but picked up any assortment of twigs and twirled them around his fingers in his hands.

Deep down Miller wasn’t always this light hearted, on his first arrival to the island and learning his fate he became very bitter about things, it wasn’t till he ran in to an old online friend Nita that he finally started to settle down a bit. Beyond that joking around was the only way to hide the fact that he was torn between miserable and at peace with the island.

“Meh, I was given crap all through my few glorious high school years before coming here. Always the weakest kid in class, computer geek, all the typical things people for some reason hated in school.” He shrugged, “That’s the one perk about this place, no one gives you that much s**t about things because in the long run where all screwed over and turning in to animals.” His brief moment of complaint or as an old friend would say ‘bitchen!’ was cut short with a chuckle. “Fuzzy blob? Sorry I think Nita’s tail has you beat by a long shot in the fuzzy department.”

He eyed Oz’s feet for a moment with envy, he missed having normal feet, now he had some strange bird like claw feet, 3 long claw like toes and a giant mass in the middle to support him, and he thought he had long toes before this.

"Meh, we sound kind of similar - we have nothing to miss really," he shrugged those massive shoulders. And he chuckled at Miller's comment. "Ah yes, Nita. I have seen her around and you're right...he tail would beat my arse in the fluffy stakes. Probably in the pretty stakes too."

He had no allusions to his appearance and knew full well he was an ugly bugger, even before the transformations took place. And if Miller had voiced his opinion on Oz's 'normal' feet, he would have been hard-pressed to believe they were normal. He could hold a cup of tea with his foot!

"So, other than bitching about your previous life, got any other hobbies?" he laughed, picking up a large fan-like leaf and gently bopping Miller on the head with it.
PostPosted: Tue Sep 26, 2006 4:59 pm

“Nope, stupid people back home or people on an island who understands the bigger problems in life, like picking which outfits will still fit when your grow a new tail or some other random appendage that doesn’t belong there.” Miller grinned more at the comments about Nita.

”I knew her long before the island through the internet, met her once for Christmas till just recently when we bumped in to each other on the island. I don’t think my minds ever been this shaken up till that day… or was it when I found a tail poking out my pants…”

Miller didn’t often judge how people looked, he knew for a fact by most standards that he was a rather scrawny and pathetic looking kid. As for his old life he gave a slowly sigh and relaxed under the leaf bap, hey if Oz held it there it made a nice shadey spot just for him!

”Well, before the island it was DDR, World of Warcraft and any other games I could get my hands on and a bit of lacrosse on the side. Though video games get a little harder when you only have 4 fingers and your thumbs not quite in the right spot any more…”

He held up his hands shaped almost y like with a finger in the middle pokeing straight out where his middle finger and ring finger fussed in to one.

Oz tried to listen to Miller's ramblings, but he was lost at 'World of Warcraf.' He had followed the conversation pretty well, up to that point. His knowledge of the internet, and computers in general, stopped at chatrooms and video games. And even then, he still preferred a PlayStation over a PC. No specifications or installation instructions. Stick a disc in a box and away you go!

He was just processing a response to Miller's former acquaintance with the red-panda girl when he made the mistake of mentioning sport. Well, Oz's eyes just lit up with enthusiasm.

"Ah! Now I've heard of lacrosse. They don't play it much back home, we're into all the really physical sports and stuff," he said with relish, hi-jacking the conversation.

Miller had always been one to ramble when he was in the mood, just the thought of video games made the budgie boy a bit happier. Still, it sucked not being able to play on a playstation because you couldn't hold the controler right.

"Lacrosse for me was always weird, it was like... that sport every one knows but dosn't care about because none of the 'Oh my god football jocks!' or baseball kids played."

He raised an eyebrow now at the back home comment, "So then your not from the east coast of the US then, at least not any where above North Carolina, farther south you go the less people care."

"Lacrosse is a sport I think could have been big, since we have a lot of sports that require either hand-eye coordination or foot coordination. Lacrosse has both. Hockey just seems to offer more in masculinity, I suppose...and the ball stays on the ground."

Now, it was Oz's turn to ramble. He'd been introduced to many new sports whilst he studied at University, and even got chance to try a few during the Fresher Week. But drinking was all the sport he needed.

Oz let out a sudden laugh.

"You think I'm American? Lord no...no offense...I'm British. My accent has been a bit muddled by this," he laughed, then pointed to his throat. Indeed, his vocal chords had changed slightly as his change progressed, and would probably end in a voice so deep as to challenge Barry White.
