For extra credit and as a school activity, I'm part of a group of seniors/juniors that organizes fun literary events for kids at our local library. In addition to other things, every six months we choose a series or popular book and have a day themed around that book with activities relating to it. (For example, we did a Harry Potter day where we dressed up as the characters and made up games relating to the books, we also did Chronicles of Narnia.)
Anywho, we got permission from the library to have a Series of Unfortunate Events day and am looking for suggestions for fun activities related to it! I'm really excited about it and it should be a lot of fun... What we have planned so far is we'll be dressing up as the orphans and other central characters, read excerpts from the books, goody bags, and possibly a showing of the movie. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for other fun stuff..

Burn the school down. Have tea with sugar, but no one wanting any sugar. Speak in code. Use coasters.

Invitations in Sebald. Scavenger hunt using clues in books? (in ASOUE or otherwise (like Ramona Quimby etc.)) Seconding the coasters. ^_~ Bowls of fruit. Maybe have stations themed to gaurdians? (Aunt Jo, Monty, etc?) Have them reorganize the library like the Hostile Hospital filing system. (just kidding!) wink Goodie bags: commonplace books, maybe ribbons or costume glasses or vampire fangs for people to dress up as Violet, Klaus, and Sunny?, VFD temp tattoos?
I'll let ya know if I can think of anything else.
Le monde ici c'est tranquil, RS
PS What library do you work at? I'd so go if it was close. XD

Have people dressed up as some of the guardians show them around the stations?

Somebody has to dress like the orphans... Do you have any Gothic Archies music? That would be great. Oh, and when you enter the library, the librarian will ask you about your mother...

Animeomega Somebody has to dress like the orphans... Do you have any Gothic Archies music? That would be great. Oh, and when you enter the library, the librarian will ask you about your mother... Salute them and say "Well hello, young lady, have you been good to your mother?" wink I wonder if they'll give the correct response. Oh and if you need a description of the librarian look at TUA pg 163. And yeah, Gothic Archies music would be good!...though the CD comes out on Oct 10th, dunno if that'd be too late. What else....milk from the Diary as snacks? But no peppermints. ^^;

second the VFD tatoos, or at least stickers.
Have a code breaking activity where they have to decipher literary locks and codes to get prizes.

Teach them how to write "secret messages" with lemon juice, or teach them code... I like the idea above of having someone dressed as a Guardian at each station.

Yeah codes, Guardians, and secret messages are all great ideas and I hope we'll have enough people to do it. I wonder if secret messages with lemon juice would be hard to do... anyone know specifics on how that works? whee

Do a scavenger hunt type of game.
Separate the kids in small groups and give them each a note saying something like:
"It's my greatest displeassure to inform you some sad news. Sad in the sense of unhappy since your parents just died. Sad as distressing because if you don't solve this puzzle you will be trapped by a terrible man. And finaly sad as in poor orphans without a home after such terrible... terrible news. (and so on. I'm not feeling imaginative)"
So using all sorts of codes, clues, and secrets you create a mini adventure and you must all dress up as guardians and villans. One would have to be Olaf (and thus dressed in several costumes during the game) xd Yeah, I'm not feeling imaginative.
