[[ PRP between Hiru and Para, please don't post without permission! <3 <3 ]]

"I spy with my little eye, something beginning with...L?" The red mare swivelled her ears and released a sigh as no reply came. In theory, her lack of company was not down to her anti-social behavior but more due to the personalities of the pair of stallions which made their home at her teepee - she had Paramekia who had his head rather far up his own backside and Cloud who was more concerned with moping in a corner than with being even remotely sociable.

She couldn't win.

Nay, as the regal stallion had pointed out rather cooly, she was a foal at heart and simply couldn't help but strive for a little bit of fun. So far, the only playmates she had ever found were the foals of other herds but she wasn't complaining, one day she would eventually bump into a stallion who was so versed in selective hearing that he could handle her.

"Was leaf, in case you were wondering." She added, glancing at the fish as it swam by her. Having taken to following the river at a somewhat relaxed pace she was well on her way to the lakeside but she was hardly going to rush herself today...

What a big, wide world this place had proven to be; a chore all but impossible with one so young. And he'd been expressly instructed to stay out of it. In fact, Kali really couldn't have made herself more clear. Something along the lines of 'don't wander far' echoed somewhere in the back of his mind, but it was little more than a whisper behind the wide-eyed, awed expression he wore everyplace he looked.

"Wow!" was the initial exclamation, tempted by a tree that smelled so delicious, he could taste it from all the way over there. The foal couldn't help but prance curiously toward it, drawing him away from the teepee nestled in the heart of the Kawani village with eager little steps. As he inched forward, his mother's wishes must have been anything but forward on his mind, because he didn't even think twice.

Peering up into its leafy branches, he murmered absently: "It didn't look so big from back there..." Small, red globes dangled from them here and there, weighing down the twiggy fingers... decidedly out of reach. He tested it once or twice by rearing back on his haunches, and stretching into the air until he couldn't keep his balance, just to be sure, but it only served to further cement the reality. He was nowhere near tall enough.

Freshly disappointed, Kalani's ears wilted and drooped rather pathetically as he landed back on all fours, so he stole a look around, hoping to find something at least equally exciting.

Nothing struck him at first - grass and human homes were less than interesting, even to him - but a second skim over land stretched before him coaxed a grin across his expression.

He wasn't particularly sure what it was, but he was sure it was small, fluffy, and energetic. Maybe it would want to play! Kalani grinned widely at the prospect, and gave his wings a small rustle before bounding toward it, swishing his short little tail.

To someone else, it might have been obvious the agitated flick of its fluffy tail, and the way it turned on its heels and bolted meant the squirrel wasn't keen on romping around with equines. But he wasn't someone else, and it wasn't so clear to him. In fact, he intrepreted it in a rather backward fashion: it must have wanted to play tag! (How was he supposed to know otherwise?)

Oblivious to the poor critter's dismay, Kalani chased it for a good dozen strides or more, stretching his gangly limbs as fast as he possibly could to keep up. He did a decent job of it too, until they hit the forest's edge. That was his undoing; the squirrel took no hesitation to find refuge in the shelter of a nearby tree.

He was left behind to stare wistfully up at it, until its small form disappeared into the leafy foliage. "Oops..." He hadn't known that would happen; now what was he going to do?

The chatter of the disgruntled squirrel did not take long to reach her ears. In fact, said squirrel had made it it's duty to spread a rather stern warning to all its companions in the hope that they would not have to endure the same disrespect that he had. Glancing up, her eyes fixed on the fluffy tail and the flailing paws briefly before she shook her head, they always did enjoy exagerating.

Still, she couldn't help but submit to the curiosity brewing in her belly as she moved away from the chittering rodents and continued on her way along the river that just happened to be meandering rather lazily as it approached the forest's edge. Step by step, the light began to break through the now scattered canopy until at last there were simply no trees at either side.

She didn't move that fast did she?

Arching her neck, she took the opportunity to have a few well needed stretches and pursed her lips. When she was suitably comfortable once more she at last began to take in her new surroundings, ears swivelling round like minature satellites in the hopes of hearing any tell tale signs of company but it was her eyes that sighted the critter first.

...Now why did he look so familiar? He was awfully small to be someone that she knew.

Freshly disappointed, the foal scuffed a forehoof through the grass stubble, heaving a sigh. What to do, what to do...

Lifting his head, Kalani dragged his blue gaze across the horizon, hoping for something interesting. And something interesting he got, to his surprise. He peered sideways at the mare for a moment, childishly leaning his head... And then he bounded toward her.

He planted his feet once he'd closed the distance, giving his tail a fervent wag. "Hiya miss, what's your name? I'm Kalani." Caution and procedure were obviously something he hadn't quite grasped, despite his misguided attention to manners. "I was just lookin' for something to do, what're you up to?" 'Don't talk to strangers' was apparently a lesson he hadn't covered yet, judging by his exuberance.

Familiar in appearance, maybe, but certainly not in demeanor. His spirits had apparently rebounded already.

Well, he was certainly not subtle. It was odd for this mare to be stunned, but the foal managed to do this and for a while she simply stared at him. Perhaps it was because she was so unused to being asked so many questions at once or perhaps...

No.

"In answer to your questions," she began softly, continuing to look over the young colt's form, "My name is Yei Umeko and it is a pleasure to meet you, Kalani." Introductions were always best, first and foremost it would help her in remembering who he was but that name was completely unfamiliar to him.

"As for what I am doing -" She hesitated for a few moments, canting her head to the side as she glanced the foal up and own once more, taking particular interest in the markings upon his legs - she had seen those somewhere before but her mind clearly was not cooperating with her when it came to recalling where from.

"Nothing really, I was looking for something to do myself." She confessed and flicked her gaze away from the colt to admire the given location, "It's terribly boring today, isn't it?"
PostPosted: Sun Mar 18, 2007 1:16 am

"Can I call you Yei?" was the first thing he managed, but not before blinking unsuspectingly at such a long name. And without waiting, "nice to meet you too!" He seemed to nod approvingly at this, bobbing his head once or twice.

It was rare he had opportunity to appeal to the approval of others. In fact, Yei was the first he had met outside family - but he recognized that observing gaze (from his mother). Kalani regarded it with a moment of consideration, unsure how to best approach. "Whatcha lookin' at?" he asked at last, once it occurred to him she was paying particular interest. He proudly flexed his little wings too though, splaying them lightly in the wind.

"Kinda normal," he admitted, after taking a moment to compare it with what he'd come to recognize as 'average'. Yes, this was an average day - not that he thought that a bad thing. Quite the opposite, really.

"... Don't tell Kali though." You know, just in case she happened to know his mother. He hated to think what would happen if, some day, she found out he did this on a daily basis. Then he'd really be in trouble. He'd made a pretty good job of being sneaky so far though, and he admitted that to himself with another nod.

"Yes, you may." Yei found it quite refreshing to have a foal so lively around her. Granted, he had wings which troubled her slightly but she always managed to push her dislike for the exotic aside when it came to children. Perhaps it was because she believed she could change them, ensure that they didn't become so pompous but she could never be so sure of that.

"And, I promise I will not tell, Kali." She added, her tone completely honest as she was completely unaware of who 'Kali' was. She may have passed her during her exploration of the land but she had never stopped to speak with her - if kalani was anything to go by, she would know exactly why she had spoken to her.

Wings.

However, up until this point she had evaded his question about what she had been looking at. She would rather not have responded for fear of insult but on the other hand, refusing to insult may cause harm too. Besides...it was rude to stare and she wouldn't be so hypocritical as to cast her own views aside.

"As for what I was looking at, your markings look similar to another I know... I just found it rather interesting."
PostPosted: Sun Mar 18, 2007 11:48 am

It was such a simple statement, but the promise assured him he was in the clear, and he relaxed visibly. "Good. I dunno if we could be friends if you did." The foal eyed her skeptically - comically, even.

"Really?" He obviously wasn't phased by the comment. "Do you know my brother and sister then? They look lots like me." Of course, they did look like him, and not the other way around. Leave it to a child to think the world revolves around him. Surely, he'd grow out of it.

"How come interesting tho'?" Kalani took a moment to look himself over, craning his neck to peer at what markings he could see. "They look sorta boring to me. Especially if you've seen 'em already."

Righting himself, the foal turned back to Yei. "You're purty tho', I bet no one else looks like you. Unless you have brothers or sisters too..." It would have been hard to tell if he thought siblings a good or a bad thing; his tone was noncommittal, even though he seemed well-adjusted.

"I just wasn't aware that others could have those markings, they're rather exotic." She confessed, still guarding her words for fear of jumping to conclusions and perhaps upsetting him. He had made no reference to a father so she was uncertain as to whether they really were related... how many soquili in this world had the same markings as the soquili she was thinking of?

"And..." She paused, glancing at her own coat calmly. To her it was a little too vibrant, the swirls that she had once loved had grown a little irritating - all for a good reason, she blamed her colour and her lack of wings for her lack of well...anything?

Still, she had never received a compliment in such a carefree fashion before and regardless of his age, it made her smile. The fact that someone else had spoken of their appreciation somehow made her feel a lot better.

"Thank you." Was all the mare could afford as a reply, canting her head to the side as she observed Kalani in an almost bemused fashion, "Who is Kali anyway?" She asked in a conspiratorial fashion.

'Others' was completely lost on him. He might have inquired as to what others, had he caught it. But he hadn't. "Iunno why they wouldn't..." Lani and Hototo did, after all. Why not others too? Of course, 'exotic' was a rather foreign concept to him; most things seemed that way for now.

"Uh-huh," was his nonchalant reply, but it would have been difficult to begrudge him for it, as though he was simply too young to know 'you're welcome' was an appropriate response. The exchange held his attention only temporarily too - he dropped it easily for the next.

Kalani eyed her again though, in an attempt to judge her trustworthiness. "Kali? Oh." Peering left, and right, he inched closer, and uttered his response in a whisper. "She's my momma."

And then he bounded away, flagging his little tail. "That's why you can't tell her!" A short distance off, the foal planted himself again, and gave a somber nod. "She'd be pretty mad."

"I see." Yei didn't see entirely but she found it rather amusing to watch as the foal crept around. It was almost as though he was frightened at the prospect of being discovered or overheard. She really was curious to find out how though, unless of course his mother had links to every creature within the forest so that she might know...

"And why would she be angry?" She enquired, lowering her head and arching a brow questioningly. She made sure to keep her voice soft to show she could keep a 'secret' and offered a slight smile - there was a part of her that hoped that when she had children they would be quite as entertaining but another part of her worried ever so slightly.

Wa he trying to tell her he had run away?
PostPosted: Mon Mar 19, 2007 9:58 pm

Of course he was wary! It was only proper, sneaky as he was. He may not have been old enough to master the finesse of conversation, but he was old enough to know he liked finding trouble, and living to tell about it later. Especially living to tell about it later... And that voice of reason was the voice of experience, to be sure.

It was all but obvious; the foal fixed her with a look of disbelief. "Why wouldn't she?" Kalani stole another glance - right, then left, before looking back to Yei. "I thought all mommas got mad when they say not to do somethin' and you go and do it anyhow."

Explaining himself seemed to instill him with pride though; he lifted his youthful head and gave it a nod of affirmation. "S'okay though. So long as you don't tell her, she won't know. So long as I don't get too dirty or anything... I sneak off all the time." Even if it hadn't been so much intentional this time.

He was the most apt of his siblings, if he did say so himself. The most likely to spend the day outside the village, and return before sunset unscathed. Of course, Kali did know, and she did worry, but he knew well enough to check in, and she knew well enough to let him some freedom.

The day he wandered beyond her protection though... That would be the day he would have hell to pay, and he knew it. He knew it, and he heeded it well. So well, he didn't dare venture far, no matter how much his curiosity goaded him. Hopefully though, today would not be a day he was tempted.

Given Yei's age, it was safe to say that Kalani was in reasonably safe hooves. She may not have been a mother herself but she had guided enough foals to know of the dangers. Freedom was one thing but encouraging a child to enter dangerous territory was another and she was not one to be so irresponsible. Granted, she had quite a few faults of her own but a lack of care to the vulnerable was not one of those faults.

Still, it was clear that despite his curiosity he had a very intelligent mind and that made him all the more interesting. Although he appeared to be a rebel this mare had a suspicion that deep down, he was smart enough to know when something was a bad idea. In this regard, his mother would have to be commended.

"I'm not sure I would be angry." Yei mused at last, pushing her thoughts to the side as she kept her gaze on the foal. "I suspect I would be more worried and disappointed than angry...provided you came home safely." She added, furrowing a brow at the possibility of an injured foal - if she found her own children injured she'd be out for blood.

"Even so, I promise I won't tell anyone you strayed as long as you promise to stay out of trouble." She shot a side glance towards the slopes and shook her head, "And provided you do not try to nose dive into the lake." She added as she glanced at his wings.

"Regardless of how fun the hawks may claim it to be. Deal?"
PostPosted: Wed Mar 21, 2007 6:06 am

"Worried and disappointed must look an awful lot like mad then." The foal gave a sober nod. "Doesn't matter, anyway." It had been so long since his last reprimanding, it seemed a lot like 'forever' to him, so Kalani wasn't particularly concerned. "I'll always come back okay." Always. He was as careful about that as a foal with such limited knowledge and experience could be.

"Pff." Stay out of trouble. That was what everyone said. The colt gave a sort of rebellious snort, but his expression didn't look so obstinate he seemed like he might be the really troublesome sort. Just a little ornery.

But not so ornery nose diving into the lake actually sounded like a good, or even appealing idea. "Do they actually do that?" His nose wrinkled in a look of distaste. "I tried jumping into the lake once..." The result was something of a belly-flop, as he recalled. There had to be some sort of more graceful approach it it, he was sure, but for now it didn't seem like such a good time. "It wasn't much fun," he said finally.

"Anyhow, deal, I guess." Kalani threw her a sideways, almost skeptical glance, as though consorting with an adult in this fashion seemed a little off to him. He had already decided she was passable though, so he nodded a little.

"Well they almost do." Yei admitted, swivelling her ears at the slight sounds about her. She should have confessed that she was exaggerating a little but she knew of a few questionable individuals who would gladly hurl themselves into a lake head first...anything for a 'buzz' or adrenaline rush.

"I've noticed a lot of boys enjoy doing it as well though." She smiled teasingly and shook her head, "Although it looks rather painful to simply jump in, the water makes a nasty crack when your tummy hits it." She continued, canting her head to the side as she continued to watch the child - a child that was drifting further away from her each minute.

Did children ever sit still?

"It's easier to wade in. Have you ever swam before?" She continued. If there was one thing she wanted to do, it was to teach her own children how to swim...it was a handy skill to have on fiendishly warm days!
