For almost the whole day, Erik had been by himself, at a secluded part of the lake, skipping stones. He'd been hoping to see someone, anyone, but hadn't seen anybody at all. Throwing another rock, he let out a sigh. For the past few days, he'd been feeling so happy, so joyful, so why was he feeling like crap today? Tossing one more stone, he then let a grunt/sigh and sat down on a nearby log.
Talking to himself, he ran through everything he'd done in the past few days, from playing with Katina and Glacus at the beach to wrestling with Chris at his duplex. Then an idea hit him, he had to talk to Branwan. He had to tell her about his mood swings and his problems with his instincts. He had to get it off his chest. Now if only he could find her...

Speak of the devil and she shall appear…
Branwan’s was still spinning with the horrible nightmare that she had had. What, she wondered, do you call a nightmare that happens in the day? She was walking down the river, her feet in the water. A noonmare? Perhaps. I really shouldn’t sleep in the day, she thought to her self.
She saw Erik over where the river widened into the lake and waved hello to him, speeding up her pace to meet him. “Well if it isn’t my favorite puppy!” she called when he was within earshot.

Erik was lost in thought when he saw Branwan. His ears shot up and a big smile formed on his muzzle. Running towards her, Erik sweeped Branwan up in hug, then giving her a quick kiss. "You have no idea how happy I am to see you!" he said, still smiling.
Breaking the embrace, he still held her hands. Erik asked her, "So Branwan, how are you, what you been up to lately?"

“Oh, not much,” said Branwan smiling, “but I gatta tell ya’, that wolf friend a’ yours is cra-zy” she shook her head smilingly, a faint smile still lingering on her face.
She sat down, looking out over the water, “I had the worst nightmare, you wouldn’t believe!” She flopped back and looked up at the sky.

"Oh well, that's Chris." he replied. Happy just to be around Branwan, he sat down next to her.
"A nightmare? What happened in it?" he asked. By now, Erik knew that a nightmare meant that another round of changes were bound to happen soon, so he had to be strong for Branwan if it happened here, which it probably would.

“Yeah, I guess so,” Branwan said smiling, “I mean this island wouldn’t be any fun if it didn’t have any crazies.”
Her smile melted like an ice cube in the Sahara as she thought of her dream, “well it started off okay,” she said quietly, “I was in a meadow, right, looking up at the sky? And above me there was this bird flying, it looked sorta like,” she wriggled her fingers, thinking of the right words to describe it, “do you know the old native American myth ‘Rainbow crow’? sorta like the crow in that.” But as it flew it’s feathers started dropping off and I say that they weren’t feathers, right? They were little kids in really big shirts, each one of a different color, right. So the crow, which now looks like a skeleton of a crow flies down and starts eating the little kids and when I run over to try to make it fly away it turns and starts attacking me!” she shivered and sat up.
“But that’s not the worst part,” she said, leaning against Erik, “the worst part is it means I’m going to change.” Yes, Branwan could put two and two together as well as the next girl and she knew what was coming.

As Branwan talked about her nightmare, Erik's expression went from a warm smile to a look of deep thought. In his mind, he tried as best he could to picture the scene, and he was worried about her. He didn't want her to feel scared, he just wanted her to be happy.
As she leaned into him, Erik held one of Branwan's hands in his own, while he used his other one to gently stroke her hair. Looking her in the eyes, he said "It'll be alright, because I'll be here for you when you change." As he said this, he gave her hand a comforting little squeeze. "Branwan, I care about you more than anything, that's why I don't want you to be alone when it happens, nobody should have to go through that sort of thing alone."

“Oh, you don’t have ta be here when I change,” Branwan said, squeezing his hand tightly. She was just saying that, she wanted him here more then anything.
She frowned as she felt an odd tumbling sensation in her stomach that had nothing to go with happiness.

Smiling softly, he said "I know I don't have to be here, but I want to be here, I want...to be with you...more than anything in the world."
Nuzzling the side of her head gently, he noticed her frown. "Are you alright? Is...it starting?"He knew that her change was starting, he just said it out of impulse.

Branwan felt warm at his response and smiled, her eyes closed.
She nodded, bracing her self for the pain, “Yes,” she said softly.
It started with her feet. She cried out in pain as she felt her ankle twist and bend into a new, more toe-oriented position. Speaking of her toes, she felt another painful twisting sensation as her big toe moved to the side of her foot. She grabbed onto Erik’s arm as her first three toes lengthened, the skin breaking and healing rapidly.
The pain subsided for the moment, “maybe I should take up ballet,” she said, her thoughts cloudy with pain.

As Branwan closed her eyes and nodded, Erik hugged her tightly, giving her loving kiss on the head, "I'll stay with you, I promise." he whispered into her ear.
Erik started to let out a few tears as she cried out in pain, he couldn't stand to see the girl he cared about so much in this much pain. As she held his arm, Erik teary eyes were fixed on her changing feet, watching in awe and fear.
At her comment, all he could do was let out a choked-up chuckle.

Branwan shut her eyes as the pain began again, wrapping her arms around Erik.
This pain was relatively mild compared to the first. She felt a tightening in her legs as her skin hardened as callused. She had just opened her eyes when she felt a tingly sort of pain up her back and down her front and arms as soft downy feathers grew there.
“Well,” she said, wiping away her tears prematurely, “that wasn’t so bad.”

Holding on to her for dear life, Erik's eyes went wide as he watched the black, downy feathers sprout on Branwan's back. He hoped to God that it would be over soon.
When the changes seemed to stop, he pulled back and looked at her face, feeling glad that it hadn't changed...yet. Still crying, but relieved that it seemed to be over, he held her close to him.

Sadly Branwan’s changes were not yet over, she pushed back from him with a scream of pain and horror as her hands began to change.
Before her terrified eyes her first two fingers began to merge even more together until they became only one finger. At the same time her other two fingers started to shrink until they were half the size they should have been.
She let out another scream and flipped over onto her stomach as long stiff feathers sprouted from her tail nub.
Shaking she brought her self to a kneeling position, “is it over?” she asked the world at large, not expecting an answer.

As Branwan pushed away from him, Erik fell backwards, landing almost directly on his tail, but he made no sound, not even a small whimper, he was just too fixed on her and he was oblivious to everything else.
His ears automatically swiveled to face Branwan, allowing Erik the...'pleasure' of hearing the bones in Branwan's hands as they shifted and changed. He heard them as they popped, cracked, split, fused, and disappear into one another, it was a most disturbing moment for the foxboy.
As she got into a kneeling position, he tried to speak, but he was at a loss for words. So, he kneeled down as well, putting a pawed hand on her shoulder, finally finding the words to reply to her question "I hope so...I really, really hope so."
