most people today would answer kantou because now kansai ben sounds stupid compared to kantou, but this was not always case. let us compare no?

関西の話
Kansai's story

kansai, was the captial, the cradle of the nation, for years, centuries. it was where all the knowledge was, it was rich, and kansai-ben was the hyoujungo of the time.

kansai-ben always had many polite forms, whereas kantou did not. kansai was the envy of japanese provinces (about 200 at the time)

関東の場合
Kantou's case

there is a cold hate for kansai in kantou. kansai, being the cradle of japan, left kantou, plain and uncared for.

our dialect had no polite form at the time(examples in next post), at was incredibly colloquial, with only a few words used by nobility. indeed back then saying "okaasan" was "kaa" because we had no word for ~san and no o~ suffixes.

then, when in edo culture started to increase and learning, from the example i kansai we made polite language.

some old word were abolished, and are not much heard to day, except in some regions, some words, and remote old villages.

昔で関東弁の場合
kantou-bens case in the past

it was very colloquial. out of the words in this list the highlighted ones survive:

ってぇこったぁ= という事は
ひゃっくり= しゃっくり
しゃっこい=冷たい
てーへんだぁ=大変だ!
〇〇んち= ○○さんの家
田中んち
田中さんの家

~てみる= ~てみん
やっぱし= やっぱり
がってんしょうち= I see
= Horribly over used here, its like saying "right"
Ex.
こら、なんか変わった奴を見てさ、話してさ、笑って、ボクが怖くなったんだよ!
hey, i saw like this guy right, and he was talking right, and laughing and i got scared!
つう= 言う
つーか= This is というか And people use to mean like ”You know"
つーか、なんか変わった奴をみてさ、笑ってさ、なんかボクが怖くになったんだよ!
hey you know, i saw like this guy right, and he was laughing right and i got scared.
this is how youth talk today
なんか= Its like, the colloquial like
しゃーねー= しょうがない
そんでもって= そして ・ それで
おっ、ぶっ、かっ、けっ= PREFIX to verbs for emphasis
You know how ~らない Becomes ~んない
We can make that more colloguial by making it
~んねぇ
なんてったって= 何と言っても
うっちゃる= すてる
すってんてん=It means to have fallen low, like i am so poor i to have fallen low,(すってんてん)
もっかい= もう1回
こんち= 今日 (きょう)
だっちゃん=大事なもの
めっける= 見つかる
おっぺす= 押す
ちょっくら= ちょっと
すっとこどっこい= ばか
って= という
まっつぐ= まっすぐ
しと= 人

another common thing back then was, like how ae/ai become yaa in nagoya ben in kantou these always became ee

this only modernly last for adjective ending in ai or oi.

words that arent highlighted that have modern transaltions, were used by the nobility.

lets sample some sentences:

i am not going!

私がけっ来てるんだよ!

mom, i loves you:

かあ、好きよ!

look:

ちょっくらおっ見てねぇ!

there was no polite form, but everyone still regarded kantou as having very refined pronounciation.
