thats a good idea for a thread i loive to improv. im in 2 bands and the first one ive been in the longest doesnt give me any room really for improv. its a progressive rock/indie/bits of jazz/metally at times sort a band. tho im forming this other band thats a trio as well with some different ppl which is a jazz/indie/latin and watever we really want to play thing (if you havent noticed i like to mix it up) and i hope to get some inprov in that but idk how that gunna turn out. so i usually just jam around with so friends and improv once in a while for fun. so anyway what instrument do u like to improv with and what techniques or scales do u like to use. i personally like to use dimished scale alot and dimished arpegios. what about u?

I don't get a chance to improv much. Big bands= lots of people= less chance for rythm sectioners. I'll alter pieces, or improv/comp, but not much on the spot stuff. I'm taking lessons with this fantastic guy this summer which will hopefully help to do more of that...
Randomly: I heard about this awesome thing called "Switch band" where you learn another instrument without having to go through all the rudiments of notes and values and dynamics, like you would if you joined a beginning band or something. For people who are already musicians and just want to learn more. Friend of mine is now proficient on flute, trombone, trumpet, alto sax, and tuba. gonk

I'm required to improvise in all the songs my combo does : ) so any advice would really help guys.
Btw, there are songs with too many chords changes too frequent for me to try to play through. SO i just stick in key.
How bad is that? : (
Btw, how does this switch band thing work?

I have no idea how that switchband thing works O_o Advice on improv would be to work on reading changes. Sight reading changes is the key to good improvisiation which also involves having a good ear. If it's an old song listen to the original solo's and work from thier ideas.

i made flashcards with the 15 major 7th, dom 7th, and minor 7th chords
: ) I'm planning on having someone help me drill with those.
And my sax teacher showed me how to make a chord matrix, to drill myself
I can play the chords, I just need to learn the rest of each mode ><

There was going to be this improv class at this music store in my city, but I was away when it took place. :/ Yeah, I was pretty disappointed. Especially because I don't know the first thing about it, and REALLY want to learn. gonk My parents won't pay for lessons, either, which sucks.

along with my main band, I also play in a jazz quintet in which I am the piano player. Since the bassist rarely does anything interesting and the guitarist is, well, a metal guitarist with very little real jazz skill (he plays rhythm, and it all sounds like metal), I'm the only one that is ever given solos. I have a lot of practice with improvisation, as it's most of what I've done for the past 15 years on the piano.

What I suggest if you're having trouble with a song is to look through it and do a chord analysis. I used to do the same thing, stick to one key. What chord analysis will do is it will help you solidify the key changes and where the really important changes are (ex ii V I's and such) Oh, and I'm really a big fan of altered scales and augmented patterns. I use em' alot.
