Most children would be absolutely ecstatic to have another child over to play. Playdates were rare things, to be treasured and enjoyed, not dreaded. Unless, of course, the child on the receiving end of the visit was Kayce.
And Kayce was very unhappy about this whole thing.
"Why must I have a friend over?" she inquired as she followed her thankfully no-longer-pregnant mother into the kitchen. Dressed in her customary black stretchy pants and a dark blue shirt, Kayce was quite comfortable lounging around the house for the moment before preparing to climb a few trees later. All in a day's activities, really.
Amyla sighed and fished a piece of fruit out of the refrigerator, washing the apple beneath the faucet before tossing it at Tanith, who had been on the prowl for a snack. "No sweets," she said warningly to the redhead before turning back to Kayce. "Because you need friends, Kayce. You lock yourself away up there and never come out, and yes, I've invited you a friend over."
Kayce blinked and silently wandered out of the kitchen, headed for the front door to go sit out on the porch. Since when did she lose control of her own life?!

Nereida, it seemed, was finally considered old enough to take the ferry all by herself. So earlier that day, she had taken it and finally found her way to Kayce's house, where she was currently standing and debating between knocking and pressing the doorbell.
After the last week's events and Gage no longer speaking to her, it would be nice to finally be in contact with another female Fae who wouldn't think she was absolutely insane. Even if she had only spoken to Amyla about being invited over and not Kayce herself.
Ringing the doorbell would probably be more direct, she decided.

Kayce's hand had just closed around the inside doorknob when the doorbell trilled. She paused for a moment and blinked, staring at the door as if to see through it who was on the other side. It was another fae; of that she was sure. Amyla's demeanor told her that. But who...
As long as it isn't Dierdre! she thought fervently before flipping the deadbolt and opening up the door.
She was surprised to see Nereida on the other side and tilted her head to one side, her expression a tad bit pleased and a tad bit... confused. Well, maybe her mother did have some sense in her after all. "Hello."

"Hi!" Replied Nereida, smiling. Well then. Had Kayce even known she was coming over? Possibly not. "Can I come in?"
And then, feeling it needed to be said, "Did you know I was coming?"

Kayce blinked. "Yes. Come in," she said, stepping back and holding the door open for Nereida to come inside. "My mum told me someone was coming. She didn't tell me who."
And she was stupid to do that. I wouldn't have been mad if I knew it was Nereida. she tacked on silently, directing that thought toward her mother in the kitchen.

Nereida stepped inside and looked around. "This is the biggest house I've ever been in," she said. Then she shrugged it off like it was nothing.
"My mom's never done that. Mostly I just run around with..."
Gage.
She trailled off, remembering they currently weren't speaking.

Kayce had never known a smaller house (or another house), and thus had had nothing to compare her home to. "Mum inherited it from her parents. It was old and took her and Dad ages to fix up," she said.
The way the other fae trailed off told her that something was up. Run around with whom? she wondered before shrugging it off. Nereida would tell her if she wanted to. "Are you thirsty or anything?" she queried as she shut the front door behind the other fae and began leading the way out of the foyer.

Nereida nodded as she followed Kayce. She'd known that her remark would make the other girl suspicious, and the story would eventually come up.
Thirsty?
Come to think of it...
"Yes," she answered. "Could I have some water?"

"Sure," Kayce said. She was rather thirsty too, come to think of it. She beckoned at the other fae and padded across the edge of the family room, tactfully avoiding the mess of toy cars Erin had spread all over the floor. "Don't step on those. They hurt," she said with as much fervency as one in a nearly catatonic state can muster.
Amyla, having been too busy keeping Caleb from escaping his highchair, had not heard the doorbell ring and was thus surprised to see Nereida arrived already. "Oh, hello! Sorry I couldn't come greet you immediately. This guy has been a tad difficult, as usual," she said, managing to entice Caleb to stay with a very, very large cracker.
"That's my little brother Caleb," Kayce said, gesturing at the boy in the highchair, who was happily chewing his way through the cracker. She slipped two glasses out of one cabinet and walked to the water cooler, filling up both and offering one to Nereida. "He likes to chew stuff."

After successfully navigating the cars and puzzling over where on earth a little boy with tiger stripes and dragon wings would come from, Nereida accepted the glass of water.
"My sister likes to rewire the house," she shrugged, like it was some sort of compensation. "She's little, too."

Rewire a house? Well, that was interesting. Kayce had to smile a bit. "Yes, Caleb chews and breathes fire. Erin scratches in fights and makes messes with cars. Kari is telekinetic. Nieva can control water to a degree. Tanith doesn't have any special powers, but she has a cool pet cat-horse. Aryana doesn't do anything special," she said, wearily listing off her entire list of siblings. Did she forget one? She felt like it, for some odd reason.
Amyla chuckled. "Rewire the house? I'm sure your mother loves that!"
Kayce gestured in the general direction of the stairs. "Do you want to go up to my room, Nereida?" Yes. Let them escape the terrorizing presence of her mother before Amyla decided to intervene again. Parents were so evil sometimes.

Briefly, Nereida wondered how many siblings Kayce had. But then the invitation upstairs was extended and she accepted, glad to get away from the noise.
"Yeah, Darsais's a robot," she explained as they headed up the stairs. That was putting it quite bluntly, "So she's pretty good with machines. Apparently they all are. And she's friends with Dierdre."
This last comment was followed by a gagging noise.

Kayce nodded in agreement with the gag. "Dierdre is a self-absorbed idiotic twit," she said in her very precise manner. She led the way up the stairs and down the hallway, finally stopping at the very last door on the left. "This is mine. Mum promised I'd never have to share it," she said as she pushed the door open and entered.
The walls were fairly plain, a nice offwhite color with a similarly colored ceiling. On the ceiling, though, were upwards of a hundred and fifty glow-in-the-dark stars. Since it was daylight and the windows was open, they weren't glowing, though at night-
"It's a replica of the night sky. I use my telescope to see the constellations and then copy them onto my ceiling with the stars," she said, striding inside the room.

Nereida, who still insisted on sleeping in the bathtub and hadn't quite gotten around to decorating her room, was in awe. Sleeping in here had to be just like sleeping outside under the stars!
"I bet it looks amazing at night!" She enthused. But then, returning to the previous conversation, agreed. "I know what you mean about Dierdre."
And then it just slipped out.
"Have you met her brother?"

"It does," Kayce said in quiet response, gazing up at a few of the constellations. It made her happy, seeing all of the stars.
She looked a bit bewildered at the question for a moment. Brother? Dierdre had- oh! "Yes, I think so," she said, walking over to sit on her bed. It was nice and big and plushie. It made her happy.
