I apologise about the thread title... Too much Foamy the Squirrel, me thinks. xd
Anyway. Someone here on Gaia recently had a question for me about meditation - but I realise meditation isn't my forte. >_< So, I thought I'd get your guys thoughts. whee
Okay... He says he meditates a heck of a lot better in total darkness - no candles, lights, anything. However, at the same time it just freaks him out. Any ideas as to combat the fear? xD I think the reason he works best in darkness, is because there's no distractions.
If it's any help, his strong point is the element air.
Thanks in advance...

I think the deeper you get into your meditation the less you will think about it or whatever. I usually relax, reassure myself that there's nothing there... You know that feeling you get when something's there? I don't mean the one where you think theres something there because you're paranoid... But how you know theres something or especially someone there (day or night) whether you can hear them or not.. like a wierd 6th sense thing pretty much everyone gets to varying degrees... Well You can sort of... Like... try to see if something's there using that sort of thing... for reassurance, kind of thing. I donno... It's like you can tell theres nothing in the room to cause you harm, and no other people or anything. Deeper meditation would mean less worry, but I understand that when you're creeped out, meditation gets harder...
Hope I wasn't just rambling on about nothing...

Does he meditate with his eyes open, or shut? If open, maybe the distractions will be lesser with them shut...
If it would be worth trying, he could try elemental meditation? If there's a breeze (not gale force winds, or anything, mind), sit outside, and just relax, and let go, and 'become' part of the wind.
Does he meditate within a circle? Having protection could help combat the fear- and you could using non-distracting representations of the elements- ie. no candles.
EDIT: Reading Vaughan's post, I'm reminded- when I can 'feel' something there in the darkness, or something like that, I visualise a tight, white ball of light in front of me in the darkness. The energy builds, and it gets tighter, and stronger, and tighter- and suddenly it explodes, and pierces through- destroys and shatters the darkness. Maybe this will help?

A nightlight! Omigawsh, seriously. Nightlights are my best friend. I'm scared of the dark too.
It'll still be dark, but just enough that it's not freaky. I don't suggest one that gives off a colored light, like some. Just a regular, 'ol, plain white light one is fine.
Course I like colored ones, but I can't meditate worth a darn anyway.

You should try... It's a good habit to get into... And the more you do it the easier it comes and the deeper you get it. I used to meditate in a way whenI was reeeally little... once a week for a year or two (with my karate class back then redface ) and then I didn't try again after quitting until... sometime this year? Donno. Sucked when I came back to it though.

I used to be able to get in a trance-like state fairly easily, but never meditation. I can't even get into a trance nowadays, and it's really frustrating.

At some stage I was able to start meditating, stop, look at the clock thinking I hadn't actually managed to... But then I would realise I must hame beditated... because it was like an hour later... I never meditate anymore...

forgive me but i think we are over analysing things. perhaps a simple stick of lavender incense to attune him to psychic awareness might help him relax?
