Mteule was by the lake side. Kiva had taken the cubs out to explore a bit, giving Mteule and Matifu the day to prepare for the festival. The fruit had been gathered, everyone had their duties-- all that was left was the small speech that he, Kauta, and Mteuli had to each respectively give.
The priest and consort settled onto his haunches, his mane hanging about his eyes as the humidity seemed to be particularly heavy today.
~I need something to end my segment with... it's Kauta's place to announce and introduce the new members, and Mteuli never has a problem opening, he's got Tana's and Kif's return to run with.~

Kauta slept in much later than usual this morning, something she did very rarely and was almost upset at herself for doing so today, of all days -- the festival was tonight! She should be helping!
She didn't have the chance to get up completely, though, before she felt something shift inside her. Literally. She ended up sinking back to the ground, feeling dizzy, and instead of trying to stand again, she rested her head on her paws and closed her eyes, trying to make whatever it was that had made her feel ill go away. For the first time in months, she was frightened again. The dreams of the plague and of the stench of death that had haunted her in her childhood felt real again, and for a moment she wondered if the plague was back.
The shifting came again, gentler this time, and she realized with a start what was going on.
She was pregnant.
Oh geez. She didn't bother getting up slowly, she was up like a rocket and it was a good thing that she wasn't dizzy this time because she would likely have run smack into a tree or something. Mteule. He'd be by Kiva's shrine somewhere; Kauta was almost sure of it.

Mteule took a lap of water for a moment, but paused with his head bowed down still as he heard the sound of someone running towards him, too fast for her scent to preceed her in this heavy air, for sure. He lifted his head and turned in time to see Kauta running straight for him, and his eyes widened, suddenly feeling a touch of fear. Was she in danger?!
"Kauta??"
There was a certain and noticeable rise in pitch of alarm in his voice, and the male turned to face her, prepared to get between her and whatever demon might be chasing his mate.

Kauta couldn't help it anymore; she was so relieved and excited all at once that she broke into a wide grin, barely missing tackling Mteule to the ground. She did have enough sense to realize that she probably shouldn't be rough-housing for a while.
She did briefly grab hold of one of his ears though, not even realizing that she must have scared the living daylights out of him what with her rushing at him at top speed.
"I think you may have gotten your wish, Mteule," she purred, rubbing up against him.

Mteule was definitely confused when Kauta began to grin despite the pace of her run. He took an instinctive step or two back to avoid a collision, and blinked down his nose at her, until she was on his side instead and tugging one of his ears past the dangly fur of his mane. He instinctively allowed her to tug at it, inclining his head some to the side even as he said--
"Eh. My... wish? Kauta... I'm afraid you've lost me somewhere along the way...."

"To inform the pride at the gathering tonight that..." here she circled him once, finally seating herself at his other side. "...There will soon be heirs to continue the royal bloodline."

There came that giggle again, the same one she'd given the night Zuko had taken shelter within the Unity Walker pride. "Yes. I'm sure."

Mteule did something very un-Mteule like.
Mteule got up, stepped back, and lowered his head to eye level with her stomach, marveling and stupified by the concept of cubs-- his cubs-- THEIR cubs, growing inside of her. Well of course they'd be her cubs no matter what, or they wouldn't be growing inside of her now would they? But they'd created life?? Their first litter? How many would there be? How many new lives had taken seed inside of her? He was going to be a father!?
That right there seemed to smack him out of it, and into another level of surprise. Mteule lifted his head again suddenly and looked her in the eye, his own excited, and growing more so.
"I'm going to be a father? We're really going to be parents? Kauta, this is WONDERFUL, absoutely amazing news!!"

Kauta held still except for a steady purr and the rise and fall of her midsection in time to her breathing, a smile plastered on her face simply by watching Mteule. When he seemed to snap out of whatever was going on in his head, she reared up a bit on her hind legs and placed her forepaws on Mteule's back, effectively knocking him over. She smirked, and curled up beside him, a paw draped over him as if to claim him. In fact, that was exactly what she was doing.
"You're mine," she murmured just above her own purr. "And I love you."

The male squawked a little as he was up ended onto his side, blinking to look at his mate and queen in surprise just before he understood. His face flushed under his fur, and his heart warmed. With her curled up beside him like this, with the news, with those words, oh man, he felt such a swelling of pride!
His tongue left his maw to lick her cheek tenderly, a forepaw circling around her back.
"You're mine too, and I love you, queen of my heart..." His smile grew a bit larger, warmer, and more subdued, his eyes half-lidding with contentment. "... and mother of my children."
((WAH WAH WAAAAH. *tomatoes Mteule for being cheesy* XD))

"If Matifu and Theluji's brood is any example, then I believe we'll soon have more unified blood to set the pace for the next generations to come... I'm sure they'll have their mother's eyes." Rumbled the smooth reply as he took to grooming her shoulder as well.
