DDB It was early morning, the coolness of night still lingering in the air before the sunshine of day heated it. A time when most reptiles needed to rest and warm up before becoming active. But this wasn't your usual reptile... this one had an advantage over his fellows. Well a few really, what with the heat manipulation and the arms. And early morning was a time he liked to get things done.
Sid had decided today he was going to go to the shop. He'd grown not too long ago and so far no one beside his imediate family knew. Not even his best friends. Was it because he was afraid to tell them? Acia he knew had grown, but he'd not seen any others (or if he had he'd forgotten). What would they think? He was still deciding on what he thought of it too.
So anyway, now was as good a time as any to find out. He pushed open the door and slithered in - grateful he still posessed his tail (legs were so.. fiddly). As he suspected, no one was here this early so he proceeded to climb up onto the desk and recheck his bag of emergency-adventure equipment.

Meepfur Early morning was a quiet time at Toby's house. Most of the critters were snoozing or maybe just waking up, and the vampires had gone to bed, so there wasn't a whole lot going on. All in all, it tended to be a very boring time. It was even worse than late afternoon, which was the quietest of all, because it tended to be mass naptime.
It was hard to be bored while you were sleeping, though, so early morning remained as the most boring part of the day. So, frustrated with the lack of any activity around the house, Toby wandered his way to the shop unescorted. Iden was out of the question, considering the hour, and Tori was still sleeping, so he'd left a note (although his handwriting still left something to be desired) and headed off.
It took a bit of strategic effort to get the door open once he was there, but soon enough he pushed his way into the shop and had a look around to see if anyone else was there. His friend up on the dresser was easy to miss.

DDB Sidney was just checking his bearing with his little compass when the sound of the shop door opening quickly caught his attention. He peered towards the doorway, leaning over the edge of the desk. Was that.... Toby! oh yes! He recognised him instantly (only a little surprised to see him appearing at this hour).
"Hey!!" He waved, forgetting about his bag for now. "Up here Toby!"

Meepfur Toby's head jerked up at the sound of a voice from above, and his floppy ears lifted forward. Hopping excitedly, he waved up. "Sid! Hey, Sid!"
...wait a minute, since when did Sid have hair? His face looked kinda different, too! It was hard to tell if he was bigger from all the way down here, but he probably was.
Even more excited than before, Toby started to clamber his way up the dresser, talking all the way. "Sid, you grew! You grew, didn't you? When did that happen? I haven't seen you in forever!"

DDB Sidney nodded, pleased that despite his growth he was still recognisable. He was still Sid! And it stirred a sort of pride in him now. Yes, he had grown... he was older now and could do more stuff! He could much more adult things - like visiting the shop by himself for one!
"Yess, I grew! Iss it really noticable? Well I ssupose sso with the hair and that. Look! More fingers too! It's eassiers to hold things now, and usse pens." He grinned and wiggled them at Toby as he climbed, flicking out his tongue a little in his excitement. That at least was still forked.
He waited until his companion had reached the top before turning around to show off. He had grown taller too. Well, longer maybe is the correct term. xd

Meepfur Once he'd scaled the dresser, the little dog got a much better look at Sid, looking him up and down as he turned.
"Yeah! It's the hair that really does it. Fingers? You got more fingers?" Toby peered at his friend's hands, just a little bit jealous. He wiggled his own wistfully. Toby himself had four, one short of normal.
"Everyone's growing! Willow grew, too, and now Carl's as big as I am."

"Yeah, it's ssso weird.." Sid confesses to his friend. "All floppy and with no control. I tie it back to keep it out of the way. How do you manage with it all over you?" Although the 'fur' looked alot more manageable than 'hair'. And in some cases, like Acia's, it was nicer to the touch than the stuff growing on his head.
"Oh and the fingerss... yep, they're more like Dee's now." He notices Toby looking over his own paw-like hands. "I only had three before, must be part of growing up?" He says to reassure him.
Sidney has to ponder on the names though. Willow.. had he met her? Or just heard about her? "Willow, she's a tiger yeah?" Carl though, he does recall, particularly after his growing adventure, and he looks somewhat concerned. "And that eagle iss as big as you now? Watch yoursself, birds are tricky. Esspecially oness like that. He might try and eat you like the one that got hold of me before I grew." He rubs his head with one hand at the memory of that headache-inducing incident.

Toby laughed. "I like my hair! Tori says it's dashing. I have to keep it back, too, though, 'cause it gets in my eyes if I don't and I can't see right. The rest of it's not bad, though," he explained, looking over his furred body. "Not long enough to be any trouble, y'know? Well, it can get kind of hot, and sometimes it's itchy, but mostly it's okay."
"Yeah, I guess they are." Toby gave his fingers one last wiggle before dropping his arm back to his side. "One more reason to grow up quick!" Like giving Willow someone else her own age to play with. Important things like that. And fingers.
"Yeah, she's a tiger. Real pretty and stripey, with long hair." He tipped his head then, curious. "I don't think Carl's big enough to eat me. I could whack 'im real good, though, if I wanted to." The dog patted the hilt of the wooden sword that hung at his waist. "But I know what you mean about birds, mom's got one that's real mean. I guess it's really kind of a gryphon, but it's still a sort of bird. It's what gave me my scars."
"But one got ahold of you? An eagle? Whoa."

"Dasshing?" Sidney tilted his head and considered it while he ran an hand experimentally through his new locks. Dashing was good.... Indy was certainly dashing as well as being brave and clever. Could that be why all the girls liked him? So hair made you dashing. Well that was interesting!
"Hmm? Oh well I don't get hot. Got a trick for that. But itchy? I don't want it getting itchy. Is there a way to stop that?" Although perhaps that only happened if you had fur all over? Hopefully. Itchiness was certainly not dashing.
He nods at Toby's description of Willow, trying to picture the other teen velvet. She sounded nice and tigers were supposed to be brave. Maybe she'd like to go on an adventure with him sometime? Oh and with Toby too!
"Well if Carl ever triess to eat you, give him a good whack. I wouldn't want my friendss getting eaten. And that gryphon gave you the scarss? Well you know what I'm talking about then! Urgh! Those ssharp beakss and talonss..." He gave a slight shiver down along his tail.
"Yeah one nearly got me good! But it was a kookaborough, not an eagle. It grabbed me when Dee and I were out camping. One minute we were in the national reserve, next minute - in the middle of the outback! And it sswooped down and picked me up, taking me to the top of a tree sso Dee couldn't reach." Sid made a 'swoop' motion with his arms, really getting into the story-telling of his adventure. "And then it banged me against the branch! Again and again. Dee thought I had passed out! But I knew what I was doing.... I waited till the lasst moment... just as it was trying to swallow me whole!...." He paused on the cliffhanger for effect.

"That's what Tori says, and she's a girl, so she must be right." Made perfect sense to Toby, anyway.
"Scratch it," he answered simply, and quite seriously, before elaborating, "Keep clean and brush it. Somebody has to help, though, 'cause I can't reach everywhere. It really sucked this spring, I was shedding all over the place!" His sister wasn't here to correct him for using his mother's language. "I had all this extra that'd been keepin' me warm, and it had to come out since I didn't need it anymore."
"A kooka-...umm, a what? What's that?" It was a question the dog soon forgot about, though, as Sid got into telling the story and he got into listening, imagining some great and terribly ugly creature trying to make off with his friend and beat him senseless and then eat him whole!
It was awesome (except for the whole happening-to-a-friend detail, but obviously Sid was still here, so it was okay!). He waited wide-eyed for the ending, his tail twitching behind him.

Sidney had to smirk to himself. Scratch the itch? Well that was probably obvious to someone used to hair and fur. But he would have to remember about the cleaning and the brushing. Fortunatly for him it was only in the one spot on top og his head so it was easy enough to reach by himself. He also wondered vaguely if hair shedded in the hotter months like fur? Well he would see.
"A kookaborough? Oh! It's this fat sort of bird with a long sharp beak." Sidney described, well aware his cliffhanger was still hanging. Heh heh. He held his arms out to show their size - quite big compared to a velvet. "Oh and they laugh at you too! Not very nice, at least not to snakes. It's what they prey on. Anyway..."
"There I was, my head starting to go down its throat. Dee was yelling from befow and I could feel its tongue on my head.. that's when I knew it was time to use my secret weapon! Quick as a flash, I heated up my scales - did you know I could do that? Well I'd been practicing and good thing too. If I didn't get hot enough in a few moments I would already be in its stomach. But I did it and in seconds I was scolding hot! Too hot to swallow for that kookaborough! So he let me go with a squawk and flew off, haha!" Sidney finished his tale by standing tall and triumphant.
"But that wasn't the only thing that happened..."

Toby's eyes widened a little more at Sid's demonstration of how big a kookaborough was, and he imagined them with an awful, screeching laugh. Like a harpy! Harpies were great nasty bird-things, weren't they? Close enough, anyway.
"I didn't know you could do that!" he said in awe, looking like he might just be a little jealous. "I can't do anything cool like that." His ears fell back a bit. "Willow can talk to ghosts, she said. I dunno, I don't trust them. Ghosts, I mean. They'll suck the life right out of you!"
Clearly, the curious and talkative little dog was hard to tell a story to clean through, because he was full of things to ask about it, or things it reminded him of. Toby could be easily distracted when it came to some things.
"You mean there's more?"

"Oh yeah, one of my firsst sskillsss. Dee told me I made a good sscarf." He shook his head, smiling a little. He certainly didn't mind the elevated position on Dee's shoulders but he was much more than a scarf!
He curled his tail around a little as he pondered Toby's comments. "Talking to ghostss? I've never seen a ghost, or heard one talk... hmm... musst be one of her sskillss... Do they really suck your life out? Oh but I'm ssure you have cool talents too! Didn't you fight off a cheetaur when you last grew? Well there you go! Not many can ssay they've done that, I bet!"
Since the preious bit was the really exciting part of his growing-adventure, the reptile wasn't worried about dragging out the rest. Not to mention he wanted to get through it without too many questions to break his story-telling stance. "Jusst a bit more. Only hypnotissing a croc sso Dee and I could get acrosss the river and out of the forest." He grinned. "And then we came out here in the sshop and I wass like thisss."

"A scarf, huh?" Toby chuckled at the picture that put into his head. Tori's favorite scarf had puffballs on the ends, and imagining a Sid complete with puffballs tickled the little dog's humor.
"Yep! That's what they do in Quest for Glory, suck the hero's life right out! 'Cept if he's got this Undead...Undead Ungle or something. Anyway, they can't hurt you then!" If the game was right about cheetaurs existing, then it only followed that it was right about everything else, too. At his friend's mention of his trial, Toby couldn't help but perk up. That had been something! "Maybe that's it. Maybe I'm a real good fighter! That's good, I think. I need to fight if I'm ever gonna be a real knight."
"A crocodile? Really? I've seen those on TV before, it musta been huuuge!"

Sidney eyed him a moment as he chuckled. "Oh well, it gave me a good view." He protested, and in truth he didn't mind doing little things like that for Dee. She did feed and house him after all, not mention love him. He shrugged and grinned.
"Quesst for Glory? Iss that a game? Oh and that Ungle? Soundss like some ssort of magic amulet! Yup, I've heard of them, they keep evil sspirits away, or control them. It dependss on the amulet." Sidney nodded wisely. Ancient treasures and magic amulets made sense to him. Why else would they be hidden in old booby-trapped temples?
"Oh yeah, the croc wass big enough to eat Dee. But I got to him first, heh heh, made a good bridge." The snake crossed his arms casually. "But I bet you could have taken him on too, just like that cheetaur. I don't know anyone else who's faught something like that before. And yup, knights need to know how to fight. Is that what you're training to be?"
