Right, this is a work in progress. I check for spelling occasionally and might forget to, so ignore errors. Comments welcome and yes, there will be more.
"What?" "Exactly what I said. A page came around to home today and told me that you were invited to the ball." The young, fairly handsome man closed his eyes in thought. "Loraya." "Who's that?" the young woman in front of him asked. She was like a mirror of the young man, only slightly older. "Someone I made a bet with," he replied. "Baron Korwt's daughter." The girl raised an eyebrow. "Ky, you know you shouldn't be making bets. What was the bet anyway?" Ky smiled. "A years supply of my masters potions over an invitation to the ball on her arm." "What was the bet over?" "Horse spot remover." The woman laughed. "That potion always works. Nicely done." He bowed. "Thank you Whique. Now, all I need is some clothes."
Ky groaned. "I don't like green." "But green likes you," Whique replied. "Trust me." "The problem is I don't." Whique pouted and tried to look hurt. "Ky sighed. "Fine, but no gold." She nodded. "Silver's better anyway."
Ky waited at the foot of the stairs into the castle hall, the magic lights reflecting off his new suit. A simple pair of bracelets graced his wrists and a matching circlet ringed his head, underneath his hair. He felt like a fool amongst royalty. Which was almost true. She stepped out of her carriage, her beautiful face framed by her golden hair. Her black dress clung to her like a second skin as she gracefully walked towards him, supremely confident. He bowed, she curtsied and she took his arm. "Nice of you to dress up," she murmured with her melodic voice.. "Nice of you to take a bet I knew I would win." She laughed, her laugh rippling over the gathering crowd.
As he reflected back on the night, he remembered everything about her. Her touch, her laugh and the way she used him as a convenient excuse to dodge suitors. If he thought about it too much, he might have come to the conclusion that she liked him. A lot.
Her father noticed something. "You didn't-" "No father," she sighed. He frowned. "He didn't try anything at all?" "Nothing." The frown deepened. "He sounds gay." Loraya stared at him for a moment before laughing. "Father, I can assure you that he isn't like that. He's very chivalrous." Her father said nothing. "He may not be a noble, but he is hard working. With or without your permission, I'm going to spend time with him." Her father sighed. "Very well daughter mine. Just make sure you aren't making a mistake." She smiled and hugged him. "Don't worry father, I know what I'm doing."
Ky closed the shop and walked down to the open-air tavern. It was something of a curiosity in town, because most were all inside. The tavern owner had decided that having an open front tavern would increase business. He was correct and a few others were starting to follow his example. Ky walked in, received and paid for a meal and sat out near the street. He ate slowly as to savour his break. His master was likely to be home within a day and he wanted to have enough energy to cope with the mans talkative nature. A person passed next to him and walked into the tavern. A moment later it came back out, holding a plate similarly loaded to Ky's and sat at his table. "Hello there Ky," Loraya said, a smile lining her lips. Ky stared at Loraya for a moment. "What are you doing here?" She shrugged. "Thought I'd get something to eat and saw you here, so I joined you." She forked a mouthful into her mouth and started chewing as if she hadn't a care in the world. "But, you're a Baron's daughter! You shouldn't be here!" She shrugged and swallowed. "I can go where I want. Remember the potion I wanted and how I came in person for it, not sending a servant?" He nodded and relaxed slightly. Even in simple clothes she shone. She seemed to have an aura around her at all times that enhanced her beauty. "Having fun staring?" she asked a minute later. Ky's head dropped and he blushed slightly. Loraya laughed again. "You're not very experienced around the ladies, are you?" He shook his head and took a small bite from his meal, trying not to look at Loraya. "Don't worry about yourself too much. It's flattering to have people looking at me. Happens when one's magic seems to radiate from one." He looked up sharply. "You're a sorceress?" he asked, wonder evident in his voice. She waved a hand dismissively. "Yeah. Apparently my mother was one too, so that's whom I get it from. It's nothing big." "Nothing big? It's one of the coolest things I can think of!" Loraya shrugged. "May be cool for you, but it's a drag for me." He looked confused. "How is it a drag?" "Well," she said patiently, "I seem to have gotten the magic that requires a little use each day, and hurts just as much. Most sorcerers can get away with no pain or not having to use it every day, but I get the joys of both." Ky winced. "What do you mean by pain?" "Every time I do something with magic that I can do with my hands, I get tired. If I heal someone, I take on the pain of what I heal. Whenever I use magic, I get sharp pains through whatever part of my body should be being used instead. If I'm supposed to be lighting a candle, my fingertips hurt. If I teleport, my feet and legs hurt. Then I get as tired as a normal person would doing such a thing, which isn't generally very much." It was at this point that Ky wished he could do something for her, but didn't voice that wish.

She followed him back to the potion shop and entered after him. She wasn't going to let this one walk away from her. She was changing her own fortunes and knew she was tempting fate. "Are you still an apprentice?" she asked, already knowing the answer. "Yes. My master will be returning today." She smiled and perched on the only stool in the shop, behind the counter. He disappeared into the back of the shop and into his master’s house. The front door opened and a wizened old man walked in. "Glad to see you didn't run off for your own business Ky," he said as he started towards the back. "I'm not Ky," Loraya replied, a smile etching her lips. The old man turned and faced her. "So I see. Where is he?" "Here master," Ky said as he came back from the house with another stool in hand. "This is Loraya. She's Baron Korwt's daughter. Loraya, this is Moynt, my master." Loraya nodded her head. "Pleasure." Moynt stared at her. "A sorceress too." He turned and patted Ky on the shoulder. "Take care of her." Ky blushed and Loraya laughed.
They walked quietly through the moonlight clearing not far from town, no more than a pace separating them. The moonlight flickered over her magical aura, making her glow slightly. Her movements entranced Ky. “Ky, there’s something that I would like to tell you.” Loraya turned on him and stood still. “I greatly appreciated you coming to the ball. I don’t think I could have stayed there for very long if you weren’t such a gentleman.” He scratched the back of his head. “It was nothing Loraya. I’ve never set foot in the castle hall and even though I didn’t know anyone there, it was still fun.” She smiled and stepped slightly closer. “Can I ask a favour Ky?” “Um, okay?” She stepped up to him and wrapped her arms around him. She rested her head on his shoulder. “Hold me for a moment.” Ky carefully and awkwardly wrapped his arms around her shoulders. “I’m going to use a little magic and I want you to hold me so I don’t fall.” “Okay Loraya. Just don’t hurt yourself.” She looked up at him. “It’s not going to hurt much. It’s going to be more joyful than not.” She closed her eyes and placed her forehead on his chest. The aura around her seemed to leap and dance and then start to settle over Ky. He felt a slight tingling run through his body for a moment and then stop. He felt slightly different, like he had more energy. Loraya cried out in pain and tears burst from her eyes. She clutched at Ky’s back, holding him as close as she could. Ky held her and supported her as her legs gave out. After a moment her grip relaxed a little and she looked up into his eyes. “I have given you a gift. Some of my magic.” His eyes widened a little. “I cannot accept that Loraya.” She shook her head. “I have given it whether you wanted it or not. It’s mine to use as I see fit and instead of wasting it, I give it to you.” He did the only thing he could think of. He kissed her.
The world seemed to spin for them both. Neither of them had ever felt the way they felt at that point and both of them knew that they would probably never feel that way again with anyone else. As they parted, silence folded over them, as if nature was waiting for something. “I love you,” Ky breathed into the silence. Fresh tears streamed down Loraya’s face. “I love you too.” Nature came back in full force with owls hooting and insects buzzing. A light wind picked up and caught at their clothes as they kissed again.
Ky awoke to the prodding’s of Moynt. “Wake up boy, you’ve got things you have to do today.” Moynt prodded Ky with his foot again. “You have to get moving soon if you’re going to get there in time and Whique is already waiting.” Ky rolled over. “Get where?” The old man sighed. “To the potions hall in Kiorth, remember?” It was then that Ky jumped out of bed, pulled on a fresh pair of trousers and started running around, packing a bag of essential things. Moynt laughed at Ky’s ramblings as he ran around, grabbing various things. “You’ll have to run the store by yourself. There’s currently more healing salve being boiled up downstairs, you’ll have to watch that. The green and blue stomach healing potions and the hair restorer will need bottling.” Ky came to a stop next to Moynt. “Can you please tell Loraya where I am?” Moynt laughed. “I’ll be sure to tell the young lady. Now, take Lightfoot and go. You’ll be late if you don’t leave soon.” The old man pressed a small bag into Ky’s hand. “Don’t say no to it, I’ll just drop it into your saddlebag if you do.” Ky nodded and pocketed the coins before running out and saddling the roan Clydesdale mare that Moynt owned. Lightfoot was a reliable mare who had been servicing Moynt for close to five years. She was pushing into her early teens and was still reliable for a long trek. Soon Ky was on his way out of the towns palisade walls and on the way to the city of Kiorth.
“Where is he going?!” “Kiorth, young miss. He’s going for his potion mastery.” Loraya sighed and sat down. “Just when I’d found him.” Moynt smiled grandfatherly. “Ah, young love.” Her head snapped up and her eyes bore into his. “And?” “Nothing,” he replied, innocently. “It’s perfectly natural.” Her posture slumped a little. “My father would never allow me to go that far on my own.” “Ky only has a few hours start on you young miss. You could catch up to him if you rode hard.” “I still need to talk to my father first.” “Then go.” She nodded and quietly left the shop without further word.

Her father defiantly noticed something this time. “He didn’t-“ “No father! He didn’t do anything besides kiss me and tell me he loves me.” “That’s what I was going to ask. I would have noticed if you’ve done anything else.” Loraya blushed and looked at the carpet. “What is it daughter mine?” She took a breath to steady her nerves. “Ky has gone to Kiorth to get his masters.” “Ah, and you wish to chase after him.” Loraya didn’t say anything. “Okay, I will let you go.” Her attention focussed on her father. “You are letting me go after him?” “Certainly. My father let me chase after my wife when I found out she was going to study how to use her magic.” “Without an escort?” “Without an escort.” She leapt into his arms and hugged the massive barrel of his chest. “Thank you father.” “It’s what I’m here for. Now, take Swift. She’ll be up to a long walk with a little sprint at the start.” Loraya nodded and bolted down the stair to the stable, passing her room and grabbing some clothes on her way.
Ky sighed. His thoughts were supposed to be fixed on remembering potions and how to make the desired effects, not on how sweet a certain young woman’s lips were. Whique riding next to him smacked him over the back of the head with the end of her halberd. “Stop daydreaming and focus on your potions.” Ky glared at Whique while rubbing the back of his head. “Just because you’re my sister doesn’t mean you get to hurt me whenever you want!” She shrugged in reply and lent back in the saddle. “What are the ingredients of a potion to remove freckles?” He sighed. “Sunweed, High-blue and salt water, depending.” “Depending on what?” “On if the person lives within a mile of the ocean. If they do, then you use fresh water instead of salt water.” “Good. Now how do you make a healing balm?”
Loraya would have sworn her pretty head off at the bandits if it were all right for her to swear.
Not too far out of town, she was waylaid by a group of four bandits. “I knew I packed my daggers for a reason,” she muttered to herself as two approached her. “Hello pretty one,” the lead bandit said. “We’ll have some fun with you before we kill you.” She shook her head, slightly amused at the bandit’s forthrightness. “You’ll not lay a hand on me for three reasons.” “Oh?” He smiled and elbowed his friend in amusement. “And what are those reasons?” “Firstly,” she said, pulling out her three daggers, “I have very sharp weapons.” The bandit laughed. “Well miss, I have three friends and you have three weapons. That’s four people to kill with three knives.” Loraya proceeded to pull out five more knives. “Fair enough. And your other two reasons?” Loraya levelled a glare at the bandit. “Secondly, I am Baron Korwt's daughter.” The bandit shrugged. “We know how to hide from soldiers. I’m not afraid of what might happen after I’ve had my way with you.” Loraya’s face distorted into a scowl. “Thirdly,” she almost whispered, “I am a sorceress.” This brought the man and his companion up short. The two bandits in the bushes at her side froze. “Well then, that’s a mighty fine claim to power there. Baron’s daughter and a sorceress.” He laughed a deep laugh. “We’ll see about that.” Loraya’s expression became blank and the daggers in her hand started to glow slightly red. “Uh boss. I think she is a sorceress.” “Don’t care, she’s still ours for the taking.” “Not likely,” Loraya said as she threw one of the daggers into the leader’s shoulder. His sword fell from his hand, the arm now useless. “She is a sorceress!” He pulled the dagger out with his good hand, threw it on the ground and ran away, forgetting his sword. The bandits ran as fast as they could away from the young woman on the horse. She bent over in the saddle and started crying lightly.

He heard a noise as the fire started to die down. It sounded like a horse neighing in the background. He poked his sister, making her alert as he picked up his own 'weapons'. A belt of potions and a dagger in its sheath were tied around his waist and he pulled a couple of more potions from his bag. She slunk around, her halberd down low, in the direction of where the noise had come from. He waited until he heard the horse again, but this time he also heard his sister coming back with it. "Ky! It's Loraya and she's injured." "I'm fine," she breathed, obviously not. Ky dumped the potions he held, picked up a small bag and ran to the horse, now much closer to the fire. He pulled out a small root and a couple of small bags. "What's wrong Loraya?" She sighed. "I used magic. I'm just very tired and sore." Ky handed her the root. "Chew on this. It will help you get your strength back." "Won't work, I'm a sorceress." "Will work, I've given it to a sorcerer before." Loraya sighed, having no strength to fight back any more, she took the root and started chewing on it. Whique gently lifted Loraya out of the saddle and lay her next to the fire. Ky crouched next to her and felt her forehead. "You're not hot," he muttered to himself. "I'm fine Ky," Loraya said as she reached up and touched his arm. "I'll be fine in the morning. It was excessive use of magic that got me and I'll be fine." Ky shook his head. "I wish I could believe you, but, I admit that I don't know much about sorcerers." "Then just let me sleep," she replied, placing her head on her arm and rolling onto her side. She spat the root out and fell asleep instantly. Ky looked at Whique. "Well?" "Let the woman sleep. You get some sleep, I'll stay watch now."
Ky woke to find the Loraya had gotten up in the night and had lain down next to him. She was curled up to his side and had pulled a blanket over them. As he shifted ever so slightly, she awoke and snuggled into his side a little. "Morning Ky," she muttered, half asleep. "Uh," he muttered, trying to get out from under the blanket without offending her. "Oh, it's okay. We're both clothed and nothing happened," she said, letting him get up. "Uh huh." Whique laughed at him. "I suggested that it would be warmer sharing the blanket with you Ky," she said with a mischievously grin on her face. "Whique!" "Oh shush and start making breakfast." She pointed to the pack mule with a pot hanging off the saddle. Ky sighed and moved to the pack mule, unpacking what was needed for breakfast.
"Loraya?" "Yes Kyran?" He paused uncertainly. "How did you find me?" She smiled slightly. "Your master pointed me in the right direction." "You know that I'm going for my masters?" She nodded as the horses walked on in silence, Whique riding ahead of the pair. Ky looked around. "And what about you and me?" "I don't know Ky. I really don't." He nodded and they fell into an uneasy silence, both knowing the implications of their positions.
They entered the large town just before sunset and rode to the potion brewers hall, where Ky's master had told him that he could find accommodation for himself and Whique. Ky was sure they could fit another in the guest quarters. They always could. Just before Ky bid the two women goodnight, he remembered about Loraya's magic. He invited her out for a walk around the small lake nearby. His invitation was reluctantly accepted.
"Why did you ask me here Ky?" "So you could have a little privacy." Tears welled in her eyes at his thoughtfulness. She stepped up to him and he folded his arms around her. She started to glow slightly before crying out and collapsing in his arms.
He practically carried her back to the guest quarters, where he walked her to her bed and gave her a small root to nibble on. She smiled faintly and fell asleep almost instantly, leaving the root alone. Whique laid a gentle hand on his shoulder. "You really care for her, don't you?" His only answer was to take a gentle hold of Loraya's hand.
Ky woke early and dressed himself in his formal robes. He tidied himself up and picked up his small bag of potions before leaving the small room and heading towards the testing room. A couple of other young men and women, similar in age to him were walking with him. "Here for your masters?" one asked. He replied with a nod. "Good luck then." The man nodded and jogged to catch up with someone, a woman who looked like a warrior. He thought about Whique and smiled faintly. Oddly enough, he wasn't nervous at all. There was nothing riding on his success or failure and he was finding that he could recall everything that he had learnt with no problems. He wasn't shaking, sweating or anything. He was, in one word, normal. A person emerged from the shadows next to him and wrapped her arms around his waist. Ky almost tripped over from shock, and the fact that he caught his foot inside hers. He turned and hugged Loraya back. "Do well for me, okay?" she asked. He nodded and squeezed slightly before releasing her. She clung for another half a second, but let him go.
The small group of young potion brewers sat uneasily in a semi-circle, facing a wizened potions master. He fired off rapid questions to each person and a couple of people in the background took notes. One person fumbled it from the outset, another not long after and a third on the fifth question. Ky, a young man and a young woman were all that were left after everyone had been asked ten questions. And the questions were getting harder. The young man was starting to sweat under the pressure, but the young woman and Ky seemed to be enjoying themselves. "Ky, Lionsbane, Tigers tongue and Panthers spots are all linked by one thing. What?" Ky almost laughed out loud. Trick question. "They all have large cats in their names. Nothing else." "Explain." "Lionsbane, as it sounds, is a cat repellent and a flavouring that helps with an upset stomach. Tigers tongue helps to cure mouth sores and the juice of Panthers spots helps with rashes on the feet. Therefore, the only thing they have in common is their names." The old man gave him a nod and a minuscule smile. The young woman glanced at him as if sizing him up. "Eleanor, list the locations, colours and sizes of the three flowers just asked of Ky." Ky almost swore under his breath, but then remembered that none of the factors actually matched. The woman addressed as Eleanor listed all the details, accurately, and Ky knew that his previous answer was right. He glanced at the woman and nodded. "Maytn, what is the only plant that's sap will kill you, its bark can increase healing and it's scent will bring people back from the brink of death?" The sweating young man sweated harder. Ky knew and it was a very obscure plant. Maytn said a plant and the old man shook his head. Maytn sighed and sat back silently. No one who failed a question had been allowed to leave. In effect, they were being taught what they didn't know. "Eleanor, answer the question." She did. She even went on to list its only known locations and extra details. The old man nodded and glanced around at the other young people who had failed. They were all staring at Eleanor in wonder. Ky had to admit to himself that she was beautiful, but her mind was what was catching his attention. "Ky, name the plant and it's call name, that's sap when watered down and added to Lionsbane will help to cure and cleanse the heart when drunk, at the expense of sharp pain for a second." His breath caught. This was not a question he wanted to answer. The answer scared him. "Sorcerer's Heart or Lorayanam." Loraya, his thoughts echoed as his heart throbbed. He couldn't see her, but he knew she was nearby.
"Take a break," the old man said. "Come back at the next bell." A bell started to toll in the distance, signalling the hour. "Okay, come back at the next bell." A few of the people in the room smiled, but Ky was distracted. He rushed out of the hall to find Loraya and Whique waiting for him. Whique smiled at him. "You did well Ky-" "Your name," Ky interrupted her, talking to Loraya. "Did you know?" Loraya only nodded in reply. He brushed his fingers through his hair. "My father thought it would be appropriate," Loraya said, breaking the silence. "After all, I am a sorceress. One who seems to cause pain in peoples hearts." Her voice had gained a little tremor and tears had sprung into her eyes. Ky, not knowing what to do or say, just stood there. Loraya walked away from him, heading towards the guest quarters. Whique glared at him as he sat on the steps of the hall.
A hand held a small plate of meat dripping in gravy in front of Ky. He looked up into the smiling face of Eleanor, who sat next to him and placed the plate on his lap. "Eat. We have to identify potions and their contents next, then we have to make a few ourselves." Ky picked up the small wooden fork and gingerly nibbled at a piece of meat. Eleanor ate with a little less dignity and somehow managed to catch every single drop of gravy on her plate instead of her robes. As Ky was eating his seventh bite, she was drinking the gravy off the plate and sighing contently. "What's got you down Ky?" She asked after he had finished that bite. He shook his head, trying to dissuade her questionings. "Not happening Ky. Mind if I call you Ky? I want to know what's wrong. The Lorayanam question seemed to dampen your enthusiasm." He sighed. "I know someone. Her name is Loraya. She is a sorceress." "Okay, and?" "She took my question the wrong way, I think." "And your question was?" "Did she know." Eleanor shrugged. "Her reply?" "Her father thought it was appropriate." The young woman stared at him. She could tell that was not the whole answer. "She said, 'After all, I am a sorceress. One who seems to cause pain in peoples hearts.'" Eleanor winced. "Oh dear. Well, what I can suggest, is that you take a bunch of flowers, go to her, and say what Lorayanam does besides causing sharp pain for a second. She seemed to forget that part."

A cauldron of green, bubbling liquid stood in the middle of the hall as the apprentices walked in. A set of five chalk lines had been drawn around it, progressively larger. The potions master stood at the edge of the outer-most circle and signalled for the students to line up at it. "This next exercise is designed to tell me how quickly you can identify something. What's in the cauldron?" "A green viscous substance," Eleanor said. "Correct. Step to the next line. Who's next?" "A substance that boils without the presence of fire," Ky said. The man looked at him, glanced at the cauldron and smiled. "Correct, step forward. Next?" No one else volunteered information. The man shook his head and signalled for the other students to take a seat nearby with the observers. Ky couldn't see Loraya or Whique in the audience. "Eleanor, define one main ingredient." Glancing over her shoulder at the master before looking back at the cauldron, she stared intently at the substance. Giving off a small laugh, she said, "Cabbage." "Correct, step forward." Ky stared at the cauldron and finally saw what Eleanor had. There were small bits of vegetable matter floating in and around the mixture. "Ky, define another main ingredient." Staring at the cauldron himself, he noticed a smell waft past his nose. At first he thought it was from outside, but then he put it together and smiled faintly. "Salt." Eleanor turned and stared at him as the master announced that he was correct. "How the hell did you get that?" Ky just tapped the side of his nose. "Given what you know, what are the four most likely potions to be made from this current substance? Eleanor, list two." "Stomach ease for sea-sickness and a healing balm for sunburn." "Correct. Step forward. Ky?" Thinking for a moment, he replied easily. After all, he'd managed to win a bet with one of them. "A joint easer and horse spot remover." "Indeed. Step forward." The master strode forward and held a root out over the cauldron. "Identify this root Ky." Staring at the plant, Ky answered easily. "Larksbreath." The man dropped in into the cauldron. "Correct, step forward. Eleanor, what is in the cauldron now?" The young woman stared at the master dumbfounded. Closing her eyes for a moment, she tried thinking of all the possible things it could be. "May I ask a question master?" "Go ahead." "Literally what's in the cauldron or what is the name of the combined ingredients?" The man smiled. "Answer as you see fit." Taking a breath, she fired off her answer. "Water, salt, cabbage, root of larksbreath, seaweed and a heating stone." Ky turned and stared at the young woman. She had her eyes closed and fingers crossed. If he was to be honest with himself, he was as stumped as she was. "Correct, step forward." Eleanor let out her breath and stepped up to the last line, less than a foot from the cauldron. The master produced a pair of small cups, dipped them in the mixture and handed them to the students. "Drink and identify three ingredients not previously listed. Each." The students sipped at the steaming mixture and mulled over their answers. "Firebane," Ky said before Eleanor had opened her mouth to speak. "And Graan pollen." Nodding, Eleanor added, "Yanthea bark, January berries and Myraw extract." "Excellent. Ky, what's the final unidentified ingredient. Think hard." Closing his eyes and taking another sip, he let the mixture cool in his mouth before swallowing and answering. "Korwt petals." "Correct."
