The wind was whispering softly in the willows, telling stories of creatures long since dead, wars fought and lost, and winters that turned blood to ice. It said all this, and more, to those who would think to listen. Those like Ran.

Of course Ran couldn’t understand the wind, no one could, except for maybe the Shamans. She’d like to believe they were just a mite bit insane, and overdosed on smoke. The substance could serve as a hallucinogenic, which brought forth questions of the spirit world. Yet her questions, and her problems, were whisked away with this very wind. So she took her time and enjoyed simply feeling its soft caress as it ventured past her.

The brightly colored mare, with equally bright spirits, stood poised at the edge of a marsh. Thick matts of tree hair hung down to the ground, dipping toyedly into the water. For a moment Rain had considered stepping in, letting the cool waters overtake her, but she had reconsidered. The moon would be coming forth soon, replacing the fading sun, and warmth would be far. Even the pleasantries of a dip were not tempting enough to override the cold feeling that came after such an adventure.

Letting a soft sigh escape her lips she tore her eyes from the sight, the sun’s dying rays flashing vibrant orange on the placid waters. For many it would seem as though she stood near solid ground. The silver liquid was so thickly covered by leaves, reeds, and the shelter of trees that it could hardly be discerned against the landscape; but Rain had traveled these parts well. She knew the marsh, as well as the dangers it enjoyed concealing beneath its entrapping beauty.

A faint smile hinted at the edge of her muzzle as she edged slowly away from the death trap. The wind picked up as if to drag her back forwards, but it was no match for the well defined legs of the running equus. At last she deemed it safe to pick up the pace, leaving the danger behind her.

Lonatos trotted quietly around the marsh with his son Shilah, he was in deep thought and didn't even notice the mare in the marsh. He looked back at his son making sure he was close to him and not straggling behind.

As he looked back he saw Shilah playing with the soft marsh ground with his hoof. He shook his head and laughed. "You silly boy." He said as he smiled at his son.

Shilah looked up at his father then his eyes curiously looked around the marsh. He saw something off alittle bit in the distance and he looked at it trying to see it better.

Shilah then turned to his dad. "Dad, what is that over there?" He said curious, gesturing in the direction of the mare.

Lonatos looked at his son again then looked over at what he was gesturing at. He looked carefully then looked back at Shilah. "That over there, I belive is another soquili." He said and smiled at Shilah, that boy was curious about everything.

It took Rain little time to notice the other which had adventured into the marshlands. Such a dangerous place for one so very young, but, she assumed, the father was there to protect him. A smile hinted at her lips. Though she couldn't be said to love children, she didn't despise them as some did. She supposed that when she one day carried foals of her own she may have that warmth towards their souls that most mares felt even now. Until then she could appreciate them for their youth, but in no means took pleasure in their company.

It seemed they noticed her as quickly as she had picked them from the moss. They stood to gaze at her for a moment, and Rain considered venturing over for a word. It couldn't hurt, Little Creek was off fishing, so it seemed a good enough idea. Shrugging to no one in particular, she turned her direction slight east, towards the two intquisitive equines.

"Good evening," she called forwards when she was within their hearing range. Her footsteps slowed, and came to a stop a good distance from them, not wanting to alarm the 'father'. Soquili could be very protective of their kind.

Lonatos decided it would be okay for them to go over and talk to the other soquili. He turn to Shilah. "Let's go over and say hello, you stay close to me though." He didn't want Shilah to get stuck in the marsh. Lonatos headed towards the mare with Shilah trailing behind. "Hello there." He said to the mare when he was close enough.

Shilah looked at his father as he stood behind him, then his eyes moved to the mare. He was not used to meeting other soquili, since the only soquili he knew were his family.
