I Still Mean It

“Guess he’s being done in love with you, Botan,” Yusuke remarked, watching Kuwabara run enthusiastically up the mountain trail, screaming “YUKINA!” at the top of his lungs.

“Darn,” replied Botan casually, nodding in agreement. And she had meant it, truly, sincerely meant it, though Yusuke would have no way of knowing that.

But she knew, at that moment, that any hope she had left of being with him was gone. Dead. Like his brief love for her.

-:-

She had admired him from the first time she laid eyes on him. Admired him for sticking to his principles and honor code, all for his friend Okubo. Admired him for being so determined to beat Yusuke in a fair fight even when the odds were against him, and not faltering to challenge him again even when he was already badly beaten up. Admired him for hiding a kitten-loving heart behind his I’m-a-total-punk façade, and managing to stay true to both sides at the same time.

She watched him the entire time, invisible to his eye.

And she continued to do so, even when she could be seen.

There came that wave of awe as she saw him determined to fight Byakko to the end alone (since she had been knocking out parasite-infested humans with a metal bat at the time, Koenma had allowed her access to the Reikai recordings). And she saw that amazing sense of genius that lay dormant inside him, though it was ready to wake at the first sign of danger.

He had been so interested in her at the start—that she was sure of. But she had no chance of competing with Yukina, because she knew that he would not give up on her.

Yet she continued to watch him develop. She might not have been as supportive as Yukina sometimes during the Ankoku Bujuutsukai, but she still rooted for him loyally. And she, too, could have burst into tears when Toguro “killed” him.

She was so incredibly relieved when he survived.

And so she continued to observe him patiently, never saying a word. After all, there was no hope left for her.

Darn. The word floated in her mind for a moment as she drifted lazily on her oar, contemplating the scene below her. A cry of “YUKINA!” drifted up to her, a slight p***k (just the slightest; how could she be jealous of her friend?) of envy…and then she realized…after all this time, she still meant it.

Darn indeed.
