Ever since the... incident, Newt had stayed to his duplex, hiding from the dangers that lay seemingly everywhere outside. His own timid nature combined with the skiddishness of the frog with the added horror of what he had seen had left him afraid to even look out a window, lest Annie be waiting outside for him. He knew he had to go eventually, though. It only took a couple days of being a recluse befor the urge to get some decent excersize took over- his legs had been cramping and stiff.

He kept to the main, well traveled paths, his swimtrunks on under his jumper as he headed for a nice hop along the beach and possibly a splash. He'd be safe along the water- frogs could certainly outswim a wolf- at least he hoped.

Zach was in the long process of learning a lesson - movies greatly exaggerated how easy it was to survive on an island. After finding it tedious to have to go back and forth to the river every time he needed a drink, he decided he needed cups. One day of going to the river could last him a long time. It had taken hime a while to determine what sort of material he'd make cups out of. He couldn't make them out of rocks or wood. Leaves he didn't trust not to leak. But in a burst of inspiration he realized that there was something on the island that didn't even have to be shaped into a cup - coconuts!

And there he was, digging his claws into a coconut palm on the beach and throttling it, as he had been for the past fifteen minutes. The coconuts remained defiantly among the palm fronds despite his efforts. He was starting to wear out, though. Between the bug bites, the extreme temperatures, and the soreness of sleeping on rock for many days, he hadn't realized that his sporadic meals were barely keeping him going, leaving him drained after just shaking up a palm tree.

Finally, he let go, panting and moving his tail weakly. Not a single coconut for his efforts. His right hand was all scratched up now, to match his shoulder. It was amazing he hadn't caught some sort of deadly jungle disease yet. He glanced around warily. No sign of that wolf girl... yet.

Newt was having a fairly good time thus far. He had stripped down to his shorts, splashing along the waves. The salt water was uncomfortable when he was in it for too long- it hurt his amphibious skin, but a little bit was fun and refreshing. He could always have a nice soak in the lake on his way back if he could brave it. He had really started to get the hang of his hopping, especially on the nice soft sand of the beach that could pad his landings- he made a game of seeing how far he could leap, sometimes taking a hopping start. His legs might not have been completely froggish yet, but they certainly had more of a spring to them than human legs! He didn't even notice the dragon untill he was almost on top of him, his jumping game leading him across the hot sand away from the water. Once he looked up from his jumping, he gave a cry of alarm at the sight of the reddened lizard and he stumbled, tumbling along the sand to land sprawled on his back with his soft, cream-colored froggish belly in the air. "D-duh-duh-don't eat me!"

"What the-!" Zach turned around at the sound of a shout, and was met with the sight of a very green something leaping at him. As a human, he had little idea what to do but run away. Instead, his muscles seemed to freeze, and from some shadowy and changed part of his brain he was inclined to hiss, fanning his frill and wings and trying to look as large as he could. If he looked larger, then he'd be intimidating. It seemed to make perfect sense. He didn't stop until the green man's words pierced through the routine. His expression went from blank to puzzled, before retracing the source of the voice. It was an islander sprawled in the sand. He stood poised, caught between helping them up and running off toward the faraway end of the beach.

"What? Why would I eat you?" he asked, looking dazed. He peered at the green islander from above, unsure of what sort of animal he was. Hopefully not a predator.

Newt lowered his speckled arms from his face, his throat inflating in a fright-inspired croak, his knees pulled up to his sides, "Ah- krrrKIT! y-you ah..." His inner frog was shreiking, SNAKE SNAKE! every inch of Zach screamed preditor to the little frog man and he cowered, trying in his own weak way to make himself look big via throat.

It was hard to remember what he looked like with his snout, even though he was constantly reminded of his presence. He felt along it a moment, trying to remember what his reflection had looked like when he'd last changed. He'd been so out of it at the time that the memory eluded him. Given this man's reaction, he assumed it was more frightening than he realized.

The sight of the expanding throat made him jump backward. He had no idea what the guy was doing, but suddenly he didn't want to be close. In a flurry of sand he was a good two and a half feet away, tail curled. He was going to take no chances. A finger was jabbed in the direction of Newt's throat, accompanied by a terse question. "What are you doing?"

"KrrKIT!" Newt croaked again and swallowed, webbed hands clamping around his throat to try to keep it still, "I... I'm suh-sorry- it's juh-just... ah... a re-re-re-rrruh-reaction! I ah..." It could speak! It was an islander? The frog-man twisted to crouch again, feeling exceptionally froggish with his brear speckle and striped back out in the sun.

"Don't be sssorry..." The green guy probably couldn't help it, whatever 'it' was. The distance made him feel a little safer from this green, bulging, bug-eyed human, but he couldn't turn his back on the jungle completely. With a slight shift he could see the greenery out of the corner of his eye. There was one dead islander, he didn't want to be the second. His head was starting to hurt, a headache right behind the eyes Zach craned his neck forward slightly, eased by the fact that it was somewhat longer than a normal neck. "Uh, if you don't mind me asssking, what are you becoming?" His head was starting to hurt, a headache right behind the eyes, forcing him to close his eyes for a few seconds.

"Ah... er..." Newt had htought it was rather obvious, what with his large webbed feet and all. This strange creature on the other hand... "I... I cuh-could ask th-the same of y-you!"

He didn't press further on the issue, assuming that the green guy didn't even know himself. Whatever this other man was, he wasn't able to put two and two together and guess. Many sleepless or nearly sleepless nights had his thought process slowed down to practically a standstill.

He smiled apologetically, the sharp tips of his teeth poking out from between his strangely stretched lips. "Trussst me, you don't want to asssk."

Newt cowered further, giving another nervious croak, "D-d-duh-does it eat fruh-fruh-frogs?" If there was something wrong with the dragon man, Newt didn't notice, trembling too badly in his own fear.

"I... I guesss ssso." Not that he'd eaten one yet, just that it sounded as plausible as the bugs. What was he again? Snake, lizards, bat, panther... something else... he couldn't even remember the list well right now. The point was, it was too many animals. Dragon? Simpler. Shorter. To the point. While it hadn't been especially convincing the first time he'd changed, he looked much more like it now, whether or not he really wanted to.

"But not people!" He made a dismissive gesture with his hand. Now that was a blatant lie. He wasn't sure if he could still count on his fingers the number of times he'd put others into danger between his changes. Even lately, he'd been eyeing the few people he'd met lately as a next meal, even if he didn't follow through. Something suddenly clicked with what the green guy said. He moved forward to lean against the palm tree. "Ssso you're becoming a frog?"

Newt gave a frightened cry at the affirmation of eating frogs, not waiting for his second statement befor he lept to cower behind a palm. "Ah- ah... y-yes?" He gulped, "I... I buh-buh-believe so!"
PostPosted: Sat Sep 16, 2006 12:33 pm

He started to lean a little more heavily on the trunk of the palm. He couldn't help but tense when he saw the sudden movement. The near-strangling by the snake days ago had left him fearful of the next attempt on his life. The frog was green, though, not yellow and black, he reminded himself. He followed the frog-man's movements with his eyes, itching to bare his teeth. "I guesss I wasssn't thinking. Now that you sssay it, you do look kind of like one..."

Newt gave another cry, cringing back behind the tree again, trying his hardest to hide without running away- the red monster would most certainly be able to out run him! "I cuh-cuh-can't help that!" He wailed in terror.
