Let's face it - this film was not as bad a depiction of the pre-war Geisha world as I had originally been led to believe, but I still had a big problem with the hairstyles. I did not see one hairstyle in the entire film that was ever worn by any geisha or maiko, at any time, anywhere. The one exception was Pumpkin, but on closer look, her hair was wrong, too. Did this bother anyone else besides me? Because it sure as heck bothered me!

I agree. The hairstyles are not historically accurate at all, but the movie is very touching all the same.

Now that you mention it, It does bother me.. I never really noticed it at first but your right none of those styles were ever worn by actual Geisha, And Maiko.

It bothered me a small amount but they did say in the extras on the DVD that these were not the true hairstyles of a Geisha and that they never had them in such a way. It also says in the DVD extras that the necklines on the Kimono were slightly lower, to make them look more modern. The movie was probably not so eye catching without these hairstyles and things or so they thought. I didn't mind, I liked seeing it through the eyes of the director because I've done enough research on my own.

Of course it was a good movie, I'm not disputing that - but I've been in love with geisha & maiko most of my life, and so I am always aware of such things. I just think they could have given more care to the authenticity rather than just have a bunch of Hollywood geisha.

Yes I must agree with you they should have made the hairstyles more alike to the actual ones wore by Geisha's today so you have a very good point.
