I have decided to become a vegetarian. This idea actually came to me out of nowhere. The thing is, I have always been fairly close with my parents, and they seem to have a hard time accepting my desicion. They asked me to wait until my next doctor's appointment, so that i can talk to him about the health issues, etc. What I was wondering is, how did any of you veggies out there get your parents to accept it, and do I need to know anything about vegetarianism?

I'm not a vegetarian - I just don't eat red meats and other things. It's mostly a taste issue.
You just have to find a way to get the nutrients, proteins, and the like from the things you used to eat from other sources, is all. It's like a big, balancing, nutrition act. (:

Bloodlusting_desires Is it unhealthy to be a vegetarian? Thats like asking "Is it truly unhealthyto be an omnivore?", it all depends on the person. If you're a vegitarian living solely off twinkies and french fries then thats not good, yet if you eat a diverse, healthful, and well-balanced diet then it can be very healthy! 3nodding I would be vegan, but I'm reluctant oto give up my Ben&Jerry's, and my parents couldn't afford for me to go vegan either.

Theyd have to get into other sources of protein like nuts and seeds.

as for parents accepting it, when I turned veggie I offered to help make the switch. I went with them grocery-shopping and showed them what to pick out that would go along with my new lifestyle and be healthy. I started a job and actually paid for my own food for a while (veggie-burgers and the like) so that they wouldn't have to pay for my personal choice. I made a list of restaurants around my house that offered vegetarian meals, so that my parents would have an easier time figuring out where to get take-out from or where to go when we went out for dinner. I think the biggest factor for them accepting it was that I didn't do it all at once. I slowly phased out meats by first giving up beef, then pork, and so on. Now it's just a normal part of our family dynamic.

My mom has actually been a vegetarian. So it my mom was totally ok with it. As for how to deal with a parent wishing against your desicion, all I have to say is to stick it out. You believe you wanna be a vegetarian so thenm do it! Perhaps refuse to eat meat! Pick all of the meat out of your meals prepared and chuck that soggy, bloody, chewy stuff into that compost (or trash)! Not saying you should be super rebellious, but you gotta...
GET UP, STAND UP! STAND UP FOR YOUR RIGHT! GET UP, STAND UP! DON'T GIVE UP THE FIGHT!
Go for it sister! Respect for the animal bretheren! EAT THOSE VEGGIES!

They just did. I had not been eating meat for a long time and then they asked me: "Are you a vegetarian, dear?" And I simple replied: "yes". And then we bought a dozen of vegetarian books filled up with recipes.
I've been a vegetarian for 6 months now.

Any diet can be healthy as long as it's balanced... thing is, humans are designed to consume plant and animal matter, so to compensate for the lack of animal protein in your diet I would recommend developing a balanced diet with a nutritionist. As a chef, I've cooked for a large number of vegetarians/vegans, and I could offer you some creative yet healthy recipes for dishes where the meat would not be missed. I'm an omnivore myself, I've gone hungry too many times to turn my nose up at any type of food. To be able to pick and choose what you want to eat is a luxury, keep that in mind, and please, whatever you do, respect the diets of other people. 3nodding After all, many have no say in the food they can get, whether it's availability or financial concerns.
Oh, and caesar dressing is made with anchovies usually, never seen sardines in it and I know at least 20 different recipes. wink xd Still fish, though.
