Ok, I'm a fourth year member, my last year, and I'm the captain. I'm having a problem with one of my freshman girls...
Here's a little about her...
She started on trumpet and quit in a week...(two years ago) She moved to pit percussion quit after 4 days two practices (last year)
Now she's in colorguard... she skipped bandcamp... hasn't been to a single practice this year... tomorrow makes our 12th practice this year not including band camp. We've learned the routines for all four songs and we're finishing the drill for the fourth song tomorrow... she knows NOTHING. She hasn't shown up. In class, she half-asses the routines and it pisses me off. She only wants in for the uniform. She doesn't care that we have to relearn drill around her hole. She doesn't care about anyone but herself... she asked me 4 different times to stay after school and help her. I said I would (pushing all my plans aside to come home and study for my upcoming ACT) ... she ran to her bus every time.
I've talked to the band director and she says "Let's try and see if her mom can do anything about it."
Her hole is obvious and we go to compitition in October. I don't know what to say to her and I have no power to kick her off the team.
what should I do? (sorry this was long)

i think you should bring it up with your director or drum majors and see if they can talk to her. or just beat her to the bus and make her practice smile we are getting a new girl thats coming to our practice tomorrow and i'm staying after the normal band practice to catch her up. i really hope she comes lol

Ew..what a sitation.
My advice would be to..yeah, tell a DM or your director unanimously.
I would die if I missed a single practice....and I'm a Freshman as well.

wait... she actually came to two practices... she learned the whole 3rd song >< it's ticking me off... I've tried talking to the director (the DM can't make any descisions either) the director just gives her chance after chance... if it were any other freshman, they'd have been kicked out a while back.... and especially if they've been in the band two previous years before and dropped out after such a short time... the director is just so set on keeping that whole filled gonk

Seeing as your guard is a class (lucky crying ) why doesn't she fail-out of it? When I took spanish in 8th grade (not the same, I know) I was kicked out after failing for two semesters. Does your school have a simillar pollicy? How are you graded in guard? Does she realise she may fail the class? Who teaches your class? Do they realise she's a lost cause and should not be allowed to continue? Can you not give her the uniform because she doesen't march? Will I ever stop asking questions? xd
this is a tough situation...best of luck!wooooooooooooo yeaaaaaaah

The rule in our guard is skip two practices in a week adn you can't perofrm the next show.
...Is marching band considered a class? I sure as heck hope she's not getting credit for not showing up. Really, she shouldn't be on guard. SHe has not put forth any effort in it and she shouldn't be allowed to perofrm until she knows the drill and routine like the back of her hand.
I'd say try bringing it up with your director again, but if your director is anything like mine, nothing will happen, so I definitely know how you feel.

Well, if she wants to go on the field and look stupid because she does not know anything, I say let her. Of course you can't really do that for compition, since points will be docked......

learn all of the things you need to and when you have a concert/parade the let her fall on her butt and look like the moron she is and ignore her in the prosess .
we had a girl like that before and durring our first concert of the season she didnt know anything so she ran off stage and then my guard captian got a call the next day, she quit then blamed it on the band and tried to keep and the stuff(unifrom and flag)but my guard captian came over to her house and got it all . the funny thing is nobody and heard or seen her in the last two years. after that i noticed that the band was a much happier group of people!
