It might just be my city, but all the people I've talked ot at the various highschools have that one overdone play. You know the one, every teacher loves it, students can ace any exam on it cause they know the answer. That play.

And that play seems to change from class to class. Now generally it stays in the drama department, but not for our class at our school. No, for this graduating class (my class) our 'That Play' is taking over every aspect of school.

That play is 'The Glass Menagerie'.

A few years ago in english (or french, can't remember) we had to read and analyse a play out of this book of plays. I chose The Glass Menagerie cause a) look who wrote it zomg and b) I'd heard lots about it. So I read and analyse it. The next year what do we go see in our drama class but The Glass menagerie. Next, I have to act out a scene from The Glass Menagerie.

And then nothing last year. So I thought I was free. Not to be had my darling dears. No, this year in english we start the Great Gatsby. Excitement. Then we stop after the first chapter and read/write an essay about the play 'The Matchmaker'. We finish that and I think we're going back to our novel. Nope, today our substitute told us we were reading and analysing another play. Low and behold it's the one and only, ever stalking me, The Glass Menagerie.

Sorry for the rant but have you ever had that one play that just stalked you through school? Or anywhere else for that matter?

In my experience, The Music Man's been really overdone. It was put on by three different high schools AND the local players in the span of two years. We all know it's a Broadway staple, but it's not so amazing that I want to see it 4 different times. Let's do some planning, friends.

and A Christmas Carol is an overdone play.

ya...lots of christmas plays are very overdone. My city theatre groups are pretty good about picking plays that aren't too badly overdone. My highschool's pretty good about it too...though other highschools in teh city aren't. And neither are the elementary schools...Oklahoma, The Music Man...those ones. It's in language classes that the overdoness comes up. I swear you just analyse the same plays over and over again.

Well, overall I would have to say Grease, Oklahoma, Annie, Music Man, Guys and Dolls. But in my experience, the most OVERDONE play in MY area is only ONE play...

Footloose
Footloose
FOOTLOOSE!

GAH! If ONE more school does Footloose, I might scream. Oh wait a minute, ALL the local schools have done Footloose already!

It seems like we did it at our dinner theatre and then the next year everyone started to do it. And when I got to college I mentioned it and found out that of the 15 people in the major at the time, more then half of them had done it at their high schools as well. It's sickening at this point.

Our school couldn't do Les Mis because it was starting to be overdone. Too bad, too, 'cause we could probably have pulled it off pretty well last year.

Blech. Anything by Arthur Miller. The Crucible. All My Sons. DEATH OF A GODDAMN SALESMAN. I am so sick of Arthur Miller.

And my school is doing Grease right now. For the third time. (granted, we haven't done it in five years, but still.)

But that's okay, since we usualyl do crazy unheard of plays. Radium Girls. Metamorphoses (not unheard of, but hard to do, thanks to the pool of water.) Mariner. Lucky Stiff. Utter fawesomeness. But a lot of school like to copy us after the fact, so there are four schools within an hour of PESH doing Meta right now. But whatever. We pwn them.

|You have just been punjabbed|

Fiddler on the Roof stalked me for an entire year. And now I'm being stalked by Annie.

My dad was getting fed up last year because every day I watched Footloose at twice a day (I heart HBO)

Last year Phantom haunted my whole school. The advanced drama classes sang its songs in the musical theatre unit, the dance department had a dance to a remix of one of the songs, and the band played the music. It was freaky how they all jumped on it at once.

hmmm

WICKED...
CHICAGO...

The most overdone shows in musical theatre...damn teacher isn't open to ANYTHING. She hates most shows and every year she adds something with Chicago or WICKED...she ******** sucks...and what sucks is...she never does a whole musical. It's always friggin variety shows. It's musical theatre damn it..you just don't have a number in the show and then skip to another musical. It's tacky.

Last year was all about FOOTLOOSE.
This year is all about MIDSUMMER NIGHTS DREAM.
The year before last was about GREASE.
Thats what its like up here.

Around here its Joseph, and Annie. Every christmas the director did Annie, and every summer she did Joseph. I love Annie, but if you're expecting to make any money in the community theater, you can't do the same show every year. Generally its the same group of people who come to the shows, so doing the same show, its just like a rerun. People change the channel. Joseph is not my favorite, but why do we have to do it every year..lol..
