I hate how non-martial artists view martial-ats so stereotypical!!!! All ypou hear is HIYAAAAA!!! WOOOOOO YAH!!!! and silly hand movements, it really bugs me because they don't know what they are talking about. They watch a couple of bruce-lee or karate kid movies (rest in peace mr miyagi) and suddenly they know martial-arts! The actors do that for the fans and to make it more interesting...why take it literally! You know what I mean??????

Yes, not every style you have to go AHhhh and Ahyi when you punch or kick. But some times it could throw your opponent off lol.

I get asked about it every now and then so I try to explane it. I hated it when I did Tae Kwon Do I do Wing Chun now much quieter I don't like the Kiap or Kiai how ever you want to call it. Some styles use it some don't I would use it some times to scare people I have freaked out people wile screwing around it can realy stun someone during a fight and it can help push air out of your lungs so if you are it hit you wont gasp for air. I don't feel it gives me any burst of power but thats just me.

i heard from my teacher that yelling during nanquan forms for example makes your punches 30% stronger. I think thats kinda kool because your exherting all your force by yelling, but im not sure if thats true lol....
Ya....i feel that non-martial artists can be a bit annoying at times and do all this stereotypical nonesense......i just ignore them cuz i know they dont know any better lol. I also feel that sumtimes non-martial artists can be a bit critical on ppl who practice martial arts....either your good or u suck lol...but i definintly dont agree w/ that sweatdrop

It is true, a kiai is meant to improve your punches and such if done properly. But many non-martial artists hear the word and actually shout KIAI!!! Which is just the name not the word we shout, I don't actually shout a word, kiai sound vary i've experimented with a few and AAAAAAAAAAPE comes out best...looks weird in writing though. Short and sharp is best for me. When I was little I shouted something like WAP!!! Like I said, it's hard to put your personal kiai into letters. But I like the idea that everyone's is different. Like your personal force comming out!

I was taught to kiai as well, mostly during basic move exercises. For example, we would have to yell it everytime we threw a punch or kick. I think it has some use in terms of causing your opponent to be distracted, but personally I wouldn't use it for every single move because then that just makes you a person that yells all the time.

If people think it's strange I will tell you something the military makes you shout Kill when you are doing combat training this is the same idea. When I get realy pised I growl sounds dumb but I have made dogs wimper and made people walk away during fights. I have gone into berserker rages befor and realy freaked people out. I have anger problems me and my dad both must be genetic. My front door wouldent open I sholder ramed it and busted the door. I kicked a hole in the wall once and at school in 4th grade I fliped out and threw a desk across the room. I have learned to control it better but if I get realy mad I just can't hold my self back.

Martial-arts help you? I would assume it did, with self-control and discipline.

Martial-arts help you? I would assume it did, with self-control and discipline. No I was a violent dangerous kid growing up I would jump into fights that had nothing to do with me I loved it. I have self control but I hate holding my self back when someone pisses me off it angers me more to hold back my anger. I have respect for others as long as they don't disrespect me I don't look for fights I will normaly walk away but I can't stand people who wont let things be they talk s**t when you walk away. I had a guy start some crap one day walking home from school I was walking and behind me down the street there were two guys walking home the other way I heard them cuss so I looked that way to see what was up. Nothing was going on I thought they were just talking so I turnd and started walking again this happened twice the second time I turned back and I heard "You best keep walking" I droped my bag and turned around I yelled out I willl kill you mother ******** I was mad as hell. I didn't know these punks and I just fliped out they ran away which just made me mader. I hate people who start crap and I hate cowards who talk big but never do any thing. I get pumped up and once that happens I just want to rip something apart I try not to tair up my house but I feel like throwing things and just destroying every thing. My dad is the same way he came home once pissed off about work and threw a chair across the room I have seen him slam thing around when he gets frustraited berserk is the only word that I can use to describe the way we get when mad. It can be scary at times and it's one reason I was called psycho when I was in school. My dad has never hit me or my mother in any way my mom did leave him about 4 years ago and I moved in with her because I felt me and my dad would go at it and destroy our house.

Yea..stereotypes are annoying. It is said that noises while you do a move help you execute it the way it's supposed to be. I'm sometimes still a bit scared to scream "sik!" or "dik!" or "yuet!" while I do my moves at a performance or something because people will either 1. Make a joke out of it or 2. Have a great laugh...

Yes I find it offensive. People that have no knowledge of Martial Arts don't know anything about the culture, history, hard work.......I don't think it's right for people to make the lame sound effects and stuff. It seems like they are mocking us.
