The Autumn mists curled around the port of Cephei. Grey tendrils wrapping themselves round houses and ships in the growing darkness. Most respectable Shu were tucked safe in bed, dreaming sweetly.

Outside only the obscure and dangerous lurked in the shadows. Relishing the cover of mist, smugglers, pirates and thieves went about their illegal business.

In the shadows Mecca waited, his coat pulled tight around him though it was not cold. There was something not right about this evening, something dark and claustrophobic. Clutching a new item for his shop in his hands he leant back against the cold stone wall and continued to wait.

As Covet had blossomed into a young adult, she had gained many admirers and regulars at Matador's vibrant bar 'Veronica'. She would court their fancies innocently, and though many had tried to win her affections with random assortments of gifts, she had always refused, never one to give false hopes. But with the advent of her growth into maturity, Covet had learned that her allure over the other shu priveleged her to these gifts. And not all of them were silly trinkets either.

Walking through the mist filled streets of Cephei, her footsteps were muted against the cobblestones, the night around her seeming to press in on her. Keeping her ears open for any unusual sounds, she remained ever on the alert. Though many mistook her for one, she was no fool. Walking with a purpose, she was on her way Taliesin to bring Mecca her latest acquisition. But rounding a corner, her eyes fell on his familiar crimson skin and features. His blood red hair shining in the dull light of the streets, she approaced him silently.

"Shouldn't you be in bed?" she asked at his elbow, arching a purple brow.

Mecca turned his eyes away from the silent docks and towards the purple Shu. With his age Mecca had grown an elegance that had been slightly lacking in his youth. As well as an ability to keep his more ... distructive urges under wraps in casual situations.

"Not when there is work to be done." He said flatly, stepping away from the wall and turning his eyes back to the dark sea. "Does the night seem strange to you?" He asked placing his hands in his pocket and scanning the black shadows of the boats.

Covet followed his eyes to the docks and then looked around, an unsettled feeling creeping through her. Hugging her pale, striped arms around herself, she glanced around. It was almost as if the city were dead and they were the only two souls left within its streets.

"Yes," she replied, turning her vibrant green eyes back up to him. "There is something unsettling about this fog," she said, looking away to watch the mist curl its way around the houses and shops along the docks. It was not unusual to see fog roll in off the sea, but this one had an ominous flavor to it. As if it were trying to hide something from the rest of the Shu world.

it took a lot to unsettle Mecca, he was from Sagres, the city of Tomes, where necromancers lurked around every corner. However, something really was not right.

Sighing he watched as a set of lights appeared in the air. An air ship and one he recognised. He had travelled on the Circe all those years back, when he had left Cephei a child.

An emotionless smile crossed his face as he watched it glide closer to them.

"So, do you have anything of interest?" He asked her, getting back to business. He was rather impressed with her head for aquiring valuble objects. "Those other items sold rather well."

ceedabear
"Do you honestly think that I would be here, rather than my warm bed if I didn't have anything of interest?" she smirked and shifted the scarf she kept tied at her waist. Producing a small black satin pouch, she stepped closer to her childhood tormentor and held the pouch up to him.

"Runes cut into an unusual stone that I do not recognize. The fool thought that I would be able to appreciate the 'pretty stones'. In which I suppose was not entirely wrong," she smirked, tilting her head to the side as she looked at the pouch. "He honestly did not realize what it was he was holding."

midnight_medea
Mecca shot her a loaded smirk and took the runes from her hand to inspect them.
"I could make use of these myself." He said turning the cold rounds in his hand and holding them up to the dim light. "How much do you want fot them?" He asked slipping them into his pocket and looking up as the Circe pulled into one of the floating, air docks.
"How would you like a tour of a real air ship?" He asked turning to look at her. "Not a poor excuse like the last one I showed you."

ceedabear
Covet had half been listening to him. Her eyes were trained on the lights of the ship that was slowly docking. His offer, drew her eyes back to him and a cold knot of fear twisted in her stomach. Heights terrified her and her mind equated air ships to the ultimate of heights, even when they were safely docked close to the ground. But showing fear meant showing weakness and she kept her expression blank as she looked back out to the ship.

"I suppose if you put it that way, how could I refuse? But don't think that this will be payment for those runes. You'll be owing me a little extra for this," she said, casting him a slightly loaded smirk.

The journey was long an exhausting, but such was life of a pirate. Having carted her long time friend, Matador, back to Crescent City, the beloved Captain of the Hurricane Baroness, Saltee Dawg was looking for a means of unwinding. Her ship was chased back into the port by a tempest, so she gave the crew a day off. Even on her days off, Saltee preferred to wander the docks. However, today she found herself near the airship docks instead of the water vessel docks. Her heeled boots clicked on the metal gratings, and though the wind whipped her platinum blonde hair, without the n** of the salt, its caress felt empty.

Drifting along the boardwalk, Saltee found herself behind a younger couple. Her ears perked at their conversation. A tour of an airship? What better way to spend her afternoon than researching and exploring the competition. Who knew? She could attempt to break into the air pirate territory if she became desperate.

"What's this about a tour?" Saltee said to the young red shu, examining her nails and eyeing up one of the ships. "Do you work here or something?"

midnight_medea
Mecca returned Covet's smirk and was about to speak as an unwelcome intruder interrupted their conversation.
"No?" he said shortly casting her a brief glance. "I was merely offering to take my associate here to see a ship I once sailed on. A rather magnificent beast." He said looking up at the strangely quiet ship with his cold smile.

Covet's ear flickered back at the sound of a familiar voice. How could she mistake the sea hardened, brusque manner of the female captain of the Hurricane Baroness. She smirked as her voice seemed to resound off the muffling mist that surrounded the trio. She supposed it was the years of shouting over the wind and the waves that allowed her to permeate the suffocating silence that tainted the night air. Turning slightly, she gave Saltee one of her pretty smiles.

"Saltee, how fortunate that we cross paths again so soon," she smiled at the sea pirate.

kaleidoscopegrl
"I see." Saltee said, eyeing the red boy suspiciously. This was precisely why she disliked and distrusted men, they always seemed to be preoccupied with one thing alone, themselves. "Covet, nice to see you again. Are you sure I can't convince you to work on my crew."

After being chased back to port by a storm, she wondered if the young couple knew the dangers of traveling in such weather. Giving her shoulders a shrug, she took off her hat, letting her black streaks tumble down over the pale blonde. "You seem in better spirits than the last time I saw you."

"You know each other?" Mecca asked looking between the captain and Covet, only mildly interested. The rest of his attention was firmly on the Circe. Though it had docked there did not appear to be any action or movement on board. The mist now enveloping it increased his unease.

"Theres's something not right." He said starting to walk towards the steps that lead up to the air dock.

ceedabear
Covet upped her smile to a brilliant one at the captain's comment.
"I'm terribly sorry Saltee, but you know my heart belongs to Veronica," she smiled and glanced up at Mecca. At Saltee's next comment, she smirked lightly and turned her green eyes back to the captain.

"Very true. Things have been righted and wrongs explained and forgiven," she said with another sly glance towards Mecca. She noticed immediately that he was paying them no heed even though he asked them a question. She turned back to the docks as he started to walk away and glanced back to Saltee. She had spent enough time wandering the docks that even she knew that something was not quite right.

"Mecca... wait," she called out, her voice muted by the increasing thickness of the mist. She started after him and gave Saltee a worried glance over her shoulder.

kaleidoscopegrl
"Fair enough," Saltee said with a shrug. It bothered her that such turnarounds could be made so quickly. Perhaps the young girl was more naive than she originally thought. "Are you all sure about going on that?"

She disliked the glint in the red one's eyes, but something seemed to draw him. Her protective instinct and thrill for adventure drove her after Covet and her cohort.

Mecca barely heard Covet's voice as he walked up the steps towards the dock. He could feel it all around him, like ice seeping right through his skin. Remembering Covet hated hights he held out his hand to offer her support and looked over his shoulder at their new companion.

"Do things seem strange to you Captain?" He asked as he looked down at the mist thickening below them. "This mist, it seems unnatural. Have you seen anything like it?"

ceedabear
Covet swallowed as she started up the tall steps and smiled weakly as Mecca paused long enough to offer her his hand. Slipping her hand into his, she gathered her skirts up in her free hand in order to climb the steps unhindered. She wanted to look back at Saltee to watch her expression as she answered Mecca, but she knew it would be a mistake and kept her eyes forward, trying her best not to close them. Instead, she turned her ears back so she could hear the captain's answer clearly.

kaleidoscopegrl
"I'm not one to go walking into mysterious, thick fog. Unless I have a pretty damn good reason to," Saltee said, bringing up the rear. "I'm taking it wasn't like this the last time your rode her?"

Saltee hoped that Mecca would figure out that she was speaking of the airship and not the beautiful young woman clutching onto his hand for dear life. Not one to be unprepared, Saltee slipped a dagger out of her thigh sheath; a close ranged weapon would be the only one beneficial in the bizarre haze. The last thing she needed was a bullet ricocheting or a taking a chunk out of some poor sap with her cutlass.

"Something's not right," Saltee said, sniffing the air. "It smells too dank for a newer vessel. Something's rotting."

Mecca shook his head.
"No," he said as they stepped up onto the floating dock. He noted that Saltee had drawn her dagger and put himself on his guard. As a druid he carried no weapons other than the spells he had learned to cast.

He sniffed the air and nodded. It did smell as though it was rotting. Though everything looked as good as new.
"We should look. In case there is trouble." He said thinking of the people he spent at least a year living with as he traveled the world.

Covet took a deep breath as they arrived at the dock that brought them level to the deck. Still holding tightly to Mecca's hand, she tried to peer through the thick mist. Shivering slightly, she ruffled her feathers and shifted her wings uneasily as she stepped a little closer to Mecca. She looked to Saltee and noted the dagger in her hand and could feel her own dagger tucked safely at her waist beneath the scarf from which she had produced the bag of runes just moments earlier.

"Do you think it's wise? Maybe we should get the dockmaster?" she suggested softly, fear closing her throat.

kaleidoscopegrl
"No time for that, Covet," Saltee said, acknowledging the other taking up their guards. "Not that I like this idea either, but if people are in trouble it might be too late if we leave and try to find someone."

It was times like this that Saltee wished she actually partied with her crew instead of being a recluse. Comparing the uncomfortable tension to a boisterous barfight, Saltee decided she'd rather take her chances in a bar fight. At least she'd be able to see what was going on. Leaning forward onto her toes, the hide soles of her boots didn't click on the metal like the heels. Pulling her wings in close, she spoke in a soft voice.

"If you've got weapons, now would be the time to ready them."

Mecca nodded and pulled a casting stone from his pocket, taking the initiative and stepping onto the boat he helped Covet over and waited for Saltee. Everything seemed to be in order. The lights were all on, the sails taut.
Mecca stretched his wings in the unease and stepped towards the captain's cabin. Knocking firmly on the door.

ceedabear
Covet took Mecca's help in stepping over the unnerving gap between the dock and the ship. Once both feet were safely on the deck, she slipped her hand beneath the scarf to produce her own dagger, uncertain if she would be able to get her voice to work properly. If she were going to fight, she would prefer seeing her foe and the mist was thick enough to put them at a serious disadvantage if anyone or thing happened to be lurking nearby. The knock on the door caused Covet to jump, the sudden noise sounding overly loud in the deafening silence.

"There doesn't seem to be anything wrong. Wouldn't there be signs of struggle or something?" she asked, looking around the limited view of the deck, the lanterns casting an oddly warm and soft glow.

kaleidoscopegrl
"Not of it was an ambush," Saltee said, turning her back to Covet and walking in reverse. She'd be doing a disservice to the group if they were attacked from behind. "With this mist, they may not have seen it coming."

Saltee had too many close shaves for her liking to take such a suspicious and unsettling situation lightly. Knowing where the other two were, she drew out her cutlass. She didn't want to use it, but a dagger wouldn't do a damn if something much heavier was used against them. The resonation of the knock sent a chill down her spine. It sounded like one of the tombs her and her mates raided near the Path of Ghosts. Half of them didn't make it out alive, and she prayed their chances this time around would be better.

"Back's covered, Mecca," Saltee said in a raspy whisper. "Open it."

midnight_medea
Mecca nodded again, letting go of Covet's warm hand briefly to open the door with both hands. He let it swing open, searching the cabin with his senses before stepping over the threshold.
"This is odd." He said walking around the cabin. The candles still burned and a half eated plate of dinner sat on the desk. It looked as though it had just been cooked. No rotting and steam still rose from the meat.
"Captain Gangplank?" He asked. His voice low and wary. Silence greeted his enquirey.

ceedabear
Covet glanced between Saltee and Mecca and waited for him to speak before she moved from where she stood. At his comment, she followed him into the cabin, stopping just inside the door. Her eyes swept over the odd scene.

"Maybe... there was a problem down below... and he had to go down," she said, already seeing the huge gaping holes in the small hope. Even if the captain had been called away to attend to a problem, there should have been at least the firstmate overseeing the docking of the ship.

"How... did she dock without anyone guiding her?" she asked, turning to Saltee.

kaleidoscopegrl
"Can't say. I'm an old fashioned nautical boater, Covie," Saltee said, refusing to turn around and acknowledge the scene. She disliked the odds, didn't find the scene too promising. Recalling the size of the ships and how long she watched them, even with auto-navigation, it would be ridiculously impossible to dock such a thing with little or no crew.

"The smell isn't coming from in here," Saltee said, covering her nose and mouth with her sleeve and gloved hand. "The wind is carrying back from the front of the ship."

midnight_medea
"I agree." He said looking to Saltee and then back to Covet. "There's some dark magic at the head of this somewhere."

The smell of the dead was just another smell to him, being on the path to becoming a necromancer it was all part of the job. Taking a breath he looked around and pulled a kerchief from his jacket pocket.
"Use this if it gets to much." He said blankly to Covet, stepping back towards the door.
"Then we go to the bow." He said nodding to Saltee. "Though I am not sure we will like what we find."

ceedabear
Covet took the handkerchief and held it tightly. Swallowing hard again, she followed Mecca back out into the heavy night. Sticking close to Saltee, she knew that Mecca would be able to handle himself and probably better without her clinging too closely to him.

As they neared the bow, the heavy sickly sweet stench of rot assaulted her nose, and she quickly covered both her mouth and nose with Mecca's kerchief, though it was doing little good.
