A friend of mine brought up an interesting point to me. What if Adell wasn't immune to the effects of the curse for being special? What if he was really just a demon? Because it doesn't say the masked man and woman are or are not demons or mutated-humans.

No, Adell assumes he is human. What if he really is a demon? It would explain why the curse has no effect on him and how his parents got so close to the (fake) Zenon.

Disgaea 2 makes a number of hints that Adell is a Demon. Like when you beat Etna in Chapter 3 Adell is awarded the title "Demon Lord" and Rozy asks Adell "How can a Human become a Demon Lord? Are you sure you are a human?"
Also when you beat the Prism Rangers in Chapter 6 he mentions that his "Demon Detecter" is telling him that Adell is a Demon.
Also I'm told Adell has pointy ears under that mop of hair he's got but I'm not sure if that's true or not.
