My favourite right now is the "Black", "Red" and "White" Trilogy by Ted Dekker. Anyone else read those?

Any suggestions for other great reads?

I have lots of suggestions for good reads.

Unfortunately, none of them are explicitely Christian.

Unless of course Oscar Wilde counts as being Catholic.

I'd love to have your suggestions, whether they're obviously christian or not. I love reading.

Yay!

Give me a few minutes. I'll list some of my favourites and include brief summaries.

Doctor Faustus by Thomas Mann: Basically a modernisation of the original Faust legend, in which a talented pianist sells his soul to gain unparalleled musical talent. It's written like a biography of an actual person (which it's not; it's totally fictional) which makes it a very interesting read.

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde: Another version of the Faust story, though this one is slightly more tweaked. Dorian Gray, a very beautiful young man, gets his portrait painting. After having his eyes opened to all that he can get with his beauty by a friend, he makes a wish that his portrait will age instead of his actual body. His wish comes true, and Dorian is corrupted by sensual pleasure and his own beauty. If I had to pick a favourite book, this would be it.

Dracula by Bram Stoker: I don't think this one needs a summary. Vampire gone wild. But, if you've never read the book, you should. Because it's reallyreally well-written, told through letters and diary entries.

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley: Continuing with the gothic theme, I'm not sure this one needs a summary either. Victor Frankenstein is a young medical student who creates a monster from the parts of dead bodies. Even though it's a famous story, the actual novel is very different from how it has been portrayed. It raises a lot of great ethical questions, too. I think they make you read it in some schools, though, so you may have already read it.

The Holy Terrors by Jean Cocteau: Very, very strange book about a brother and sister and two of their friends. It concentrates on the relationships between the four characters as they form a very odd love quadralateral, of sorts. It's hard to describe, but it's excellent.

I have tons more, but I'll stop for now. Haha. Letting me see this thread was a bad idea. Now I'll never shut up.

That's alright. Being a book junkie is better than sitting on the couch in front of the TV or the computer for that fact. If you have a list (without summaries is fine) please PM it to me, if you'd like. I need brainfood. mrgreen

I have a whole long list of books I like on my profile.

No summaries. Just the title and the author.

Some of them are plays, though. I don't think I specified which. But anything listed on there by Marlowe, Shakespeare, or Chekhov is a play.

i've got the whole collected works of Shakespeare sitting on my shelf. XP I'll have to take a look at that list then.

Hey, I studied a bunch of those authors in French. Have you ever read anything by Jean Paul Sartre?

Actually, I just bought Anti-Semite and Jew today...er...yesterday.

But no, I haven't read anything by him as of yet. Which according to several people I know is utter blasphemy.

I almost bought a beautiful leather-bound set of his complete plays from the 1800's today, but I didn't really feel like shelling out the ₤70 for it.

My English teacher assigned us a story in a book published in the 1980s and one of Sartre's was in there. It was called "The Wall". It was quite interesting and the end was awesome. And it was in English. xd

We read "Les Jeux Sont Fait" in my french class last year. In French.

Hm. I paid $10 CND for mine a little while ago. It was a pain in the behind to haul home from the bookstore.

Yeah, getting them home was another reason I didn't get them.

And the fact that I already have them all.

But mine aren't as pretty. cry
