I've noticed everybody seems to have their own favoured methods, techniques and styles in sparring and was just wondering what everybody's were?
I could best be described as a headhunter, there's nothing I like more than slapping my foot into someones head then following up with lots of punches to the face. I've also been described as a 'leggy b*****d' (I have unually long legs and like to use em, and I do TKD which is known for its kicking).
So what about everybody else? Do you like wading in there with your feet or your hands? Are you an offensive fighter or defensive figher? Or a balance of both? What technique do you find most satisfying to pull off?

Well in sparring it really depends on who you are facing as to what techniques you use. Such as yourself you say you have long legs but what if you fought someone that was 1 or 2 feet taller than you? Your aggresive kicking might not do that well so you would have to react to your opponents attacks to close the gap. Although I would have to say I'm a mix of aggresive and defencive fighting and tend to use hand grabs to my advantage.

I haven't sparred yet, but if I did, it would be a bit of both, offensive and defensive. I haven't gotten far into hapkido to know what move i would love to pull of, but so far it's the backhand fist (I did pull it off a couple of times wink .

Lol, to be 1 or 2 two foot taller than me they'd have to be 7 an a half to 8 an a half feet high.. that'd be so scary I wouldn't try an fight em...
But if I did my basic style would stay the same, I'd be hopin that someone so big wouldn't be able to move so fast, wait for them to make a move, move past whatever they chucked them glide in with a kick to the body (I can kick to 8 foot but I wouldn't recommened it in sparrin) followed up by lots of hands then get back out again (ideally helped by a kick on the way back out). I can see what you're sayin about adapting to somebody elses style and I do to a certain extent but you cant to much otherwise you end up fighting in a style that isn't comfortable to you and they are so you'll probably lose anyway.
And yeah backfists are awesome, if you get yourself turned around in a fight ( a bad position to be in) a spinning backfist will do wonders for keepin people away from the back of your head..

since I'm a kickboxer, I have quite a bit of experience in the sparring arena. we usually do it just about every night.

as far as my style goes, my coach describes me as "earthy" I like to wait for my oppnent to come in and wail on him when he makes a mistake. I guess you can call me a defensive fighter, but I have my share of offence as well. usually, I'll use a leg to hand combination to close the distance, then a couple of hand techniques, then wade out with a kick.

my fav hand techniques at the moment are the hook punch and overhand right. I'm trying to work on my inside game right now, so don't be surprised if uppercuts get added to the mix. biggrin

I like the ol' backfist-reverse punch-roundhouse kick combo. It gets results.

I have a couple of nice tricks.
Firstly step on your opponents front foot as you move in. He can't back away and tends to bend over backwards to avoid you firsts. Sheft the foot to just behind the leg and floor him..... fun.

Also straight punch to chin, oppenent deflects, large stp forward and move in with an elbow with the same arm.... very nice.....

If you are sparring with your juniors, get in close... very close.... junoris HATE that....heheheh

My nickname? "Sijeh b***h from hell"..... muahahaha

I am not nasty... really i'm not!

Yeah I've been working on inside hand combos too, I used to be a bit punch shy so my instructor has been pairing me up with mahoosive bruisers with quick hands and banning me from using kicks.... Got quite into poppin the chin up with an uppercut then tappin it with a hook or cross

Yeah that one works really well, and if you're sparring you can easily do it tap, tap, tap, but then if you really need to you can put stupid ammounts of power into it

Hehe, we're not allowed to do that in sparrin but you can get away with it if you do it quickly enough. Step in ('accidentaly' steppin on the front foot on the way in), chuck a punch at their face and when they pull back leave your foot on theirs just long enough to tug then let go and watch the results as they land on their arse...

Again we're not alowed to use elbows (or knees) in sparrin so have to practise thar sort of thing on a punch bag... sad tho if a junior grade is kicking you a bit hard (like they do sometime, bless em) dropping an elbow into their kick does wonders for getting them to tone it down a bit biggrin

Lol yeah it is quite good fun that. Just using movement generally is good fun with juniors, they usually tend to be a bit static or if they do move its backwards and forwards, so you just sidestep anything they chuck at you then get in really close and smile at em from about six inches away then get back out again.

oh, I should mention that as far as sparring goes, especially with mixed boxing rules, there's nothing more versatile than a good jab.

it's not a power punch, but you hit someone in the head a couple dozen times and they're going to feel it no matter how well trained they are.
also, as an added bonus, this is an offensive as well as defensive weapon. you see your opponent start rushing in, you start throwing jabs and BAM. he's stopped. he has to shift his strategy. and any shift is a potential gain for you.

On the other hand, you want to lead in to set up for your power punches, there's nothing like a couple of jabs to keep his guard up and put him on the defensive so you can set up a good power punch to knock him to the ground.

Also, the jab can be used at a variety of angles. if you're up against someone who has a good pat down, all you have to do is side step a little to the left, and you'll open up a good 6 inches to your left jab. same thing goes to the right side.

You can even throw jabs at odd angles because it comes out so damn quickly, especially if you've trained it decently. up, down, from the sides, around his guard..it's all there.

Just remember, it's not a power punch. this is the setup. this is the mind game. this is your opportunity to tell your opponent unequivocally that he's your b***h. biggrin

The jab isn't the bread and butter of all true boxers without just cause.

Oh hell yeah, I do love the jab. And as you said skipping to the side helps loads, I have noticed that if you stick your fist into someones face, if they know what they are doing they will imediately punch back at where they think you are (they dont tend to be sure if they have a fist in their face), if you are skipping sideways, a) they will miss and b) they open themselves up for the cross. Used this to great effect at my last comp, the guy I lost to managed to figure it quite quickly and adjusted his point of aim but the guy before that fell for it over and over smile

In MMA I usually just do whatever seems open, but in Gyrugi sparring I usually go for head shots to score.
