This belongs in the Gear subforum. I'll move it there. . .

Anyway, yes I was one of the main people talking about building guitars.

As for the cost of building a guitar, it really all depends on what you want to do. If you want a single color, non-fancy tone machine, you'll save a lot of money by NOT buying a $200 piece of AAAA Flamed Maple for a top, and dyes for the finish. You'd be better off buying a nice piece of Alder (around 50 bucks, depending on where you get it), or Mahogany (african mahogany costs around 70 bucks, again depending on where you get it from). Also you need to consider whether your making the neck from scratch, in which case youll spend about 40 more bucks on wood, give or take, for the neck and fretboard, but possibly more for a nice quality prefab neck. The most expensive thing about guitar building, however, tends to be hardware and pickups. A single good DiMarzio can run you about 70 bucks a pop, and an Original Floyd Rose trem costs about $200 new.

Tell us some of your specifics and I'm sure we can help you out with more specific prices.

And I was the other main guy talking about building one. Make sure you get quality tuners and a neck you actually like. And get a hold of Client Searcy (Home Page) if you are interested in a using mixed pickups. I hear that he is awesome, stands completely behind his work, and with custom wind even the oddest combination of pickups to match well together.

I am very interested in what design ideas you have, so please let everyone know what you are looking into. I am probably going to start work on my body when my bass player, navyblue, leaves for the army next month.

Yeah I almost forgot about Dancing With Myself sweatdrop (btw dude, whats your name, so i can call you that instead. . . i hate calling people by their aliases when I know'em pretty well)

Anyway, between the two of us we can help you with any questions your uncle cant answer. We've both been reading up on it for ever (ive been researching and geeking out for about 2 years now), and we're both pretty close to starting our own projects.

if u wanna make it from scratch, its all on where you get things. i dont really advise making a neck for your first one, because if its even a little off, it wont sit right with the guitar. it'll save you time and grief if you visit www.warmoth.com or www.stewmac.com and getting a neck thats customizable, like they both have neck blanks. making a body is easy though. just get a slab of a good wood(Poplar is great for a first shot, because its easier on the wallet and it still sustains well. Alder is good for beginning too) and stencel on the design. you can just cut that out on a bandsaw and file it down. a router will do great to hollow out spots for hardware. one thing i cant stress enough though is sanding. if it isn't perfectly smooth and even, the paint will expose it later. idk how you would do tyedye paint though. i've made 2 bodies already in my school shop class. i got credit, and the hardware store gave me a discount because its for a school project. thats the bes way to go, because u can always bring it home.
