Part 1
Title - So One Traitor Still Lives
Time - Late Afternoon of Day 1
Characters - Sirena, Feanaro, crows
Summary - Idle and somewhat friendly banter ends up giving Sirena a good lead to the direction one of her 'evil' children is in.

T h e old queen of the night moved with the elegance and decorum that most distinguished her kind. She was slender, with greying fur and dull, empty eyes and yet she was still so very much a wolf.

She moved as silently as a ghost through the trees, her eyes that seemed to be hazed with fatigue still quite aware of her surroundings. She was the observant and intelligent.

Above her in the low canopy came a harsh croaking of a spooked crow, it's great black wings crashing through the branches and leaves that rained down upon her unsuspecting head.

She paused to growl at the winged creature, her eyes narrowing with irritation. Stupid beast. She muttered with a growl, lips curling back to reveal her ivory fangs.

However, it seemed that the crow was long gone.

The sun was dipping down so that the whole sky was bathed in an orange glow, but Sirena did not notice this. The world to her eyes was no longer beautiful. It was a never-ending winter, trapped in an eternal cold darkness that insisted on nipping at her heels wherever she went.

This cold would continue to pursue her until her thirst for revenge had been sated.

However she had travelled for days and found nothing, no scent, no tracks, not a single sign that she was close to any of her traitorous children.

It was with this frustration that she slunk down the bank to the slim, dark river where she lowered her head to drink, her pale body standing out against the browns and greens that scattered the ground beneath her paws.

The crow hadn't vanished completely. The creature soon met with a large flock of his wind brothers and sisters, all of them flying silently upon dark wings through the forest like an ominous wind. In the red and gold light they looked like a dark cloud, feathers and eyes gleaming like flakes of opal and orbs of gold. Soon the murder erupted from the trees near the river, circling shortly before swarming back to the trees.

Another pair of larger, more fiery golden orbs appeared from the trees ahead of a mountain of muscle and dusty fur. The crows circled above the figure before dispersing and returning to the boughs of the trees- save for one. A crow with faint stripes of white along his wings. This one, a larger, older crow landed on the wolf's scarred shoulder, crouching down to watch the female dangerously.

The wolf didn't seem to be too concerned with the female, walking himself proudly and dangerously forward towards the water. His eyes shifted slightly to observe her but not once did his pace slow.

The lanky, lone she-wolf spluttered into her water, raising her head very slightly so that the drips fell from her muzzle and rang music upon the surface of the river.

She had a strong dislike for males, a distrust that spurned from the days of her early pup-hood. The father who had abandoned her, the father who had never shown his face. The male wolves who had killed her mother. Only Kafara her now long dead mate had ever truly warmed her heart.

But now he was gone and her heart was ice.

She growled low and threatening, taking a small step sideways away from him. She was not one to cower away from battle but she could not afford to get injrued again. She was aging and she knew deep down that she was running out of time. Another serious injury could put her off her task or even worse, kill her.

Well, well, well. She spoke just loud enough for the passing wolf to hear her words. What do we have here? Such a fine and brutish male. There was a hint of flirtation to her voice - though it was there with the purpose of trying to manipulate him if he fell for her roguish charms.

The massive wolf's dangerous eyes turned to the female slowly as she addressed him. His stride coming to a smooth stop by the side of the river some distance away, perhaps a few yards at most. His nose wrinkled slightly at her tone. A female who spoke with the tounge of a temptress and a serpant. He was older, wiser than he had been. In his youth perhaps such a complement would have thrown all caution to the wind. He knew better. "One with a fine and brutish mate." He countered darkly, lifting his head and tail, the pose of an alpha, the pose of a wolf who was not to be toyed with.

The crow on his shoulder cawed, flapping his wings to balance himself on the muscular shoulder as it shifted benieth him slightly.

A male who had rejected her advances!? Unheard of! Though this wasn't quite true. Sirena loved to think of herself as a beauty to be beheld in the gaze of all males - despite the fact she disliked them.

With a small laugh the she wolf brought herself into a casual sitting position, ears dropping so they were almost parallel to her skull. She hated submissing to anyone but when it was to preserve her life she was left with little choice.

Ah, but why should such a king of beasts stick with only one mate when there are many willing females in these woods? Her words were almost purred - if a wolf could do such things.

It was then that her eyes flickered to the crow on his shoulder and a slight frown wrinkled her furred brow. Though I see you prefer the company of the winged creatures. She shook her head as if to forget the idea and once again turned hazel eyes upon the large male. But tell me, with whom do I speak?

Take another mate? Unheard of. By the code of the wolf a noble would only take one mate. She would be the only one, the perfect one. One that he would fight for, have her fight to prove her worth to him, the only one worthy of bearing his children... of course he felt he might have strayed a bit from that path with Khalaria... but he had been young. Young and foolish. His children were no disappointments to him either, Ken and Barry, both magnificant heirs to his bloodline. "A lost one then." He sighed dismissively.

'Lost one' was his pack's term for any wolf that didn't know the ways of the -true- wolf, or what he had been taught by his noble mother...

"A king." He smirked, a dangerous and almost devious expression that still haunted the minds of wolves who had long grown by now... mere pups when that expression had become infamous, "Because I am just that- a king... a noble wolf who would do nothing to taint his honor. I need only one mate. For her I have waited all my life, for her I bear these scars, even if they are from her own maw."

He scoffed at the comment about the crows, glancing shortly to the murder watching from the trees, "I am Feanaro... alpha of the Lipan, the wolves of the mountian."

In all honesty Sirena was of the same mind. She had only ever had one mate. One. Her beloved and strong, dark-pelted mate with his brilliant golden eyes. He was powerful and brave, honourable and loving. He was Kafara and he was /hers/ even though death had stolen him from her.

It was most likely his death that had destroyed whatever sanity she had left.

Though she did not understand what Feanaro spoke of she could gain some idea and with a small toss of her nose she glanced up to the trees, almond-shaped eyes portraying her surprise at his words.

Well then King of the Mountain, she smiled a little, I am truly honoured to meet with you today. In fact your name rings a familiar tone in my head though I can't say why. For she too had heard whispers of rumor about the woods despite the fact she tried to avoid company.

You look upon no wolf of importance, for as my body suggests I am lone, though I hope soon to change it. She nodded, relaxing her form and curling her tail to lay cradled in her forepaws. Tell me King Feanaro, why have you dwelled from your lands? Is there treachery afoot? Believe me, I know of such things. She had become almost casual and friendly now, though one could take that as her way of respecting this superior wolf.

Thalion
Feanaro listened quietly, his eyes narrowed down on the female thoug he showed no sign of aggression. His expression was a thoughtful and cautious one. He always seemed to be thinking these days, plotting, scheming perhaps even if one were to take it that far.

"Hmm..." He lifted his head, glancing out towards the freelands from over the lake's waters, "I have come to see for myself why the land has become so silent... my spies have had little to report in the past moons. The packs that were once our greatest threats have become silent or no more..." Secondly, his sons were out there somewhere, trying to recruit more wolves into their pack... if something happened to them he'd never forgive himself.

Kimaria
Silent? She tipped her ears forward and glanced at him with interest. In fact she looked quite beautiful when she was in this state of calm and somewhat normal. Apparently being in the presence of a superior with an obvious love of words had a good effect on her temperament.

Strangely enough I have noticed the same... She paused and closed her eyes, sighing deeply before continuing. I search for my lost children, my sons and my daughter but in all these days I have not caught a scent nor heard a single word of them. She opened her eyes to gaze at the masked wolf. I am becoming fearful for their safety...

Thalion
The wolf did not look back at her, his eyes remained on the distance as if hoping to pierce the trees with his gaze, "It's a dangerous place, the freelands... as a pup I was tormented in ways that no beast should endure... only those who live from the flesh of the fallen remained by my side. Even my love betrayed me and left these scars on me." He rolled his scarred shoulder a bit and though he had forgiven Selia, it was warning enough to never let one's guard down.

"It's best you find them, and quickly." He added.

Kimaria
She nodded sharply and turned her own gaze to scan across the water. I am sorry for your hardship, it seems life has sunk it's teeth into yet another innocent victim. Why is it the noble and wisest of us suffer whilst the foul creatures roam freely? She shook her head and huffed, exhaling sharply through her flared nostrils.

I have scars though none that show. Mine lie within me, eating away at my insides. Some say it's just old age, but life has not been kind to me. It stole away those I loved and now I roam this land alone, searching for a sign of them, any sign at all. She paused then and tipped an ear towards Feanaro. King of the mountain... She spoke, as a high ranking wolf and with these so called spies, would I be correct in assuming you know these parts well? Including wolves who live here? Perhaps you have come by my offspring? There was hope in her voice and her tone sounded genuinely worried for her lost children.

Thalion
Feanaro watched her out of the corner of his eye though it was difficult to tell exactally what was going on behind them. Perhaps the term 'masked' was fitting in more ways then one.

At length he replied carefully, slowly, "My spies know much of what happens in the lowlands. Of the wolves and packs though as you might imagine, no common wolf would share his or her name with something they assume is so common-placed... would you introduce yourself to a squirrel or perhaps a doe?"

Kimaria
She laughed at his words, her head thrown back to utter the somewhat pleasant sound and getting to her paws she turned towards him, tail unmoving and head held slightly lower than his own. I see your point, and no, I would not introduce myself to a lesser being, though it is my thoughts towards them that makes them useful to you, correct?

She paused, her maw held open slightly as she pondered her next words. Then perhaps if your spies have not heard of them you have, for you seem wise in yoru ways and knowledgable of the area. She let her head droop lower and closed her eyes. Their names... and she raised her head quickly again to search his face for recognition. I search for a daughter, her name is Orphen. I also search for two sons, Sable and Gizmo. A small whimper left her throat, I have not seen them since they were pups but I have not forgotten them, nor given up my search...

Thalion
Feanaro smirked slightly, nodding at the first question. Those that were underestimated were those that should always be kept close. The less someone thought of something, or someone, the more powerful they could become. Silent eyes and ears always watching and none gave a second thought to it.

The second question brought a wince to his face, his teeth grinding slightly, "I know nothing of Orphen... but Sable was slain." He sighed, dipping his head, "As a mere pup at the jaws of Haku's pack... he was torn in half. Gizmo escaped and lives to this day I believe..."

Kimaria
Sirena listened to his words as if her life depended on it. Her face was strained with tension as she awaited his reply and was only half satisfied with the answer. Sable....dead. No. No that couldn't be, it was her place to kill her son, not others. She shook her head defiantly and took a small step towards the male wolf.

Then Gizmo is not with his sister as I would have hoped? Do you have any idea where my son dwells? Is he no logner in the freelands? Is that why his scent evades me? There was desperation in her voice and something else quivering in the back of her throat. Even if you cannot say for sure, a simple direction would be enough. I feel my time for this world grows short and there are things I must say to my children before the stars claim my soul. Her body trembled and her piercing eyes seemed suddenly brighter than usual from the liquid tears that dwelled within them.

Thalion
Feanaro watched her, frowning slightly. He hadn't been able to find Gizmo again... his last report was that he had pups of his own and was leaving Haku's pack to begin one of his own, a quarrel with Gaara, his adopted son, and tension between their packs was the most of it.

"Gizmo and I went our seperate ways long ago... last I have heard of his where-abouts were among Haku's pack but planning on leaving. My crows have had their gaze fixed on threats rather than friends for a time. I must apologize."

Kimaria
Sirena bristled at her words and in her mind came yet more thoughts, thoughts that darkened her views of her children even more. So the runt son that had been born from her had not only turned against her, but had turned against his own brother too! He had been living with the wolf who had apparently 'killed' Sable? She growled then and snapped her head to the side, gazing out across the trees. Very well. Her lips curled up over her fangs. Then I guess my search continues and probably will for a very long time. She cast her eyes briefly towards him. I think it's time I parted ways with you King of the Mountain. You have been of great help to be sure. Atleast now I have a rough idea of my son's last home. If he has moved he will have left tracks or friends behind who will lead me. She lowered her voice to speak to herself, though perhaps not so quiet that Feanaro wouldn't hear. I will find him. Then with a curt nod of her head she turned and moved off through the trees.

Thalion
Feanaro narrowed his eyes slightly on the retreating form, slightly unsettled from her angry response. Anger was expected... but towards news of her son leaving a pack? That was a bit bizzare. "Surru..." He said quietly as the wolfess faded from sight, "Keep threw of your murder on her... then send the rest to find Gizmo."
