STORY

Europe stood at the center of the Cultural Awakening at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Art and music and the theater began to reach the masses as well as the power and the intellectual. This is how the Avant-Garde Society was born. Creative geniuses and their employers became as infamous as royalty and used their influence to shape the World as it blossomed around them.

But where there is beauty . . . there is also danger.

Sabriel de Lacroix is the entrepeneur and ringmaster of a circus unlike any other -- where the performers are as beautiful as they are graceful.

Enchanting! the critics rave.

If only they knew how right they were. If only they knew that Sabriel de Lacroix was a Master Vampire and that every dancer, acrobat, and magician were descendants of his Line who feed from members of the audience while under his spell.

But what they don't know can't hurt them.

Until a detective with pagan ancenstryand latent psychic powers suspects that Sabriel and his Children are up to no good, that is. Will he spill their secret or will he be seduced like so many others and become a Child of the Night himself . . . ?

Only time will tell.

TERMINOLOGY

Master Vampire: A master vampire is powerful enough to control any vampire he has sired. A master vampire can also fly and use their voice and eyes to hypnotize their victims.

Children: A master vampire will often refer to those he/she has sired as children or offspring. The more children one has and the better, for a master vampire can draw additional strength from each individual.

Bloodline: The collective descendants of a master vampire.

Lesser Vampire: Lesser vampires are usually young and have not come into their full power. Sometimes they are simply weak. Any vampire can sire another, but any vampire sired by a lesser vampire can never become a master vampire. This does not mean, however, that a vampire can become a master vampire merely because he/she was sired by one. Those who do are no longer bound to their sire and are free to do as they wish.

Human Servant: A human servant is an individual bound to a master vampire. This is done by feeding from them regularly without offering them blood in return. A human servant will live as long as the master vampire does.

Glamour: Elementary magic vampires use to make themselves more beautiful. A more powerful vampire can ususally see through such tricks.

CHARACTER PROFILES

Sabriel de Lacroix played by Kumosan

Age: 359

Status: Master Vampire

Description: As young farm boy living in the French countryside, Sabriel knew only sunshine and the reward of hard work. He enjoyed plowing the fields with his father, making paper flowers for his sisters, weeding his mother's vegetabe garden and skipping rocks across the river with the two boys who also worked for his father.

The day he turned twelve, however, a band of soldiers returning from one of France's many crusades descended upon their small village, raping, burning, and pillaging. Sabriel escaped with his youngest sister, Fleur, who died of her wounds sometime later. Transformed into a homeless orphan overnight, Sabriel survived by learning how to pick pockets and expoiting the sympathy of wealthy women with his good looks. One such woman, however, took special interest and welcomed him into her home. A powerful Master Vampire disguised as royalty, she fed, clothed, and educated Sabriel before finally turning him at the age of twentyfive. He grew strong under her guidance and soon became a Master Vampire himself.

Having developed a taste for beauty and the unnatural he began collecting it in the form of dancer, singers, acrobats, magicians, and lovely young maidens who could be taught to do such things. This is how the Red Circus was born.

Scarlett Romaijn played by Kumosan

Age: 41

Status: Lesser Vampire

Description: Known for making dresses almost as lovely as she was, Scarlett was raised by her father, a simple tailor who died unexpectedly of a stroke at the age of thirty. Scarlett was seized by local nobleman along with the rest of their property to settle a pending debt. A cruel, perverse individual, she spent only a year in his service before strangling him to death in his sleep after repeated attempts to molest her.

Sabriel happened to be passing by as she was being taken into custody and bought her freedom -- a gesture of mercy that most certainly saved her life. She did not wish to be turned, however, and twenty years later has yet to forgive him for making her one of the beautiful dead. Despite this, she is his favorite child and one of the more popular performers, a knife thrower as well as an acrobat.

If Sabriel had his way, Scarlett would willingly remain at his side forever. But as he watches her grow more and more powerful with each passing day, he knows only has so long to win her over before she becomes a Master Vampire and moves out of reach.

Syanthe Delrose played by Ryujikin

Age: 327

Status: Master Vampire

Description: Syanthe has long refused to speak of her past time as one of the living, deeming it far too cold and domineering for her current deathstyle. Rumored to have been Turned in a freak accident and having never meant to be a Child of the Night, Syanthe shot down every single person who dared to make a pass at her prior life. Literally. Speciallizing in marksmanship and sniping, the Master Vamp is hardly ever seen without her trusty guns. At least, they're there, but you might not see them . . .

Despite obvious overbearing and frightening stay-aways, Syanthe could quite possibly be the most sociable person ever alive, or dead. She loves a good party with plenty of booze, blood, and sex. She has often been described as the party animal of the Vampire Populace. She joined up with Sabriel mainly because wherever he went, a crowd was sure to follow. Where there's a crowd, there'll be parties, blood, and sex. Syanthe also works as the Red Circus's unofficial publicity master. After all, dropping a line about a gorgeous circus with equally gorgeous participants at a huge party is the perfect way to gain some tasty bites--er--customers.

Syanthe has built up a reputation of being the most racous Vampire on the planet without revealing the race's existence (a feat recognized by other Vampire Masters with grudging respect and not a little bit of hilarity) and the Vampire you would go to for the obscure and the occult. Ignoring the crazed, partying normality, Syanthe is most likely the most knowledgeable gossip around.

Syanthe has allegedly never Turned anyone, most likely because of her past. Others say that she is simply too independent to bother, while still more insist that she is too selfless to steal power from a Changling (these people were shot down in public). Be wary about her. She's fun, funny, and great to talk to, but piss her off and you'll meet the wrong end of her guns.
