The days seemed to slip by with little or no occurances. Kinja had begun to seperate herself from her cubs more and more to the point where she felt they would take little notice to her now. It was only right afterall. They were all nearing adulthood now and soon would strike out on their own. She didn't want to be the reason for them to sacrifice their future lives just so they will stay by her. No. Kinja wouldn't do that to them. Besides, it was looking very unlikely that Kinja would ever see them reach full maturity.
Kinja was old, and her old age was certainly catching up to her. So much in fact that she had gotten ill. It had started out as nothing more than a mere cold but it was steadily getting worse. It wouldn't be much longer until she fell prey to either the sickness or something else looking for an easy meal. Oh well, the sooner her time came, the sooner she would be with her beloved. Funny how things turn out really. Kiu died of an illness and now she herself would most likely as well.
Sighing, Kinja layed her head tiredly between her paws, eyes gazing around at nothing much before slowly closing. Her body was warm already from a fever but she paid it little mind as she basked in the sun. The warmth of the sun was something she craved for daily. It was certainly something she had picked up while living in the desert. While in the Pridelands Kinja very much enjoyed the cool retreat of the pridal den than roasting herself under the suns hot rays.

He had been aware of his mother's decline in strength but had tried his best to ignore it. If he didn't admit there was something wrong with her then there wouldn't be.

Ignore it and it'll go away!

Well apparently this theory wasn't working very well and Hakan felt guilty that he had been leaving more often to complete duties for Mrost. He had been negllecting his duties to his mother and in his heart those were far more important than any other.

He moved towards the old lioness slowly and quietly, face looking quite sad as he settled beside her.

"How...how are you today mother?" His voice sounded tranquil but nervous, as if he dreaded the answer.

Eyes opened at the sound of her son's voice. Lifting her head she smiled softly to him. "I am alright, Hakan." Kinja was not about to tell her cubs how tired and weak she was but by the look on Hakan's face it was quite clear that at least he had noticed.

"So, if you don't mind me asking, where have you been sneaking off to? I've noticed you've been spending less and less time around the den or with your siblings." She looked at him knowlingly. "IS there some lucky lioness that has caught your eye?"

Kinja did not know about Hakan's pact with Mrost. She was blissfully unaware that her son was doing much of the same thing she had done in her youth. If she had any idea of wha tHakan was doing she'd have done everything in her power to stop him. To have one's own life in the grasp of the immortals was not something she'd ever wish upon someone let alone her own son. The Gods were nothing but trouble in Kinja's eyes even if one of them helped her get the love of her life.

He smiled warmly, his eyes softening at his mother's words. Atleast she was doing okay, it was better than not doing fine at all.

"Something like that..." He drifted off, he had been wondering on how to approach the subject with his mother but had so far come up trumps. Now it seemed that he had been given the opportunity on a silver platter.

"Apparently there's one girl who I just couldn't resist..." He had been worrying like hell since he'd heard the news from Mbaya's own mouth and as far as he knew Kamal hadn't said anything. He wriggled uncomfortably for a moment and let his head hang a little lower so that the tuft of his mane hung in his eyes.

"I got myself into a bit of an awkward situation to say the least." His cheeks felt hot. "I ended up getting a girl...pregnant." He winced at his own words, ears flattening slightly.

This was embarrassing!

Kinja took a moment to grasp what her son had just told her. After a moment or two, when her mind was able to wrap around the news she took a deep breath and looked at Hakan. "While I feel you're still a bit too young for such an endevour, I have to strongly insist that you be a part of your cubs lives."

Kinja shifted her weight a bit to make herself mor comfortable looking at her son. It was quite hard looking impending and serious when she felt so weak and tired, but she felt she had to get through to Hakan. "Whether you want these cubs or not Hakan you engaged in a relationship that was destined to bring this result. Don't walk away from it. Just remember what it was like for you to grow up without your father. Would you want to do that to your own cubs? Would you want them pinning for their father while their mother is forced to just comfort them, telling them that maybe one day they'll meet him when she knows they most likely never will? Please don't do that to your own litter Hakan."

Kinja sighed and looked to the ground for a moment, collecting herself before looking at her son again. "It's unlikely that I'll be with you much longer. Knowing you nowhave more family around you will ease my troubled mind. Don't push them away."

He listened to the words as if they were gospal, snuggling close to rest his head on her shoulder. He still felt too young himself and he was afraid but he also knew his mother was right.

"Yes, you're right mother. I can't abandon them, I won't do that to innocent lives. I'm not ready to be a father but...but I won't make them suffer because of my mistake."

He sighed softly. "I was thinking of names for them the other day and I've not even seen them yet. Is that odd? I was thinking of naming them after the stars...after what you told me about them." He smiled, but the smile soon gave way to grief at his mother's last words. Whiskers and ears drooping.

"Mother...please...please don't say such things. I know you're unwell but you'll get better. I need you. I /need/ you." He sounded so much like a cub then, far too young to start a family of his own.

He was scared.

Kinja smiled warmly. "I am glad to hear that, Hakan. Your cubs deserve to know you." She looked at him before licking the top of his nose affectionatly.

"Odd? No, not at all. When I had my first litter I was constantly thinking of names for them." She smiled fondly. "It's not odd at all, thought if you wait the cubs may help you to name them on their own. That's how I names you and your siblings. Your personalities helped me name you all."

At the sound of Hakan's cub-like plead Kinja felt her heart ache. "Hakan, I won't be around forever as much as you wish for me to be. You are doing well on your own. There will be mistakes made but they will be stepping stones for you to build character and learn who you truly are. I can't be there for you always, even if I am still living. You will one day move off. You aren't far from doing that. Already you spend days away from here and return for short periods of time before leaving again. SOmetimes I feel as if Iam holding you all back."

He nuzzled his face against her and snuffled quietly, his ears turning towards the sound of her voice. It was soothing and calm and a great joy to listen to it. Somehow the tone in which she spoke was always therapeutic , helped by the fact she always spoke so wisely.

"Do you ever miss your other cubs mother?" He paused and drew in a shaky breath. "Or your old home in the desert?" For Kinja had not yet been told of Hakan's venture into the Firekin lands or his dealings with a possible loud-mouthed niece.

He tried to forget that his mother was old, so very desperately but her words once again hit some truths that he'd rather not hear. "You never hold me back mother, never. This is where I want to be. By your side. Not out there, it's just sometimes it can't be helped."

Kinja looked at Hakan with a surprised look. How could he know? She had kept silent about her other litter, well, a feww slip ups here and there, but she certainly didn't mention anything about the desert. Never. She didn't want to run the risk that her children would go off in search of their half-siblings. That would be disasterous one more than one way!

"Hakan, I don't know you you found that out but you musn't tell your brother and sister. In fact, I don't want you ever going there either. It's for your own good. The pride...well...they aren't the most friendly to outsiders and I fear that you may find yourself in deeper than you could handle. I have no idea how large the pride could have grown since now...if...if there is still even a pride there. Promise me you will not ever go there." She looked at him sternly, his last few words lost on the breeze for Kinja was far too concerned for her cub than for her own minds peace. She needed to make sure that Hakan would not do something stupid.

But could he really make that promise knowing that one day Mrost might lead him back to that land? He had to admit he was curious about his siblings and about the Pride but...his mother knew best, right?

She had lived there, brough up children there and left them despite the fact they were all she had. If his mother had felt the need to leave then it couldn't be as grand as everyone made it out to be.

Then as he looked into her brilliant blue eyes he felt his heart twinge, how could he say no to that face?

"I promise mother, and don't worry, the desert doesn't suit someone with a dark pelt like mine anyway." He smiled softly, trying not to ruin their conversation by worrying her. "I don't do well in the sun and now I've got cubs on the way there won't be much time to go journeying around."
