You know, for some reason, I can't help but feel annoyed whenever Roger says "Yuppy scum." Yuppy scum? I mean, seriously, that is so lame. Who says yuppy? noone even says scum, unless they're talking about my brother's room. I mean, I don't know if anyone feels the same way, but I think Roger could have come up with a better insut. Psht! rolleyes Yuppy scum...

I never really thought of it like that. Around the late 80s / early 90s, the phrase "yuppie" was more commonly used. Soap scum, shower scum, yuppie scum. It seems right to me.

A yuppie is a high-society person
The kind of guy you see clinking champagne glasses with rich and famous people and kissing a**
While wearing one of their 20 Gucci belts and the top fashions, of course
And scum...
Well, it's scum
The lowest of the low

Well, sounding lame to someone is a personal preferance. There's no right or wrong here... To each his own I say. Personally, I agree that it sounds a bit odd... But he liked it, hence why he used it. *Shrug* And by definition, it makes perfect sense.

I like it when he says that. I think it's funny. "It's true you're with this yuppy scum?" I love it. It seems like the ultamate insult at them moment. He couldn't say much else in lou of Angel's death. You should listen to the full version of Good-bye Love... "Maybe you'll see why when you stop escaping your pain. At least now if you try, Angel's death won't be in vain!"

You wouldn't say it now, but remember RENT was supposed to be in '89. Also, Benny uses it first in the Broadway version at the beginning of LVB. "Was the yuppie scum stomped? Not counting the homeless..." Plus he used to live with the rest of them in the flat and poor, but then he married rich so he thinks he's special.
It's dated, yes, but it fits.

neutral Yeah, I still think it's lame, and now I feel bad about it because it makes perfect sense, but I still hate it.

I honestly really like it. It just seems like a very bohemian insult.

Fleaball RENT was supposed to be in '89.
*twitch*
Rent has no time!
It is timeless!
The movie director was just stupid like that and decided to put a year on it!

[ Amputated Freckle ] *twitch* Rent has no time! It is timeless! The movie director was just stupid like that and decided to put a year on it! Mmmfine. It was written in 89 and later, when the prase was still used. Better?
...I think the clothes date it slightly anyway. =P

It was COMPOSED in '96
You don't write operas
Which is what Rent is SUPPOSED to be
An opera
A rock-opera
And the clothes are way less period-fitting in the actual musical
The movie basically just took some songs and most of the plot aspects and threw away everything else and added some new stuff and bleargh
I still <3 watching the movie, though
I just wish Chris Columbus had been more faithful to the original
