http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060904/ap_en_tv/obit_irwinI've always had a problem with his style of interaction with the various animals he's worked with all his life. Trying to prove that people can co-exist with things that can randomly maim or kill you isn't a great idea to promote to the general public. You can only play with lightning so long without winding up struck by it. I really feel sorry for his wife and daughter, but they both knew the reality of what he was doing for wildlife. And his goal was noble.

Ya, I too have been at odds with certain aspects of his brand of nature awareness... especially that time he took his baby in the croc pen with him for a feeding. I agreethat there are certain times when you need to step back and say, "You know, this thing will eat me. I should probably move along now."
But he really did do a lot to raise awareness for the "less cute" animals of the world. And he certainly was a brave person. And he sure promoted the hell out of Australia.
But yes, his kids will be the most affected by his death. They will certainly miss out on having such a cool dad. It's just very tragic for them sad .

Loki omg! But yes, his kids will be the most affected by his death. They will certainly miss out on having such a cool dad. It's just very tragic for them sad . I agree with this. I believe he had two children. I seem to recall him bringing his older daughter to a network interview. The reality of living where they did makes involvement with dangerous creatures an every day experience. The pragmatic humor the Ausies developed over the centuries to cope with the reality of the wildlife of Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand is well known in that part of the world, but not appreciated in the rest of the so-called 'civilized world' we live in. I'm sure his wife and family will continue his work and honor what he began with his father. The zoo he headed will survive and bear witness to his efforts. And I'll miss his crikey humor as well. He is one of the few celbrities I wish I could have met in my life.

It's a story like Grizzly Man, only with less Godless Killing Machine mauling and more stabby-stabby in the heart.
Plus it's kind of fitting that a man who made his living fending off Australia's menagerie of things that can kill you ends up snuffing it via an Australian thing that can kill you. Crikey!
Yes, my sense of humour is tasteless.

I just find it ironic that he died in a freak accident ; scuba-diving, minding his own business, swam over a fish without seeing it and BAM! stabbed in the heart! For once, he didn't purposely interract with the creature. I was really expecting him to die of old age, covered in scars.

aoigetsu I was really expecting him to die of old age, covered in scars. It was poetic justice. Stabbed in the heart by a stingray. Died instantly. He died like a hero... In a way that defies all odds. And boy it did.

The ******** up thing is that he managed to provoke a stingray - normally extremely docile fish - to sting him straight into the heart. How on earth did he manage to do that? Usually stingrays sting humans when they get stepped on, since they hide themselves in the sand. They even have smiley faces! And this dude looks pretty pleased with himself, playing with a stingray. It didn't stab him.

I'm sure that the reported video shot of the event will turn up somewhere on the web very shortly.
And while it's true that you can interact with many forms of animals who can be perfectly docile most of the time, you sure don't want to be on the business end of their aggressive behavior that small percent of the time.
As others have commented, Steve was playing with lightning a lot of the time. I was always concerned that something he would do would provoke a hostile response from some animal someday. Until we see what he was doing in the water that day, we'll just be guessing.

For once, he didn't purposely interract with the creature. I was really expecting him to die of old age, covered in scars. From what I heard though, he was purposefully interacting with it. This all occured while he was filming a new documentry called "The Ocean's Deadliest" or something like that. And this segment was about the stingray. He was apparently swimming over it (above it) and it freaked out for some reason and raised its barb... which incidentally struck his chest. Reports also say he instinctively pulled the barb out of his chest, but that it had already pierced his lung (or heart, I'm not sure which) and he died shortly thereafter from cardiac arrest, I believe. Pronounced dead on arrival at the nearest medical facility. And yes, there apparently was a camera rolling when it all happened as the police and his producer have all viewed the video. And, as Max says, I'm sure some morbid person will manage to get ahold of it at some point and plaster it on the net.
