This story begins long ago, in a far-away place.

There was once a girl born in a desert land -- a planet so harsh that the people themselves were forced to grow harsh merely to survive... and even then, a great deal of luck couldn't hurt.

This female baby, this lucky one, defied the odds by surviving her childhood to grow into a strong, clever woman.

She learned to fight, to protect, to outwit, to love, to hate... to kill.

In such places, one's spirit grows old far before the body and mind.

This girl, this lucky one, found a way to escape from her destiny in that harsh, sun-baked world.

She stepped into a place called Gaia, and her life changed forever... for better in many ways, and still worse in others.

Destiny, it would seem, has no limits of space or time.....

Our story begins with the Fa'e dragon boy, Morion.

He was lead to the Through the Looking Glass shoppe by his Fa'e friend Kia, who hoped to lift her friend's ailing spirits by showing him the many antiques. Morion was not disappointed by what he found. The shoppe had no lack of unique and curious items from days long passed, and Morion quickly found something that appealed to his nostalgic side...

Morion took some time to examine the old book as he visited with Kia and Aurora. After flipping through the pages, the words "For Morion" were found on the inside of the front cover! But that was only the beginning of the strangeness...

No sooner had Morion decided to keep the book as his own, than it unlocked itself and opened of its own accord.

As Morion watched, a familiar face appeared to him on the pages of the old book.

It was none other than Smoke, Morion's guardian who had been unexpectedly killed several months earlier.

As the startled Fa'e watched, the image shifted and changed... becoming younger and somehow... different... but still very much the same.

Nothing could prepare Morion for what happened next...

The image he saw, perhaps compelled by his own wish, removed itself from the pages of the book and manifested itself as true flesh and blood!

This rambunctious girl immediately became attached to Morion, as if sensing the mysterious bond between them. Who is Sophie, and why did she decide to reveal herself to Morion? Only time will tell...

As recorded by Morion...

Quote:

October 4th, 2004 --

I've decided to keep a journal specifically for the new "addition" to my life -- and at my rather young age, I never expected to be a "father" so soon. Her name is Sophie, and I found her at the Through the Looking Glass shoppe while visiting some old friends.

The shoppe itself is a curious place, full of antiques and memorabilia from days long passed. And apparently many of the items contain some sort of magical ties, enabling them to show a "reflection" of the people who remain around them the longest. For example, my Fa'e friend Kia has a reflection, or "Simulacra," named Aurora who is now followoing her around much as a child would follow a parent. And there have been a handful of others who experienced the same....

...myself being among them.

Whether the book I found was the key itself, or whether it was merely a channel for the inevitable, I cannot say. What I do know is that Sophie appeared to me out of the blue and declared me as "hers." So now I'm a father of sorts. I mean, I couldn't just leave the girl at the shoppe! She's intelligent enough, if not a bit rowdy and tomboyish. And besides... she reminds me of Smoke.

Smoke was my Guardian... she was responsible for bringing my spirit into being in Gaia, and though she and I were vastly different, there was always a close, unspoken bond between us.

She was killed in a gunfight several months ago. Why this happened, I'm still not certain. Smoke wasn't one to talk about her past very often, and I always had a feeling that it was a point of grief and shame for her. I never tried to coax it out of her, but now... I almost wish that I had. If I only knew why all of this had happened, perhaps finding peace with the loss would have been easier.

But all that is over now, and I'm slowly learning to continue with my life... even though I feel daily as if a huge piece of myself is missing.

My friend Riven, another Fa'e and one wise to the ways of spirits, was able to tell me that Smoke's spirit remained with me after she died. Recently I had a chance to communicate with her -- and though perhaps I acted rashly in doing so, I begged Smoke to return to me if she could. Her spirit seemed to disappear, and Riven could no longer sense her at all.

And now, this girl...

Is it foolish of me to hope for the impossible? Could a normal mortal woman like Smoke return to us, reincarnated into a younger form?

It may be only my mind playing tricks on me, and I have to be careful not to become too centered on this idea. Sophie is just a young girl. She seems to have no memory of anything other than what she's done the day before and how good ice cream tastes.

And the "fact" that boys have cooties... something she continually reminds me of. >_>

Still... it's no wonder that she's endeared herself to me so quickly. Even if she remains Sophie forever, she has chosen me as her Guardian, and so I will protect her.

Right now she's trying to dismantle Quark (my biomechanical familiar), so I think I better see if I can find something a bit less delicate to entertain her with.

The door of the shoppe opens with the tinkling of bells, and a clattering can be heard along the floor... the sound of cowboy boots. And the owner of said boots is apparently running in circles.

"Hey, Mori!" Sophie's voice rings out excitedly. "Check out this clock! I didn't see this when I was here before!"

"Sophie..." Another voice, this one deeper and more tired. "Please don't break anything!"

"I'm not going to break anything!" The female voice giggles.

Morion flops down on the sofa, a cup of coffee in his hand. The Fa'e looks very tired indeed... but a bit of a smile still lingers on his face.

Sophie runs around the shoppe, looking and poking at things. "Where is everybody??"

Neith-Kia
Aurora was first to hear the newcomers to the shop, as always, and sprinted down the stairs in a clip-clop of sandals in her excited sugar-mood. Kia followed pretty quickly, more in an attempt to rescue whoever the poor person was than sharing Aurora's mood.

"Rora, stop scaring people!" Kia yelled, but she was too late to prevent anything.

Aurora had jumped on Morion's arm to hug it with a loud and cheerful, "Hello!" And then, once she'd said her greetings to him, she ran over to Sophie. "Hello!"

Kia gave Morion a weak smile, and flopped down next to him. She was tired, but that wasn't anything new lately. With a sigh, Kia told Morion, "Hello, how are you? Sophie is very active... just like Rora..."

GunsmokeGirl
Morion gives Aurora and Kia a sleepy smile. As Aurora goes to greet Sophie, he drapes his arm around Kia's shoulders. "You look as tired as I feel, Kiakia. I think Sophie and Aurora are stealing all our energy." He winks. "How are you doing?"

Sophie turns and waves, her face brightening as she sees Aurora again. "Hi! What's up?" She tips up her cowboy hat, her eyes sparkling and her tail swishing slowly from side to side. "Wanna play a game?"

Neith-Kia
Kia leaned into Morion, and patted the hand on her shoulder with both of hers. Yawning, she answered, "I am as tired as you feel then, MoriMori... I feel sleepy. Dreams always bad, and silly Rora is always awake when I wake up. There never any sleep in our house, I think."

Aurora nodded enthusiastically, and half-bounced. "What game? I like games, they're always fun!"

She glanced around, and picked up a fabric cord. Aurora tied it around her waist, for her own 'tail' and grinned at the other girl.

GunsmokeGirl
Morion nodded. "I'm convinced that Sophie doesn't need sleep to survive. I think she can live off Dr. Pepper and potato chips alone." He groans, trying not to smile at the thought as he rubs his forehead with his free hand. "I'm sorry you've been having bad dreams... is there anything worrying you? You know I'll listen..."

Sophie grins at Aurora's "tail," then glances around, putting a finger on her chin as she considers. "Hummmmm.... how about hide and seek! There's lots of neat places to hide in here, I bet."

Neith-Kia
"I think she and Sophie need sleepover. They can spend night at one house, we can spend night at another, problem solved." Kia tried weakly, although she kept getting the image of a ruined house... marshmallows, chips, drink and jello everywhere.

"Just bad dreams. Lots of them, but I never remember them when I wake up. Rora always is awake when I wake up, which is strange. I keep wondering if Rora is part to do with them...?"

Aurora pondered this choice, then happily squeaked, "Yay, let's play that! Who goes first, you or me?"

Her eyes darted around the shop, already plotting places to hide.

GunsmokeGirl
Morion seems to be reading Kia's mind, as he pictures the house in the same state of extreme chaos after the two girls' slumber party. "Maybe we can get them a padded room?" He smirks mischeviously.

The dragon Fa'e shifts a bit on the sofa as he considers Kia's dreams. "She could have something to do with them, I suppose. She's a part of you somehow, right? Maybe she's not sleeping because she has bad dreams, too?"

Sophie grins, pleased that Aurora wants to play. "Okay! I'll count first, and you can hide! But once I start looking, you have to make it back to the clock here and touch it before I tag you! If I tag you, then you have to count next! Sound good?"

She turns around and puts her hands over her eyes and begins to count. "One... two... three... four...." Her tail twitches excitedly. She just knows she's gonna win!

Aurora skipped to the door, and left a box there. This one she wanted to send all on her own!

Inside was this lanturn:

And the note, which was written with at least ten different shaded crayons...

Sophie was the first one awake -- as usual -- and she discovered the box on the doorstep. Her eyes glittering with excitement, she carried it back to Morion's room and jumped on the bed, bouncing up and down to wake the dragon Fa'e.

"Mori, Mori! Look what someone left for me!"

"Nrrrrghh..." Morion rolled over and pulled a pillow over his head. His next words came out all muffled. "Sophie, it's 6 am..."

"So get up, sleepy-head!" Sophie bounced up once more, pulling her feet up and landing on her bum. She giggled as she bounced a bit longer, then as she settled she pulled the box into her lap and began to open it carefully.

Morion rolled over, yawning wide, and smiled a bit as he watched Sophie open the box. As she withdrew the lantern, her eyes got very big. She held it up to the light by its string, admiring the colors. "It's so pretty!"

"Sort of like mine," Morion said, pointing toward the doorway to the balcony. Three chinese lanterns hung there for decoration.

Sophie grinned. "Can I hang mine up there, too?"

"Of course. I'll help you after breakfast. Who sent it to you?" Morion tilted his head slightly toward the box.

The girl held up the note that was included, grinning even wider still. "It's from Rora! Mori, I should buy Rora a gift too. Can I?"

A strong sense of deja-vu struck Morion like a Mac truck. The roles had once been reversed... Smoke had taken him on a search for gifts many times, and he had a good idea of which stores they should check. He blinked, shaking off the strange feeling. "We'll go down to the market today so you can pick something out."

With that, Sophie cheered and began bouncing again. Morion groaned and put the cover back over his face, but it was no use... he was already awake.

Later, Morion helped his young charge hang the lantern alongside his own.

It was the end of a rainy day, and you step outside for just a moment to see if the rain had finally let up. Just as you do so, you notice a small package carefully wrapped in plastic to keep the rain out, sitting on your door step. You recognize the familiar "Through the Looking Glass" stationary, on which is written:

Note in Emme's round print

Dear Morion and Sophie,
I was watching the shop today when Sao Kasai came by to drop off these adorable little dolls! She made one for each of the children. Despite the weather, I couldnt' wait to give them out! I wrapped up Sophie's Doll very carefully. Enjoy!

A woman wonders to your front door and leaves something on your doorstep. You open the door to see what it is and discover a black box wrapped with a red bow. You pick it up and bring it inside, a bit weary of what may lay inside... You open the box and see purple wrapping tissue paper, a sheet of crimson stationary laying ontop of it all.
note

Greetings!
I seem to have made something that might be to you and your child's liking. Do not worry, nothing will explode in your face or jump out and bite you. smile Hope you enjoy your present!
*PS: I made one for every child*

Sophie was beginning to really love presents.

Really really.

She carried both boxes in with the care of someone who was carrying precious, fragile treasures... until she reached the room where Morion was sitting and reading, that is. Then she could no longer contain her excitement. She danced over to him and plopped down on the floor next to his feet, eagerly beginning to open the first package.

"More presents?" Morion said, a smile quirking up one side of his mouth.

"It's like CHRISTMAS!!" Sophie squealed, causing Morion to wince and reflexively raise his hands to his ears. Dang, but that girl had a set of pipes on her.

When the boxes had been thoroughly dismantled, Sophie was squeezing two Sophie-dolls in her arms. She looked exceedingly happy.

"I thought you didn't like dolls," Morion said.

To which, Sophie stuck her tongue out at him. "I like these. They look like me!"

And Morion just knew he could sense another trip to the bazaar on the horizon. Sophie loved shopping for presents...

((Thank you so much Sao, they're adorable! ^___^))

A car pulled up to the driveway of the house, and put the car in park while Zanna hurried out of the car and placed a letter on the doorstop, and before she left, she set a clean rock down on the parchment so it wouldn't blow away. Inside the envelope is a purple piece of stationary with black cursive writing on it.

Letter
Dear Morion and Sophie,

Zanna and I, X (Zanna's gaurdian), would like to invite you and your child to an impromptu get together with us and as many other Simulacra and their gaurdians (or just gaurdians depending on the stage) as possible. Hopefully you will be able to make it. The party will be at my estate and you are welcome to drop by whenever you can, gifts are not needed, but I would ask you to bring some sort of food dish, since I cannot cook to save my life. It is this Friday and Saturday, from noon Friday to Saturday whenever. Call me with questions and RSVP ((PM)), directions are on the back.

Thanks and hope to see you,

X, Zanna, and the rest of the family.

Zanna hurried back to the car, they had many more places to go still!

((Hope it was okay to post this.))
