{Area Introduction}
[Durem]:
Welcome to Durem, the southwestern city of Gaia. Imposing buildings reach imperiously into the sky, the architecture a baffling mix of Greek, Gothic, Persian, and Baroque styles. And yet, despite the apparently miscellaneous arrangement, the city gives an orderly and clean-cut impression. The cobblestone streets are spotless and the roads easy to navigate. Each edifice emanates luxury and classic art, and even Moira's grungy garage is sparse and well-organized. Four immense buildings frame the city, and near its center rises an elegant clock tower.

The sunset of a cloudless day had just begun in Durem, casting its long rays through all the western windows. A sliver of this golden light found an opening around a set of blinds and traveled on to fall on a still wrist, the owner of said appendage staring down at his pencil in frustration.

Eidos exhaled and pushed himself up from his desk, not bothering to turn off his computer monitor or pack his papers away. "Small Victories" by Lowest of the Low blared from his speakers as he paced. Left, right, left, right... For some reason, he just couldn't concentrate, and it was starting to annoy him. He had work to do, damn it, and he normally had no problem focusing when he wanted to. Something just wouldn't let him be...

Eh, forget it. I'll go take a walk around town. He quickly turned and pulled his overshirt off the foot of his bed, then shrugged it on, fixed the collar, and headed downstairs. Just a half hour walk to clear his mind, and then he'd get back to work.

Eidos laid a hand on the front door's doorknob. "Mother? I'm going to go visit Tory, be back in an hour."

"Alright honey, have fun, and don't kill yourself!" his mom called cheerfully from the living room. Eidos nearly rolled his eyes.

"Don't worry, I won't." With a slight shake of his head he stepped outside his green-roofed house and glanced down the street. At this time of day, Tory would probably be home working (like he should be), and he didn't want to actually disturb her. He'd just wander around for a little bit.

Just incase his mother was watching, he headed purposefully down the street that led to her house until he turned the corner, then slowed his pace to an aimless ambling, letting his feet choose the path for him. It was a pretty enough sunset - brilliant, warm, and framed by the Arch - but he was a tad too busy trying to figure out what was bothering him to notice. It felt as if it should be obvious, and yet he couldn't quite grasp it... Eidos thoughtfully climbed up the steps of white marble and leaned again a stone column, brooding.

It was a desert sunset. Soft shades of orange, yellow, peach, indigo, and blue stained the sky like watercolors, and a cool breeze filtered through the city. Lights were beginning to turn on, dim pinpoints of white and red, and his shadow stretched into the coliseum.

Eidos was busy utilizing the counter as a strength training device.

He had braced his palms on top of the counter and his feet against the wall, and was steadily lifting and lowering his body. Once in a while his foot would slip, gravity being the tricky thing that it was, but he'd always catch himself and continue on. He was getting a few stares too, but it was of no consequence to him. Exercise, at least, kept him from thinking too much.

Even so, it wasn't too surprising when he was finally approached by a bystander. "Hey! What are you doing?" piped up a curious little girl.

Eidos glanced down at the kid and stopped, placing his feet back on the ground. "Nothing." She looked to be around nine, with dirty blond hair and gray-blue eyes. Her shirt was bright pink and the knees of her jeans were faded. Whether they were faded naturally or by dye, Eidos couldn't tell.

"Uh-huh..." She also didn't seem to believe him, but at least she wasn't pressing the issue. Instead, she crossed her arms, then peered to the left, uncrossed her arms, played with the fringe of her shirt, and kept glancing between him and the ground.

"Do you want something?" Eidos finally asked politely. The girl immediately nodded.

"Yeah! Can you help me find my football? Pleeeease?"

"Your...football?" He lifted an eyebrow. Maybe he was being stereotypical, but Eidos really couldn't see this little girl playing football.

"Uh-huh. It's my brother's," she explained. "Danny wanted to show off, so he took and threw it in the backyard, and then Mike said he could do better, and they went out to the pipe place and started throwing it at each other, only Danny messed up and he threw it too far and now we can't find it and my brother's going to be so mad-"

"Okay," Eidos interrupted, raising both hands in defeat. "Okay. I'll go look. Where is it again?"

The girl beamed. "It's at the pipe place! You know, that big tub of water with the weird fish in it? Here, I'll show you!" She skipped forward enviable energy and waited for him at the bottom of the steps. Eidos, half-reluctant and strangely half-eager, followed without protest.

She led him out to the Reclamation Facility and pointed along the north path. "There! They threw it that way!"

Wow, that's blinding. Eidos blinked and turned away from the pool, the sunlight sparkling dazzling white off its surface. "Alright. Stay here, I'll bring it back," he instructed. The last thing he needed was to lose a kid while searching for her brother's football.

She nodded. "OK, but I think it's behind the big twin pipes," she added helpfully.

"Got it." Eidos strode up the north path and easily climbed over the rust-dusted metal, keeping a sharp eye out for any stray objects. There were a few scraps of litter and a little graffiti scrawled over the pipes, but no- oh, never mind. There it was.

He stepped a little ways off the path and picked the ball up before taking a measured glance of the way he came. With quick flick of the wrist, he tossed the ball over the pipes and waited. He could hear it hit the ground with a muted 'thump'.

"That it?" he hollered.

"Thank you!" the little girl yelled gleefully. "I'm gonna go take it home right away before Wes finds out it's missing, bye!"

Eidos nodded to himself in satisfaction. "Bye!" He could hear her feet running off as he peered at his surroundings. For some reason, he didn't want to leave just yet...

Though he wasn't certain why, Eidos followed the path north into the forest.

...Entering from Outside the Crystal Temple...

The ninau slowed to a walk as they entered the city through the infamous gate - despite the recent collision with the Gambino Skyscraper, the city was still in relatively good shape with the exception of the Von Helson mansion but then again...Dune had very little care for the spoilt brats who had lived there and was rather glad to see when their home had been squashed.

Nevertheless, eventually the ninau came to a halt and glanced round expectantly towards the rogue who began to pat repeatedly against Roger's hands to get his attention and to point out that he could slide off the mount without any risk of getting hurt in the process.

Now where was it she needed to go to? - Ah yes, the underground...

((Tagged along with Dune...))

Roger nodded slowly, his hands prying themselves from Dune. And as he feared, it took only a breath after he let go of Dune, that he started to slide to his left, and fell off the horse, landing hard on his a**, bouncing once, and flopping down on the pavement of the Durem streets.

"Ow..." he muttered, feeling sore just about everywhere, not to mention the nice little bruises he imagined he'd be getting from the ride. The thought of those marks seemed to fill him with dread, as he scrambled up to his feet. "Um... thanks Dune..."

"You are welcome." The rogue replied as she leapt from the ninau, placed a kiss upon his muzzle and calmly gaveh im leave to cause havoc elsewhere. In his case, it was back where they had came, upon the empty plains where he could graze and be otherwise happy - Dune on the other hand had her domain here and as she swung wrong, her eyes lit up behind her mask and she gave a whoop of joy.

"If you need me, I shall be in the tavern at approximately three o'clock!" She chirped merrily as she marched down the street towards the clothing stores to aquire a more suitable garb, although she didn't head to the most famous stores - instead she began to take the backwater alleys as if she was heading to a custom tailor of her own choosing.

"um... okay... thanks..." Roger said as Dune walked off. He instead, stuck to the main streets, rather than the alleyways, knowing quite well enough just what sorta scum and villiany lurked there.

His stomach was rumbling loudly, and the man laughed a little to himself, as he had forgotten about lunch, with all the excitement and oddity of the day. Now that Dune was away, and the events far out of hand, that hunger struck back with a vengeance.

His hand reached into his pocket, frowning slightly, feeling the few coins in his possession. He almost didn't wish he had given up the coins he 'won' from Dune. He could use them now, after all, you can't eat pride and honor.

He walked slowly past the well to do section of Durem, restaurants and bars that would be far out of his meager means. Instead he started drifting into the run down, older, and poorer neighborhoods, looking for a place to eat.

Finally, at the end of his journey, he found an appropriate place, an open air stand, serving up simpl chicken and rice bowls. That was more than enough for Roger however, and before he knew it, he was sitting at the stand, his gold on the table, and ordering up the largest portion he could.

"Same as before, Regan." Dune ordered as she walked through the door and into the rather well lit shop when it's location was taken into consideration. The woman behind the counter simply gave a smile and leant forward upon it as if trying to see if Dune's figure had changed in the last few months but eventually she was satisfied that she hadn't and gave a slight nod.

"What colours?" She enquired calmly as she straightened again and Dune gave a light shrug. Regan then began to wonder whether or not the woman had even considered clothing colours before she had gotten here - why did she always do that?

"Alright, the blouse needs to be much thicker than before." She began as she pulled the mask from her face and gave a light sigh, "I want the main body to be white while the from the elbow to the shoulders the sleeve has to be emerald green - below that is white again." She folded her arms across her chest and observed the seamstress as she took note of the details that she was being given.

"And the leggings?" She persisted.

"Again, much thicker than before but the same emerald to match the upper part of the sleeves."

"Gloves." She asked again and then rolled her eyes at the rogue's smirk, evidently she wanted black for the gloves, "And I assume you'll be visiting Roan for the boots then." She observed and gave a smile as Dune gave a nod of confirmation.

"Ah, would it be possible to make me a coat as opposed to a cloak this time..."

"Too many people tearing it from around your neck?" Regan teased although she was well aware that the answer was right, a great many rogues came to her to be outfitted and they all had the same problem with their cloaks.

"Something like that, same colour as the leggings if you would." Dune mused and made her way back to the door where she paused and glanced round to fix the woman with a questioning gaze, "How long should I give you?"

"Come back in about four hours." Regan responded and with that, the rogue was gone again - making her way down the alleyways towards Roan's store; the man who was famed for making superb travelling shoes which she was in desperate need of.

Roger ate in calm silence, slowing down after going halfway through, and managing to savor the food. It was something he never really understood. The rich ate things that well, tasted like garbage, and were made of the garbage part of the food. Something simple, and cooked right, almost always tasted better.

And the best cooking, was almost always found in small, humble, back alley places like this.

He finished his food in silence, fetching his last coin, and leaving it as a tip for the cook behind the cart. With that he pushed away, and started walking down towards the alleyway. Where had Dune said to meet her? Now that he was full, more or less, his left ear started to itch, and with that itching, came an old, desperate question he longed to ask her...

"Ah, a beauty does enter my shop this day - to what do I owe the pleasure?" The man enquired teasingly as he set the boot down beside his work table and fixed his gaze upon the rogue who had entered his store, with her mask off no less.

"I require some new boots Roan." Dune responded as she leapt onto the rather out of place armchair and held up her foot to show the holes underneath, to which the man simply gave a grimace and shook his head - the woman was forever damaging her shoes and he made good shoes, what the hell did she do to them?!

"Colour?" He murmured with a wry smile, although he could anticipate the answer and was already making his way to the shelves to locate a suitable set of boots for her dainty feet - preferrably ones that didn't get holes in them as easily as the others.

"Black." She chirped and flashed a smile as he pulled a pair from the shelf and tossed them towards her with a brief flick of his wrist; she caught them and gave a slight nod of appreciation before pursing her lips, "How much?" She added.

"Just find me what I want and you can have them." Roan murmured, obviously referring to some business that the pair had and she gave a nod.

"Will do, I'll send what I get as soon as possible." She added and once again, she gave a bow and disappeared from the store, leaving a rather bemused Roan to stare after her - she never did stay around for long enough to have a decent conversation with!

That being said, she was soon on her way to the jewellers (which was more near the richer area of town) and would be easier to spot as she moved out of the alleyways and towards the centre o the city...

Unfortunately the man Roger, was searching the back alleys for Dune, and thus, completely missing her, as she ended up back into the well lighted, well to do sections of town. Instead he was poking his head into random taverns, looking for the unnamed one that the rogue could have possibly been refering to. It seemed an impossible task. There seemed to be more bars and taverns in this damned land then there were people! The burning sensation on his left ear, continued to grow, and thus Roger's search became more frantic.
PostPosted: Thu Jun 02, 2005 4:51 am

The rogue continued to whistle merrily as she came out of the jewellery store with her venecian mask fixed and a new hair clip for her hair - when she bought a new garb she really went all out and as she made her way back down the alleyways towards the Mage's Guild that very few knew about within the city, her whistling grew louder.

She was blissfully unaware that her new companion was attempting to find her or was in need of her presence at that moment in time and therefore she was more interested in searching for her entry token into the guild and preparing her money for the purchases she was about to make with the mages inside - these things were never cheap but thank goodness for agreements amongst guilds eh?

Finally, Roger just crashed, running out of steam, he leaned up against the front wall of one of a bazillion taverns in this city. He slid down, sitting slumped over. He could feel the burning in his mind, and knew that sooner or later, it would happen. Was the few little moments, and the dream, really worth it?

He shook his head, never able to figure that out. Nothing was really left to do but wait for him.
