3's battle system is the best so far, I think. It's fairly straightforward. You command attack, your character makes an attack. One attack, everytime. No various choices.
You can use a Technique attack, which varies per character. Favorites include Ziggy's Road Rage II (which inflicts AoE Break pwnage), KOS-MOS' Valkyrie (massive fire, massive break single target), Jr.'s Circus Spike III ("massive" AoE damage, but truly massive bump to your boost count), and Shion's Down Eagle II (heavy break damage, humans only).
You can use an Ether attack. 'Nuff said.
You can use a special attack, aka Overdrive. This is where my only complaint comes in. To use an overdrive (as that sounds more like what they really are, massively-punishing attacks), you have to have gathered up a certain boost count. No overdrives take any less than two boost to use. The complaint lies in the fact that your entire party draws from a SINGLE boost counter to use overdrives. It would be better if each character had an individual boost counter to use their own overdrives.
Moving on. You can use an item. 'Nuff said.
You can guard. 'Nuff said. You can switch party members, 'nuff said.
My personal favorite is the ES battles. Up to three attack choices you can use, and you can make anywhere between two and six attacks per turn, depending on your engine and what attack you use. ES get a certain amount of energy per round, and using attacks depletes a set amount of energy. So long as you have energy left, you can chain multiple attacks.
Anima overdrive system. This could not have been made more perfect. By the end of the game, your ES can acquire three separate overdrive levels, each with their own specific overdrive. Your overdrive meter is charged the same way the boost meter charges: deal damage. More damage won't always give you more anima. I've actually discovered that the low-accuracy, close-range attacks raise your anima meter better when you're going for level two or level three.
Overdrive mode lasts the one turn higher than the level you're using. Overdrive level one lasts for two rounds, etc. Unfortunately, you can use an overdrive only once per awakening (which is what entering overdrive mode is called). But the bonus comes in the turns following your use of the overdrive. Because until the overdrive mode runs out, your energy costs for attacks are reduced, so you can get in more hits.
And now for the ultimate part of ES battles: combo attacks. Each attack you use (minus overdrives) has a "Team" rating. The higher this rating, the more likely that at the end of a chain of attacks on your part, your next ally in line will charge in on your wake and wail on the enemy with their close-range attack. Under normal circumstances, this is called "Co-Op" and only one character will sneak-attack the enemy at the end of your chain.
This is part 2 of where overdrive mode becomes hella awesome. Not only do your energy costs go down, your chance of calling down a sneak-attack is almost 100%. When you score a sneak-attack in overdrive mode, BOTH of your allies rush in to deal damage. This is called "Ambush" and made me very, very giddy when it happened the first time. xd

Another fave. of mine is Ziggy's "Choke" -human only attack! You covered everything I would say. So, "Dito!" I LOVE THE BOOST SYSTEM! If the enemy boosts first, you can totally cut him off! He still has the next turn after yours, but still! It's so funI get so much humor out of it.

Xenosaga I: My favorite one so far. I just liked the way it went and stuff. I loved the little cut scenes that they had were REALLY cool. <3 Lunar Blade, and X Buster! OH and Spell Ray
Xenosaga II: Least favorite one, it was almost like the first one, but to me it was weak. The attacks did close to nothing! I mean X Buster was HORRID in this one! And so were the other stuff! I mean the double attacks little cut scenes rock! But OMG they did NOTHING! I used to wait for the right moment to do it, and it was like... I waited 8 mins to do this... and it did NOTHING! ES Battles SUCKED!
Xenosaga III: It was OK I REALLY miss the combo buttons that I and II had. It was good, but it was to typical RPG, I wish I could have changed the attacks though in the "Attack" thing. It would have been cool! ES Battles though GREAT in this one! REALLY IMPROVED for the best! I miss the cut scenes crying
