YAY cheese's first thread!
Anyway, I'm going to be posting some writing and brainstormign exercises ghere for anyone who wants to better their writing skills through practice. It's like an assignment you'd get in school, except it's open ended, and meant to inspire you, and challenge your abilities as a writer. PLEASE feel free to post your results or to post your own exercises here for others to use!

Short story Exercises:

1. Think back to a movie or book ending that you were dissapointed with. Rewrite the ending trying to keep the characters and situation consistent with the the original.

2.Open the dictionary up to a random page. True bibliomancers recommend closing your eyes, setting the book on its spine, and letting it fall open.
With your eyes still closed, point to a place on the page.
Open your eyes and write down that word on a piece of paper.
Then, write a short story based on the word you have written down.

3. (Here's one I think the whole guild should do together for fun!)
Multiple writers are needed for this one:
Write down one secret and fold the paper up(or pm it to someone).
Put all of the secrets in a hat, box, or other container(or mixed up by guild owner?).
Each person gets a new secret. (Draw again if you get your own.)
Use the secret you receive as a jumping-off point for your short story.
The next day, share both the short story and have others guess whose secret it was.

Poetry Exercises:

1. Write a poem that imitates the way someone speaks, using line lengths to make breath pauses, during a heightened emotional moment, such as an argument or a plea.

2. Write a poem that varies line length to create a rhythm that doesn't rely on being repeated line after line. In other words, develop the rhythm across a variety of lines.

3. Write a poem whose lines all end with full stops (caesuras).

4.Write a poem whose lines are all enjambed except for the final line.

NOTE: A caesura is a pause, usually caused by punctuation, although it can occur naturally when the formation of a sound that ends a word changes dramatically from the way the next sound is formed, thus causing the speaker to pause long enough to reshape the mouth in order to pronounce the next word. An enjambed line is one which has no stop at its end so that the speaker naturally goes on to the next line without pause.

Misc. Exercises:

1. Write in the persona of someone of the opposite sex.

2. Write in the persona of someone twenty years older than you.

3. Write in the persona of someone ten years younger than you.

4. Write in the persona of someone who is less well educated than you.

5. Write in the persona of someone who is more educated than you.

6. Write in the persona of someone who is blind or deaf or mute.

7. Write in the persona of someone who holds different religious or political or social opinions than you.

I really like the third writing one. Ah...how fun that would be in real life. Too bad I have never seen a Navy Brat write for fun. Nor have I actually seen more than ten Navy Brats. You'd think that, living in Navy Housing, I'd seen them all over the place, but this housing is emptier of people than Sean's Phyiscal Education report is of good comments. Now back on topic.

Oh...now I can't remember what I was going to say. Ya'lls' "randomness" is rubbing off on me.

I have a good way to brainstorm and get story idea's which I do this all the time, partly to get ideas, partly cuz if I don't then I'll be sorry....(indicating it's a chore I must do T crying T), but yes I believe it works very well and this idea is to wash dishes!!! It actually helps alot with idea's well it does for me I know it works for my mom too cuz she writes alot but not as much as me ;D

I'm having a big problem with this. How the hell do I write the thoughts in that persona? I start thinking in my very limited Sign! For the life of me, I can't figure out how to bring that coherently into written English.
