Well over the summer, I've moved from Washington State to Colorado. THe high school that i will be going to doesn't have a jazz band. This year would have been my 3 year playing jazz. Yesterday, i went to sign up for class when the counselor had noticed that on my transcript it said that I have been in a jazz band before. That's when she told me that the high school just started a jazz band for this year.

The problem is that, i 've only played my sax maybe 4 times this summer, plus the move from 500ft in elevation to over 7100ft has made play extremly differcult. So do any of you have any advice in how to boose my lung capacity in less than 2 1/2 days.

Perhaps play on a softer reed until it becomes easier. I'm sure your director will understand, and if he can get someone with jazz experience (especially because this is their first year), I'm sure he'll take it.

i agree with Helios. 3nodding i had a similar experience over the summer, because the atmosphere in Argentina was way different than here in CA, making it a lot harder to breathe. i practiced my normal routine, and when i came back to CA my lungs seemed way stronger and i could hold my breath longer and control it better. razz

Work on long tones ALOT. Start with 12 beats/note and slowly increase the length of each note. As well, go down half a reed strength for a while.

Good advice and what i would have said as well. Take it easy though dont overdue it. Longtones can be so boring but playing thast note out like that is very good for your chops and lung capacity.

I play clarinet and we're always doing competitions to see who has the largest lung capacity. My time goes up by at least a few seconds each time. MayB that's just a coincidence but its worth trying a couple of times.
