i know that different kanji can change a names meaning
does anyone know a good website or something which has kanji, and meanings to japanese names...?

What do you mean, a specific character meaning? I can randomly stick kanji to make the names, then tell you the meanings, is that okay? Or do you have kanji already, and would like to know what it means? (Or vice versa?)

宮 means "(shinto) shrine" or "prince/princess (imperial)" , to start with, and can be paired with 子 to get 宮子 or Miyako. (Is this what you'd like?)

Here's a few websites I just searched for that show some kanji. This one has the kanji compounds for some common names. Here are some more commone names. No kanji, but some meanings This one is in japanese and has the 100 most common baby names of 2005, there are the kanji and readings. "Akira" just uses one kanji, 明 which means light, clear, or 昭 which also means clear. Both of those kanji also can be read "Aki" so if you add it with the character for -to (usually 人) you'll get Akito 明人 昭人

my boyfriends name is aki(亜紀）
there are no set rules for japanese name, except that they must be within th 2,200 jinmeiyo kanji (which has only 287 kanji more than joyo kanji, these 287 are ONLy use at name)

I know a few different kanji used for Akira. However, if anyone finds errors, do point them out. I found these kanji on Anime News Network, and I think that viewers send in information about the actors listed, including the kanji for their names, so there is the possibility something is wrong.
彰 (dunno what it means)
哲 (but I think this one might actually be Satoru???)
明良 ("good light")
章 (my book says this means "chapter" but I don't know for certain)
晃 (dunno this meaning either)
顕 (ditto)
輝 (this one means radiant, can also be "hikaru" or the noun/verb "kagayaku/kagayaki")
明 (this one is the one I use, and Aiko-san already mentioned it)
So that's my little tidbit, but you had better check with Aiko to make sure they're legit... she'll know if I've given any faulty information.

I was wondering, do actors pick special names for themselves that might not me in thE Jinmeiyo kanji list in order to stand out? I know English celebrities have stage names that are sometimes odd (like the author, Lemony Snicket), so I suppose Japanese ones do too? biggrin
