-Prologue-
"I never wanted this."
The sentiment was nothing new yet it never failed to break Donovan's heart.
"I'm sorry," he whispered. "But there is nothing we can do about it."
He sat at a small dinner table covered in books and loose papers. Across the table his brother sat staring at a sheet of paper with notes scribbled across it in delicate handwriting. His white hair framed his eyes but Donovan didn't have to see them to know how they looked.
"Leo..."
"I'm sorry but I'm still not convinced," his brother argued.
Donovan stood, more out of frustration than any real desire to leave the room. The two had gone through this a number of times and it never ended well.
"Leo how many times do we have to have this conversation?" he asked. "There is no cure. You're a vampire, it's what you have been for over three hundred years and it is what you will be for the rest of eternity."
Instantly he regretted his tone but it was too late for apologies.
"This is not my fate," Leo stated firmly. "You may be able to resign yourself to lifetime after lifetime of drinking blood and whoring yourself out but I cannot. I'd rather be dead than what I am now."
"Don't say that!"
"Why not? Are you afraid one night you're going to wake up to find a pile of ash where your dear brother used to sleep?"
"Enough!"
"Are you afraid I will walk out into the daylight simply to get away from this torturous life that you seem to enjoy so much?"
"I said enough!" Donovan roared, sweeping his arm across the table and sending books and papers flying.
Leo sat unfazed by his brother's outburst. He simply watched as the dark haired vampire stormed towards him, eventually locking his gaze.
"All you ever think about is yourself. Have you ever once stopped to think that perhaps I would help you if I could? Have you even once considered how painful it is for me to know that my own twin brother despises his life so much that he contemplates suicide? Leo I know how unhappy you are and if there was a way to make you human again I would devote my every waking moment to find it but there is no such thing!"
Leo watched as Donovan dropped to his knees, tears forming in his eyes. The guilt was instantaneous.
"I'm sorry brother," he whispered.
He reached his arms out and pulled Donovan towards him. There was no more yelling, no fighting, Donovan simply rested his head on his brother's lap as tears slowly slid down his cheeks. It seemed like hours before either of them spoke.
"These notes of yours," Donovan said, picking his head up and gesturing to the papers strewn about the floor. "Do you honestly believe there is something in them that will lead you to a cure?"
Leo nodded.
"I do. I know you don't think such a thing is possible but I have spent three centuries researching and I know I'm getting close. I can feel it Donovan."
There was a conviction in Leo's voice, an unwavering certainty that Donovan hadn't recalled hearing since the two were human. In their seventeen years alive Leo had rarely been wrong and he never made irrational decisions. After a few moments of careful consideration Donovan smiled and shook his head.
"You are insane, you realize this?" he asked.
"How could anyone who has been forced to live with you for so long keep their sanity?" Leo replied with a smirk of his own.
"Is that any way to speak to the man who is going to help you find this damned cure of yours?"
Donovan's smile widened as a look of shock crossed his brother's face. It was unusual to see the normally composed vampire so silly looking.
"You believe me then?"
"Honestly I don't know. I do however believe that you will not let me rest until you have either been proved right or wrong so the sooner we can get that out of the way the sooner I can go back to my... what was it again? Whoring?"
Leo laughed, regaining a bit of his composure.
"I find it amazing that even when you are being kind you are so obstinate it's almost painful," he remarked.
"That's because you're my brother, and while I would give eternity to see you happy I don't have to be quiet while doing it."
