I don't know if there's been a thread about this yet but I've been contemplating taking birthcontrol for some time now and I was wondering if people could share their stories about experiences with birth control and maybe give me some brand suggestions to look into. I'm not doing it so much as for birth control but for actual menstrual reasons. I've heard that taking birth control can make cramps lessen, and after today, that's the only thing I'm really careing about xD I literally had the worst cramp I had experienced in years on my way to driving to my internship and I felt like I was going to pass out. So yeah, that's kind of high on my priority list to get done before I start my coming school year because I don't want to experience it again.

I take birthcontrol for period reasons and it works wonders. It keeps me regular and it does lesson my cramps. I doesn't stop them all together but it does help alot. I use Yasmin brand which is the one pill a day kind. 3nodding

I also, use Yasmin. It works very well. It's nice to know exactly when you're going to get your period, and it lessens my cramps as well. It has also kept me from getting pregnant thus far, so that's a plus.
I've also tried the patch. It's nice not to have to take a pill everyday, but in my opinion the cons definately out-weigh the pros. It itches, and caused me to get blisters around where I placed it. It slided around, and you get hair and fuzz and other disgusting things caught in it. Eventually I got a defective pack that wouldn't stay on, so I switched over to the pill, and I like it a lot more. Oh, also if you weigh over, I think, it's 190 lbs. the patch doesn't work as effectively, but it causes a slight weight gain (like all birth control) so I worried constantly about whether I was getting to heavy to use it.

I'm glad that birth control works for you all to help your cramps. For me it doesn't work. My cramps start the week before I bleed and stay with me until the last day I bleed. I feel like I'm going to pass out and throw up from the pain etc. So it doesn't work for everyone, but it's worth a try. I wish you the best of luck with it.

I use Evra, I was on Alesse but it gave me depression, and I had a stomach bug that caused vomiting, which, with an oral contraceptive, can ruin the cycle a bit. Since I AM on birth control for birth control, as we are no where established enough financially to have a child, that was a problem for me. Evra is a Patch. For me, it's freedom. My skin did get a bit irritated at first, but each week I put it in a diffrent place and now there's no irritation at all. I also find it will only 'slide' depending on where it's placed. 3nodding It's not for everyone, but it's wonderful for me.
I started taking 'The Pill' when I was younger, for the reasons you've listed, and yes, my cramps were lessened, it got me regular, and it even lightened the flow.
I had a cold not that long ago, during that particular week. While drinking lots of water for my cold, I discovered I had no cramps at all. Since then I make sure to drink lots of fluids, and havn't really had any cramps for months now. It's such a relief.

I take Necon, a generic form of Ortho-Novum. I love it. I started taking it for period reasons (cramps and breakouts during my period), not I use it as a forum of protection, along with condoms.
There are a lot of good brands out there, it just depends on what you're interested in using them for specifically. In your case, I'd say just about any brand that offers protection (*gasp* some don't!) would work out just fine smile

I take Trivora to regulate my period and I love it. I used to have terrible cramps and 12 day periods, which was generally not fun at all. xp I'm down to 7 days at least now, and no more cramps!!

I take Orthocept, and it does a good job. I take it to have regular cycles, so it does its job. I also noticed that after starting to take it, my acne cleared up a great deal. Also, my cramps are less painful and my periods only last about 5 days. Before the pills, they'd last about 12 days.
The only problem with pills is that I tend to forget to take them a lot.
The patch ortho-evra has a series of side effects linked to it now, including stroke and heart attack, so I was told by my doctor not to take it. Also, if you weigh over 120 pounds, it won't work for you.

I have taken BC since I was 14 years old (when I first got my period), because I bled for 3 months straight and got extremely weak and nauseas. I started with Ortho Tri-Cyclen which was WONDERFUL. 3 day periods, little to now cramps, breakouts decreased. They then changed it to Ortho Tri-Cyclen Low, and gave me the generic Tri-Nessa. That worked just like the regular Ortho Tri-Cyclen. I then decided to try the patch. I was on it for about 6 months. Not only did I end up with 'band-aid' rashes, but anytime that I had sex, it would fall off. I moved the patch around to various places, but it didn't really matter. It still worked as far as regulation, but it wasn't for me. So I went back to Tri-Nessa, or at least I was going to. They recalled Tri-Nessa because it had to much of one kind of hormone (I was never told what exactly, just that I was OK--still kind of scares me though..if it was OK for me, then why'd they recall it?), so they gave me Ortho Tri-Cyclen.
More of what I actually want to say though about BC is if you have not yet had your first child, PLEASE use BC that will allow you to have your period every 28 days! The whole purpose of our menstrual cycle is to get our uterus ready to hold a child. If we only have 4 periods a year, then what does that do to your uterus? I know that it is very tempting, but it is not as healthy as a period once a month. I cannot stress to everyone enough how important it is to have that terrible crimson tide come once a month! Once you have your first child, by all means, take what ever you choose. I just want everyone to have a healthy pregnancy when they choose to start their family. 3nodding

The patch ortho-evra has a series of side effects linked to it now, including stroke and heart attack, so I was told by my doctor not to take it. Also, if you weigh over 120 pounds, it won't work for you. I have always weighed over 120 pounds and the patch still worked for me..it is mostly just a statement saying that it is less likely to work the heavier you are. And all BC has about the same side effects, it even says so in the instructions. Companies have to put it there so that they don't get in trouble when something does happen. I have been seeing more and more commercials for this law practice about getting a settlement if you take Ortho Tri-Cyclen because of the potential side effects. I think it is BS because 1.) your doctor is supposed to tell you such things, 2.) the pharmacist is instructed to tell you such things (assuming you ask when they ask if you have any questions), 3.) The instructions say that many side effects may occur including death, 4.) The commercials talk about side effects. All drugs have the same side effect of possible death, that is a risk that you take when taking such things. No one is exactly alike, all medications will react differently to each person, some may even be allergic to a medication. It is up to the person who is deciding to take a medication to get all the information possible about the drug. You always have to be careful with everything that you take.
