It strikes me that this guild might be a great place to have, at least semi, official debates. Special topics which are reserved for a couple of members to debate with each other in a fairly structured format.
Basically my idea is that a thread can be started with two debators or teams of debatores and a moderator or two. Each side has a chance to post and rebut for as long as they desire, or a limited number of posts/responses. Moderators will make sure both sides follow agreed rules and other posts from people not participating will be summararily deleted.
So, do you think this would be a good idea? Would you like to see this as an option here?

Sounds like a great idea to me! I'd take part. It would just be awfully confusing if all these debates sort of ran from one thing to another on the same thread. A strict seperation a set of guidelines would be awesome!

Tanwen_Devilfire I think thats a good idea. I would still like to keep open debates/conversations as well. I agree completely. I didn't mean for this to be the only we people converse in here - I enjoy the freedom of a flowing debate. I thought it would also be good to have structured debates as well. Sometime you want to take the time to write out a good well researched response instead of answering off the cuff before three other people jump in and muddy the water or even change the topic. wink
It is so that people who want to debate formally, or have a private discussion which others can observe have a way to do it.

Sounds great...We can always amend the rules later if need be. Go ahead and start one up as a trial run whoever you want to use or take volunteers...if it works we'll do it regularly...probably on the weekends because that's the only days I'll have enough time.
And of course open conversations will stay...philosopher's had arguements in large groups and one-on-one even their master to apprentice debates were quite mind bogling.

You heard the man. Do I have any volunteers to work on a test debate run to see how well it works? I will also take sugestions for a topic if there is one people wish to discuss. I would prefer to try modering the first one to see how it works.

Sure I'm up for a debate... recently I've been wondering with TigerCatNails about souls and whether they exist... how's this for a question (it's actually a three parter): "Does consciousness imply a soul? For example, does artificially created consciousness, which is currently being developed, imply that a soul has also been created? Would robots also be able to puzzle over whether or not they have a soul in the same way we do?" For this debate I offer the following definition of a "soul": an eternal, undying spirit that dwells within you and passes from your body to new horizons when you die, and possesses your personality, character, tendencies, and basically your mind.Anyone have anything to add to that definition?

Sounds good to me, if TigerCatNails would like to post here or PM to confirm I will post the debate and we can start it running.
Also let me know who wishes to be affirmative or negative - or if you just ant an open sided/ended debate.

You don't need a lot of time, one post every day or two is fine as the debate waits on you...
