Peeking out of the den, a pup not too old looked about. Blue eyes, inherited from both of her parents, scanned the scrub and water for any signs of danger. There were none present, so little Ticdat climbed out. Tail waving behind her, she hurried away, skidding to a halt when her father called for her to be careful. The dusty brown and stone-gray pup looked back, ears perked. "Don't worry, Papa, I'll be careful!" And with that said, she was off to explore her kingdom.

Little nose leading her along, Ticdat soon found herself near another den. It smelled funny, that was for sure, and she'd never smelled such a thing before. Pawing at it, she started to dig to fit into it, wanting to know what lived in such a burrow. It would be the biggest mistake of her little life.

Stirring in her sleep within the burrow, Jini'kali's black nose twitched. Yawning, the silver and white ratel awoke the the scent of someone else at the burrow's entrance. Blinking awake, she bristled at the wild dog pup. It wasn't Jamaa, she knew his smell roughly because Topas came back with it on him sometimes. A growl rippled from her throat as she moved her three pups back further into the den, getting between them and the intruder. Nobody was messing her HER babies!

Surprised by the growl, Ticdat sniffed around. Something was in there, she could smell it! But what? Digging a bit more dirt out of the way, she moved further in. It was warm, she knew that, and there was more than one. But when another, more dangerous growl elicited, she wondered if what she was doing was wise. Never the less, she stretched a bit further in.

The pup wasn't leaving, and the mother badger was getting quite irritated with it. With a bit of a roar, she lashed forward, claws beared. Moving her stout body forward, she began to force the intruder out.

Mother was angry at something, but in his current state of blindness... The young ratel pup couldn't see what it was. He could only smell, and it didn't smell familiar. With a whine, he huddled back against his brother and sister, frightened by the angry sounds coming from his mother.

A loud yelp of pain escaped the tunnel as Ticdat's face was hit by a strong paw. Backing up as fast as she could, her eyes were repeated whacked by the angry mother badger. Stumbling out into the sunlight, she let out another loud yelp as her paw was caught in a strong jaw. Pain filled her world as the wild dog struggled to get away, blood streaming from her face and paw.

Pushing the wild dog pup further out of the den, the badger was soon covered with blood on her paws and muzzle. Someone invading her den, going after HER pups, did not sit well for her, and Ticdat had paid dearly. With a snort, she watched in satisfaction as the pup limped off as best she could, then turned and ducked back into the den. Her pups were safe, but they needed a new den now. She'd have to talk to Topas about that later.

Her world had gone from red to black, and Ticdat stumbled over everything as she limped towards safety. Her nose told her, though, that her direction was wrong, and she was soon wandering off towards impending danger. She knew this not, for she saw it not. All that drove her were pain and fear now, a lesson having been learned a hard and painful way.
