As I read more and more throughout the guild, and study my surroundings in the religious community, I see that many Christians leave their birth religion for Wicca. Now, I have come to ask myself: Why? What is it in Wicca that ex-Christians find so appealing? I, myself, used to be a Wiccan. And before that, you guessed it, Christian. I still can't explain why Wicca made sense, so I was hoping someone could explain it to me.

Oh, and so that I stand a slight chance against chaoticpuppet's threads, I'm going to add a discussion! Yay for thread envy!

1. Have you noticed this?
2. Has it happened to you?
3. What do you think the attraction is?
4. Why is chaoticpuppet so much better than me at making threads?

1. Yes and no. Most Christians I see either go to athiesm (sp?) or Wiccan. More towards athiest tendencies though.
2. Nope. I'm doubting my faith quite a bit but I'm looking at Judaism not Wiccan (No offense to Wiccans, I just don't really think I could believe in it personally).
3. Control? I don't know much about the Wiccan belief. But spells and stuff are a form of control, are they not? People like to be in control of their own life. Gives them a sense of security knowing that no one can have an effect on their life. That's why a lot of people fear Christianity so I'm gonna assume that's why people who were Christian go to Wicca (this is just an assumption, I know I can be wrong).
and 4. Because he knows what he's talking about and has studied his butt off.

1. Yes, though, I have also noticed that a lot of the "newer" Wiccans tend to be teens. So, another two questions you could ask are: Have you noticed that many of the newer Wiccans are teens?
If Yes, Do you think there is a correlation between the two?

2. Not really. Allow me to explain: I came from Traditional Roman Catholic, then I moved right into Satanism (the one that believes in satan), then I moved to atheistic Satanism; then finally to Wicca.

3. To the Wicca from christianity question: I think it has something to do with age: I have noticed that a lot of the "newer" pagans tend to also be teenagers; so I would say angst plays a part in breaking from christianity; Wicca looks so appealing because it is more free than christianity. Wicca also is a pagan religion, which involves witchcraft. Many teens like the idea of witchcraft. Why do people like witchcraft? They like the ability to control things; whether it be people, animals, or "energy." This "control/change" issue applies to teens especially because of the fact that they still live with their parents, despite their feeling that they are completely able to live on their own. This makes them feel slightly powerless. As for the change, this applies especially to teen girls; they are supposed to live up to this "hollywood" image, that has been drilled into their very minds by all outlets of what we, so affectionately, deem the media. When we look at reality for a second, we see that very few people actually live up to this hollywood image; what wicca does here, is say "Hey, look at me, I have a solution for you, just use a simple spell, and you can change your body."

Also, Wicca, as compared to christianity, has only one rule, whereas, (well, technically, christianity is supposed to have one rule as well, but, they have other side rules) has more rules, and they are stricter. The only real rule from wicca is the "do as ye whilt, harm ye none," found in the reed. Gardner set another 150-161 rules, but, they are pretty ineffectual, and were placed as such so that Gardner could keep control, as at the time, he was losing control of his new religion. Wicca is also gaining in popularity, you can walk into almost any bookstore, and find books on it; where as it's harder to find a book on, say, Celtic Druidism. Lastly, a lot of churches are now preaching against Wicca directly, and when you mix that with the rebellious stage, you get a disastererous effect (from the christian perspective). For example, Marilyn Manson went to a Catholic School, during one of the presentations/speakers/assemblies/lessons/masses, they said not to listen to Black Sabbath. It just so happened, that that was what encouraged Marilyn Manson to go home and listen to his parents Black Sabbath albums, and that put him on the path he is on today. Though, imagine if he never did listen to Black Sabbath o.O

4. Cause I'm a philosopher; that means my threads better be damned good. It also helps that I'm just simply that cool.

I also mean no offence to any Wiccans, but for me, after a while of being Wiccan, I found the belief to be somewhat, well to be blunt, stupid.

most translations ive seen(there probly are others) involve doing as little harm as you can in life. personaly, i like a good fight, and am enlisting when i turn 18, joining the green berets if i can manage. sound like i could survive peacefully?

and my freind sees it as you need to think about every action and consider the consequences before acting. again with green berets, sometimes i wont have a chance. almost never, really. i couldnt do it.

Green Beret, eh? The Navy Seals are so much better; that's what I am thinking of now, if college doesn't work out so well.
