Should we dress up when we go to church or dress casual? I like to dress up for special occasions and going to church is a special occasion for me. At the same time, I know God is not looking at our appearance, but at our hearts. So what do you think?

i think it is fine to come to church in whatever. i think it shows more repect if we wear nice chlothes, but then there is those people who can't afford nice chlothes and are scared to come to church because of what people would think of them. so i think as long as it is appropriate, come in whatevr, i have those days of jeans and a nice t-shirt smile

I think we should look fairly nice. I don't think we need to wear a tuxedo or anything. Casual is okay to me. It also matters what people can afford. If a poor person comes and looks kinda bad then that is fine because they are poor.

I always wear jeans and t-shirts and now I have some nice cargo khaki pants. And I wear either my palid(sp) or black converse. I can't afford good or even nice clothes...I afford jeans and shirts, so thats what I wear. And my church doesn't mind. I mean they have some who dress up like they would in the office and all the adults get dressed. But yea. I don't think it matters as long as you aren't dressing like a total bum.

I think you should dress well for church. Not necessarily a tux or suit. I don't think you should wear your everyday clothes. We dress up for weddings - so why not for God? There is such a thing as second hand stores and you can get nice clothes that are not going to break the bank. I think there is a problem for example when most teenage girls at church are dressed like Brittany Spears and their thong underwear is showing above their skirts or pants.
Matthew 22:11-13 (NIV)
11"But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes. 12'Friend,' he asked, 'how did you get in here without wedding clothes?' The man was speechless.
13"Then the king told the attendants, 'Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'

Okay, I agree with dressing appropiately as to not show private body parts or too much skin. I still think God is mainly looking at our hearts when we meet with Him at church.
1 Samuel 16:7 (NIV)
7 But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."
Matthew 23:27 (NIV)
27"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean.
You don't want to dress up for church to give yourself the appearance that you are better than others as well. We are all equal at the foot of the cross.

Jesus wore a seamless robe, which was a very costly garment (John 19: 23-24), so costly that the soldiers who were crucifying Him chose to gamble for it rather than to divide it between them, which was their usual custom. Even Jesus dressed well.

Even Jesus dressed well. Okay, well maybe that runs into the topic of what a pastor would wear? Jesus was recognized in the priestly order of Melchizedek and I think that the high priests in Jesus' day were wearing the seamless robes. Matthew 11:7-8 (NIV) 7As John's disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: "What did you go out into the desert to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 8If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings' palaces. John the Baptist was wearing clothes made of camel's hair. I don't think it was considered attractive in those days.

No, it's not about dressing up for appearance sake, but a dignity and respect when you are in God's house. And not only do we dress up for weddings, we also dress up for funerals. Would it be acceptable for someone to wear a thong bikini in church? I think some boundaries are important.

A thong bikini could cause some to fall into sin during a service. Please, don't anybody wear a thong bikini to church! eek gonk burning_eyes

I traditionally wear a shirt and jeans. Though, the Bible College I will be attending has a set dress code. Particularly during class time and with the attendance of churches [for which I will be travelling to various churches during weekend ministry].
When it was spoken of to be of one accord, 'twas no joke wink . Kidding of course, one accord was referring to the conformity of praise and worship.

Yeah, so this is what I think. I think that it is a good idea to dress nicely to respect God. But, it's not good to dress up just to look better than everybody else. I usually wear casual clothes to church, but lately...I've started to stop wearing shorts and jeans, and start wearing nicer shirts and pants that...aren't jeans. And it's not because everbody else does...cause nobody in my youth group dresses up a whole lot. And I didn't even feel like doing it at all, but I did it because I wanted to show respect to God. So I did it for Him. 3nodding
Yeah, so if you're going to dress up, make sure you're doing it for the right reason. 3nodding

Ok to the Samuel Chester the second hand store in my town sucks. All the stuff is out dated clothes and half the time I can't find anything in my size. I've tried to find clothes that I would wear and it was either ugly, out dated, worn out, stained, or not my size. And I don't go to church wearing binkie thongs or short short skirts...I hardly wear shorts because I don't like showing off my body, let alone a skirt. Thats why half the time I wear jeans and a t-shirt. I can cover myself pretty well with that and still look decent. I also don't wear make up. I don't believe in wasting my time to put on make up to make myself look "prettier" and to hear some guy comment on how nice I look today. I do wear make up too Homecoming and Prom but thats because I am on a date with a guy or going with my best guy friend and it's fun to dress up for those things. And I don't go to my school dances, I go to my churches alternatives for those. And homecoming and is normally a nice fancy dinner then some goofy game afterwards, then we go back to church and hang out. Then prom is a dinner cruise down in New Orleans. But even for things like that I can't afford. I get cheap dresses and my friends lend me their make up,shoes, and purses.
Point is. As long as you don't look like a bum, Slut (excuse the language) or a thug, I think you are ok. Because I can make myself look extremely decent in a pair of khakies and a nice t-shirt with an under shirt. And putting on my cross necklace and doing my hair and putting on body mist.

seriously, i haven't ever seen anyone come to church in those types of chlothes (bikinis, whatever). People do have common sense! for the people that do show up in something like that because they think it is cool to show skin, maybe they need some help from god to make right choices, so there sin shoulkdn't keep them from coming to god. i think it is wrong to show up in something like that, but what if that is the only thing they own? (very odd scenario, but hey) so i think that even jeans and a nice t-shirt is fine. we have goths come to church in ripped jeans, chains, and spiked hair, but they still love god, and still come! i think the important thing is just getting to church! god doesn't care, only people do...we set the image ourselves that wearing skimpy chlothes is wrong. in other countries, they don't wear anything, because no one ever said it was wrong, so in gods book, it might not even be wrong, because almost half the world might go to church without any chlothes at all! and adem and eve didn't wear chlothes untill they ate the fruit in the garden, god wouldn't have put them in the sin-free garden without clothes if he thought it was a sin wink
