There are many water spirits whose sole delight is the drowning and devouring of children. Probably most of these were invented by mothers to keep their children away from open river banks. The River Tees has one by the name of Peg Powler and a Yorkshire river is tenated by Jenny Greenteeth. Both are green hags with long flowing hair and sharp teeth who drag their victems down to watery graves.
