So, it was officially announced a few days ago that Johnny Depp is going to be playing Sweeney Todd in Tim Burton's new movie musical version of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (!) You can read more here and here.
So, what does everyone think about this? Do you think that he will make a good Sweeney? Or will it be a movie flop? Personally, I think that Johnny Depp will be a great Sweeney; he has the right, kind of dark humor about him and, apparently, he can sing (Sondheim approved of him ^^)! And if he's not as good, then Tim Burton's movie producing and design should be great. He always does great darker movies.
I know, of course, that Depp can't top Len Cariou or Angela Lansbury (who can?), but I do think that it should be pretty intersting.
Anyway! Thoughts? Rants? Sqwees all around? :'D Or just overall discussion about the original musical?

I've know about this for awhile.
While I think he will ACT the part very well, I can't see him singing it well at all. He's said that he is NOT a singer and as of right now, he will be doing all his own singing so I don't have the highest of hopes for the sound of the movie, but I think that performance wise he will do great and with Burton directing it's going to be visually amazing as well, but I'm afraid they are going to ruin the songs.

This news makes me sadder than anything ever.
gonk
I like Johnny Depp, and I like Tim Burton, but I love Sweeney, and I love Sondheim, and frankly, I don't think those two are up to the task of making this a good movie.
I hope, hope, hope I'm wrong.

I don't know, I like Depp and all, I mean, he's had some very good roles. But I keep getting a CatCF vibe whenever I hear this news, and I *really* don't like the way he did Wonka in that movie, so....I don't know. Personally, though, I just hope that Helena Bonham Carter isn't cast as Mrs. Lovett.

As of now, I'm praying every night that Johnny Depp doesn't pulls a Phantom of the Opera. And by that, I mean speak-singing. Gerard Butler made me want to remove my brain and scrub it clean of one of my favorite roles being butchered by someone who didn't even LOOK the part. I trust that he won't do that. On a lighter note, it's rumored that Jim Broadbent will be in the movie, who is the guy that played the Moulin Rouge owner. I like him, though I think that he was dubbed for Moulin Rouge, so it might not be going so well in the singing department. Of course, if were lucky, this could be like My Fair Lady, where Audrey Hepburn recorded all of the singing, but the producers decided last minute that it wasn't good enough, so they brought in Marni Nixon. So they can just find an awesome singer (Micheal Cerveris *kind of* sounds like Johnny Depp, right?) and dub the voice if it isn't up to par.

He's a smart man, but tends to focus on one aspect, leaving others to be less than satisfactory.

I don't want to make an expectation of this film before I see it, but the only thing I want to say is that I'm scared it's going to be another Phantom of the Opera....

Johnney Depp? Johnney. Depp. You're serious. There has to be a hidden camera around somewhere. Ashton Kutcher's going to jump out any moment saying that I'm punk'd. ... You're serious? You're really freaking serious? Can he even sing? That's kind of an important part of being in a musical...

I don't know why you guys are so worried
Johnny Depp has sung in a movie before (Crybaby), and it said in that one article that singing has been a big part of his life
I say we just wait and see and don't come to too swift a judgement

I read an article on MSN like....4 months or so ago with Johnny expressing some anxiety about all the opera, and he might get a voiceover. My speculation is that since it's Sondheim's music, Danny Elfman will be the singing voice of Sweeney, like he was for whoever played Jack in the Nightmare Before Christmas.
Just a theory.

Eh, i'll give the movie a chance before i say yay or nay on it.
personally, i think it was so FANTASTIC live on stage.
-cough-considering i literally had front row orchestra seats...-cough-
i think it's cool though. i want to see the older movie version of it.
nothing beats it live....ever. i'm just basically in love with the musical.
