(( OoC: I'd prefer male character for this, please. xp Setting is obviously a modern high school... I'd prefer if there wasn't any like... Magic or anything if that's cool. 3nodding Thanks. Uhm... Dunno what else to say really. :3 ))

Karina was 18 and lived next door to a cafe, not far from the local high school in which she was a senior, almost out of school. Karina started her day like every other, taking care of the necessities, and then starting towards CCHS; Cramer County High School. She stopped at the cafe quickly to grab a coffee, as well as a small cookie and headed to school. She ate the cookie within a few minutes, and was slowly sipping at her hot coffee on her way down the gray and dirty sidewalk.

Karina's hair was a darker chocolate brown, down to the middle of her upper arms when all the way down and straight. Right now, though, it was tied up in a messy bun behind her head so that it was out of the way. She was wearing a mint green camisole with a white zipper-up cardigan over it, and a pair of plain blue jeans that had a patch sown on it on her left knee. Her sneakers were a light blue and white. Her emerald eyes scanned the sidewalk, watching as she passed over small stones, as well as a bit of trash here and there.

Karina had just moved to the school this year to finish out her high school career, and possibly move on. No one knew much about her, and it seemed like no one really wanted to know. There were rumors flying around everywhere about her, but it seemed like no one wanted to know the truth about who she was. That was okay, though, considering it took a lot for Karina to admit to things; what it was she had done, and the secrets that she held inside. She didn't talk much in school, only when required, and did good in school; another reason for her classmates to hate her even more.

She turned a corner and looked up seeing as she had to cross the street to get to the school now. She always arrived a bit early, enough to get to her locker and walk slowly, lazily, to her first class. She sighed heavily, rubbing her hand over her eye as she started up the grassy green hill and to the front doors of the rather large school, with two stories of classrooms as well as a pool, tennis courts, a baseball field, and two soccer fields.

Bejamin didn't like his school. This was his second year there, but the only reason he wasn't back home tending the stables was because his rich uncle had taken coustody of him when his parents died. As Benjamin understood it, his uncle also helped financially with the farm, but the people who ran it were his older sister and an aunt on Benjamin's mother's side. He was going to turn eighteen in a month, at which point he could legally move back to his old house and live with his sister. But she was newly wed, and the few times he'd brought it up his uncle had made perverse jokes that made Benjamin uncomfortable. He didn't care to think about his sister having a sex life, and how him being there might disturb the couple. More importantly, Benjamin was afraid his uncle would stop funding the stables if Benjamin caused a quarrel between him and the rest of his family.

So he hated his life for the most part. He wasn't particularly fond of his school or his classmates. Most of them seemed immature, and the rest of them were too smart for him to talk to comfortably. Not that he was dumb, he just wasn't used to talking. He was used to working though and had a job at a small restaurant.

There was a girl he had seen around the restaurant, but now she was about to cross the street to the school. Today he was a little early. Sometimes he was a little late. He didn't care because he didn't like his first class, and as long as he had enough time to run there it was fine with him. But if he had time to walk slowly that was good too.

The girl had to wait for the traffic, so Benjamin caught up to her. He stood beside her, about three feet away, and tried to look like he wasn't looking at her. He recognized her, but he couldn't remember her name and that bothered him.

Karina looked around a bit and caught a glance of Benjamin from the corner of her eye. She stood up a bit straighter as he stood not too far from her. She pretended not to notice him, for the sole fact that she couldn't tell that he was looking at her. She took a deep breath in of the smell of flowers that wafted over from a yard close by; they were lilacs, similar to the smell of the perfume she was wearing at the time.

There was a light breeze outside which carried the light scent of the flowers, along with her perfume in the direction of Benjamin. The light breeze made the temperature outside a bit cooler, but it was a nice cool, not too cold. Karina loved days like this; the sun was out, there was a light breeze and you could smell the flowers. The dread of having to go to school, though, basically shot down any hopes she had of spending her day outside, just sitting and relaxing.

Inside her head she thought about the coming school day, but also about Benjamin who was standing but three feet from her. She remembered his name, even if he had no idea who she was, which, she wouldn't doubt that he did. Benjamin was in her second period class; Physics. They sat next to each other, closer to the back of the room, but weren't lab partners. She was partners with a girl who was the typical popularity queen; the type that gossiped about you in front of your face, like you a deaf person that couldn't read lips, either.

She sighed quietly. It seemed like an eternity before the light on the other side of the street turned green, indicating that they could walk across. In reality, it had been no more than three minutes, but she shook her head, pushing the reality aside. Reality was depressing to an extent, she thought. She glanced at Benjamin again quickly before starting to walk across the cross walk, still looking both ways down the street just in case.

Benjamin started walking when she did. The crosswalk never stayed green for long, so he huried across the street beside her. He also thought it was somewhat rude to pull ahead of her-- at least when they were the only two on the cross walk-- so he couldn't hurry as much as he liked.

"Hey, aren't you in my next class?" he asked the familiar girl as they reached the other side. He figured it was a safe guess since they went to the same school and she seemed more familiar than just the coffee shop.

She looked behind herself and him a minute and blinked a bit. She realized then, that she also recognized him from the coffee shop where he worked, which was right next to her house. "No..." she said quietly, stopping so that he could catch up to her.

"We... Have Physics together," she said quietly, nodding a bit. Her voice was soft, almost like a purr. She had a slight accent, but most couldn't tell because she tried to hide it. "Second period," she continued, nodding a bit. She gave him a soft smile, before starting to walk again, giving him time to walk beside her if he wanted to, even if it were an unconcious effort on either part.

Benjamin did keep up, his boots falling in step beside her. His voice was not soft but matter of fact, his words carefully chosen. "I remember now," he said to be polite. "I'm not good at that class. It's hard to pay attention. What about you?" She looked smart, he thought, smart enough to help him with the homework. And even if she wasn't, at least she was kind enough to talk to him. Most people made him feel like an outsider just because he had a southern drawl.

"Well... It's alright," she said, nodding a bit. "I don't mind it too much... It is a little hard to pay attention, though," she said, nodding a bit. If she were to really get into a conversation, or was not thinking about it, she would let her accent slip. But now, talking to him, she was very concious of it.

She thought a minute, looking around as they started up the walk and into the school. "... Benjamin, right?" she asked shyly, looking at him a minute. He looked like he didn't belong here, like this wasn't his place, this wasn't where he wanted to be. Then again, this wasn't where she really wanted to be, either, so it was more than understandable.

Benjamin flushed with embarrassment. "Yes-- but, I don't remember your name. I'm not good with names." Actually, he was good with names, but only if he'd really met the person and talked to them. Then he never forgot their name. "There are so many people in our classes, at this school," he apologized.

He thought she seemed nervous, but he also thought that might just be his imagination. "Benjamin Rike," he added. "What's your name?"

"Karina... Karina Espen," she said, nodding a bit. She gave him a bit of a smile, turning her head back to look as they entered through the front doors. She pulled on the metal handle, and the door swung open. Once inside the doorway, she held it open for him so that he could get through as well.

This was more or less the first time that anyone had ever talked to her, much less asked her name, and seemed at least some what interested in learning anything about her. Then again, she thought, he could just be being nice, or bored, having had no one else to talk to. She sighed a bit at the thought, shaking her head only a little.

It was a little strange to let a girl hold a door open for him, so he put his hand on it as he passed through. "I got it. Karina. What kind of a name is that?" he asked with well meaning interest. "I know Benjamin is Hebrew or something...and my last name is German. My father told me that but I forget what the names mean."

He saw immediately that the school was like a ghost town. Most of the students who were there already were just finishing very early classes or had come to retake a test or something. Most every one was busy but them. Maybe kids who had nothing to do didn't usually come to school early.

"Karina is Scandinavian..." she said, nodding a bit. "I don't think my parents picked it for that reason, though. Concidering I'm not Scandinavian," she said, smirking a little. She had hoped that she didn't make him uncomfortable by holding the door open for him, but it was just a polite gesture, something she did all the time. Or maybe she was used to people just expecting her to do it, and no one doing it in return; like she was a maid or butler.

"It means 'Dear Little One'," she said with a bit of a smirk again. Karina was not Scandinavian, in fact, she was almost fully one nationality. She wondered if Benjamin could guess, without her accent, which one she was.

Benjamin felt as if Karina was trying to play some sort of joke on him. Women were like that sometimes, wanting you to say something specific but not telling you what it was. He stuck his hands in his pockets, unsure of himself.

"Umn, are your parents from Finland? That's right next to..." He frowned. Wait, Finland was a scandinavian country too. "I mean, umn, Denmark? Or maybe your grandparents?" Now he was loosing the part of his guess that had been most correct-- she seemed foriegn to him, but he didn't know why. Maybe she was just from a city, and he was not. Maybe that was all.

Karina smiled, laughing a bit and walking down the hallway towards her locker. "No... Not quite. Try... Lower," she said, smirking a bit. She stopped at one of the red lockers and turned the dial. Right 4, Left 18, Right 32 she thought to herself, glancing up at him to see if he was thinking.

She waited a few minutes as he pondered still, and smiled, popping her locker open. "Mate, I guess it isn't that obvious, eh?" she said, smiling a bit. The truth was, she loved her accent, but a lot of people used to make fun of her for it, so she practiced saying things with out it. It was so much more comfortable, and less nerve racking for her to talk with it. She wondered if now he would get it, if he could understand where she was fun.

"England? No!" his face flushed with embarrassment and frustration. "Australia, New Zealand? I'm no good at guessing games. I'm running out of countries I can name, too," he said with some distress.

He hunched his shoulders and looked at the floor. "What does it matter any way? You're here now, aren't you? You're a citizen and all that." Most Americans assumed that if you were there, you were a citizen. Unless you were a Mexican, in which case you were obviously an illegal immigrant stealing all their jobs. Benjamin couldn't help being affected by these views a little bit when he didn't know any thing about the immigration and naturalization process.

"You got it, though! I'm from Australia," she said and smiled, letting her full-fledged accent out as she spoke. She smiled at him and his frustration, wondering if she was making him nervous or some such. She continued her smile and started taking books out of her locker, and bent down to remove her physics text book from the bottom, as well as her English note book. Her skin was lightly tanned, naturally so, and her hair was still up in a messy bun, which sent spikes of her hair every which way.

She looked around, putting her green canvas messenger bag and books down on the floor, using her hand to pull back her shirt over the part of the skin on her back that was now showing. "Good work, Mate," she commented quietly, smiling a bit.
